Thank you so much for supporting the students in my classroom! Your generous donations will help me build better, hands-on curriculum for my classroom. My students will now be able to see how scientists in real world situations work and thrive through the video programs you have provided them! It means so much to me that you all would take your own money to support education. Thank you again!”
Thank you all so very much for donating towards the sight word readers for our Book Nook! These books mean so much to us because these are readers at the levels needed to begin reading. Having a variety of fiction and nonfiction literature that contains sight words is so exciting for the students in class! They are able to learn to read by reading words recognizable to them but also with books that are interesting. These books bring joy to my heart by seeing my students in class pick them up and be able to read them. Children can get frustrated at times while learning to read due to the lack of literature available to them that is needed for their reading level. These books are exactly what we need for our Book Nook and I couldn't be more pleased with the selection. Than you once again for your generosity towards our classroom. The class and I appreciate you helping by bringing reading to life in our Book Nook!”
Thank you so much for the chess clocks. Our school has benefited greatly from having them. One of our students was able to practice using a chess clock before a state chess tournament. This enabled him to place 4th Place in the tournament in his bracket. By practicing proper clock management with a real chess clock, our students have become better chess players.
In the past, our school had only one chess clock to share among 60 students. It was not uncommon for a student to have to learn how to use a chess clock on-the-fly when they got to a tournament. Now they have the benefit of practicing with a clock before a tournament.
Chess has improved my students memory memory. The chess theory is complicated and many players memorize different opening variations. You will also learn to recognize various patterns and remember lengthy variations.
Chess has improved my student's concentration. During the game you are focused on only one main goal -- to checkmate and become the victor.
The largest impact overall has been improved test scores and grades from my students that I attribute to chess.”
Thank you so very much for your generosity to our classroom. Your donations allowed my students to get coloring supplies and highlighters to use in class, and allowed me to provide "loaner" pens and pencils to students who need them. My students were very excited to know that, even in science, we will use class time to be creative and colorful! Research has shown that when students are able to add color to their learning processes, retention of material is higher. In 7th grade, students learn very complex concepts: physics and motion, cell division and meiosis, heredity, and adaptations over time. Many of these involved processes and diagrams for students to memorize and apply. Being able to color code their notes has helped my students have fun while learning!”
Our new resources have changed the way we introduce algebra into our classroom. Before we received our wonderful supplies, we used make-shift items (beans, macaroni, etc.) to demonstrate the properties of solving equations. However, to have enough supplies of ONE type and that it can be used consistently changed how my students see algebra and solving equations. Specifically, my students can physically manipulate items that represent numerals and other items that represent variables. These items let these students discover the properties of solving equations without being TOLD the properties. Discovery is always a better learning medium.
When my students first saw the items, the thought it was some sort of game (some of the pieces look like pieces to a chess game). We didn't talk about how this related to math at first. We talked about how to keep the sides in balance. They discovered the properties of algebra through PLAYING. The first work with algebra was a positive one which gives those students a good first step into upper-level math.
Right now we are working on simple one-step equations, but the plan is to expand into two-step equations as soon as the comfort level is there. Once we learn the properties and can apply them with fidelity, we will expand these concepts to two- and three-step equations to get them prepared for the pre-algebra that will meet them next year. We also use these materials in RTI groups (small intervention groups for learners that need more one-on-one assistance). Using these materials allows me to present algebra in a non-threatening way and lets me work with a small group to meet their needs.”
Thank you so much for your generous donations toward the standing height table for my students. It is used to enable more movement while listening and working. It is also used to hold the many manipulative items that are necessary to enhance memory of complex Reading concepts, such as the sounds made by letter combinations. Tools for practicing Math concepts, such as place value and multiplication, are also readily available on the table.
When my students saw the table set up in the classroom they were thrilled, and each wanted to be the first to use it. Special students often need to stand to complete work to increase concentration and to allow fidgeting. They are able to use the tall table without needing to lean over in an awkward manner. The students have gained more freedom and we have materials more closely at hand.
Your donations have made a positive impact on my special students. We all appreciate your support.”
I can't thank you enough for the help with replacing our bulletin boards. After the flood in my room, our school was hit with a tornado. What bad luck! The items I received came after we moved buildings and were put into storage. We are just now being able to use them, and they have been such a wonderful help in decorating after moving back into our building. My side of the building has been redone and the side that was totally destroyed is now being rebuilt.
When the students saw the Christmas decorations they were overjoyed. We have a Title One school, and some of my students do not even have a Christmas tree at home. I can't wait to use the penguins for January and the hearts for Valentine's Day. The look on the students' faces is priceless. Thank you for helping make my room a happy place for children to come and learn.”
Thank you all so much for donating to this project. I know your personal children did not get to benefit from it, but the kids this year are loving it! We now have an area to store our reading buddies, listening center and books. It really helps to keep everything organized and in its place. We are using this organizational cart daily in our classroom. It stays in the reading center and houses the new reading buddies, our listening center iPod and our listening books. Thank you so much for helping to make my classroom a better place. I truly appreciate all of your support!”
Thank you so much for donating to our project! My students were so excited to see that they would have an iPad to use in the classroom! We have been using this resource daily for a variety of uses. Students are able to use the iPad to read digital copies of texts on their independent reading level. Not only are they able to read the text, they are able to take notes, highlight, and interact with the text in a way that paper does not allow them to. All of my students love when they get to read on the iPad!
We have also enjoyed using the endless variety of educational apps available. Students are able to use different apps to review and practice different skills that we have learned in class such as rounding numbers, multiplication facts, making change, and so many others! Students are so engaged in their learning with these game based apps. They are constantly asking to use the iPad... even at recess! We are looking forward to exploring new ways to use our new iPad in the classroom. It has made a huge difference in our learning!
My students and I are so grateful to have received this iPad through your generous donations. Thank you for supporting local schools and our wonderful students!”
We are so excited to be using these new sight word games and activities in our classroom. I like that these activities can be done independently, with partners, or a small group. We are also using some of our new things for tutoring and enrichment activities.
As soon as we opened the boxes, they were so excited to play! The "Zingo" game and the "Fishing For Sight Words" game are the crowd favorites so far. They see it as "playing", but I know the more they see and practice these important words, the more they become ingrained in their little minds! I love to provide fun and exciting activities for the kids to play and learn with. Your generosity and support brought those to my classroom! Thank you for helping me grow awesome readers!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Ledbetter
