I do my best to create an engaging classroom by integrating collaborative structures and take the pressure off of knowing and place it on learning. It's working, my students are engaged. They make me proud everyday. However, the students are still young and energized. This means that for 90 minutes I remind students to stop making unnecessary noises. The noises come from tapping ... tapping their feet, their fingers, their pencils. Tapping everywhere. I remind them to also stop tipping their chairs. In a recent reflection, my students reported being stressed. Math gives many students anxiety. In addition, many of my students come from economically disadvantaged homes and struggle with the effects of the stress that has on their home life. It's no wonder they can not contain their energy. I also don't want them to have to. While I have some squishy toys I do not have enough, but they work at reducing distracting energy releases. I also add stand up activities, but it's not enough. I want my students to be able to release their energy whenever they need to. It just needs to be a productive release. Kids are happy to trade tapping and tipping for something else, especially something they enjoy. So let's give them the trade and make math more enjoyable and more kid-friendly by adding some ways to release their anxiety, stress, and energy in a positive way. These wobble stools (20 in total) and Squishes will provide safe energy releases that the kids need and that will help everyone focus during the 90 minutes of math class. These stools will last in my class for years to come.
