Hurricane Matthew Relief

Let me begin by thanking you again for your heartfelt contribution. This has been without a doubt my most challenging year of teaching thus far. The devastation caused by Hurricane Matthew is still affecting my students on a daily basis. We are still displaced on a different campus and do not know when we will return to our school.

With that said, these materials have helped restore order and routine to our community of learning. My students enjoy being able to take the book bins back to their seats and read leisurely during their free time. They have also enjoyed having all of scissors, glue sticks, markers, crayons, and coloring pencils stored in our rolling tray cart that they can access as needed.

Thank you so much for sending us more supplies to make our room even more comfortable. My students love being able to read in a comfy place. The book boxes have helped us keep our updates classroom library neat and organized. The stand up desks have helped some of my students who like to move around complete their work in a more timely manner. The rolling whiteboard has allowed me to teach all over my room in an easy, convenient way. The additional wobble stools have allowed my students to stay focused when working in a smaller group. My students and I are using the projects for whole group lessons (read aloud) and for when they are doing learning centers. We use the color coded carpet to help reinforce their colors and to listen to stories. We use the puppets in dramatic play to use our imagination and play with our friends.

The students were happy to see the materials. They loved the rug especially, because it's large and bright. At first they were sitting on a dull black rug, so this rug definitely brightened up the classroom.

My next steps are to get them to write more. Sitting on the bean bag chairs and the colorful rug will definitely help them get more excited about writing. Also, by playing with the puppets and the other items in dramatic play, this will help their imagination get to going because they will be able to write stories about their puppet characters!”

There is no greater feeling than the feeling my students had when they opened up the box of new supplies. We instantly began using the supplies to make Holiday ornaments for their trees, they drew pictures to hang around the classroom, and painted. There are many ways that integrating technology into the classroom can help students learn at a rate that is comfortable to them and that allows them to retain information. Dear Donor,

We greatly appreciate your generosity. The technology was not a surprise to them. We have had iPads before. They were stolen when someone broke into our school while it was flooded. My students are 4 and 5 years old and they don't have the fine motor skills that it takes to use the mouse on a desktop, so we have Ipads so that they will have the same experiences as the other students.

Our curriculum is on the computer and they are on there for 15 to 30 minutes per day. The program focuses on literacy, language and mathematical skills. The program is an important part of their day.”

The dehumidifier changed the class to make it more healthy. It stopped the mold. The floor is not wet. The papers and the books are not wet. The classroom is better.

We learned how we can use the dehumidifier. We learned how the water gas turns to liquid. It was fun drawing the dehumidifier. There is something that makes cold and something that makes hot. The water goes into the bucket and then we are going to put it on the grass or trees.

Dear Donors,

My kindergarten students and I would like to thank everyone that played a part in making this experience a great one. As we opened our package on today, we were overwhelmed with joy. I could not get them opened and plugged fast enough for them. Luckily, with your help, our large classroom will have enough technology to help more students day to day. As soon as we got our technology together, the students and I began programs on Starfall. We plan to use multiple learning sites to be able to show the students multiple learning strategies.
