  • Sparking a Love of Reading after Hurricane Matthew!

    Funded Oct 19, 2016

Thank you so much for helping our students receive these materials. Many of our students were very excited to receive books that belonged to them and take them home to read at their leisure.

Students are able to choose from a variety of books and improve their reading abilities. Thank you so much for funding this program. This was a very generous donation to help my students be able to access quality materials to read in and out of the classroom.

My students who live in single-parent homes have discussed how they are grateful to have books that they like and are excited about reading.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Thomas

Your contribution and support truly made a difference. Because of the project my students have had a huge leap in confidence and success we are truly grateful. Each day that we are in the classroom the students are able to benefit from the materials. The materials will continue to make an impact on the students for many many years to come. So many of our lessons everyday are reflective of the materials that we have seen able to use thanks to your program . Thank you from my students and myself”

  • Educational Classroom Materials lost due to Hurricane Matthew!!!

    Funded Oct 22, 2016

On October 8th, our school was dismissed early due to Hurricane Matthew. When I left school that day, I was only expecting wind and rain from the storm to impact our area. As the weekend progressed, the flood waters began to rise. Little did I know, all the teaching materials I had collected over the past 15 years had been destroyed.

Our whole school district was out of school for three weeks and the school I had worked at my entire teaching career was flooded. Our central office relocated our school to a local junior high and we faced the challenge of starting over with nothing.

The first few weeks were very difficult. Our job was not to teach but to nurture our students and foster an atmosphere of hope. Many of my students not only lost their school but their homes and all of their belongings too.

Fast forward a few weeks. We received our Donor's Choose packages. It was like Christmas. I don't know who was more excited, my students or myself! They were amazed at the educational activities and games and BOOKS!!! They jumped right in to any lesson/game that I introduced.

I was so excited to receive the Leveled Books and Cart. My students are on different reading levels and I was faced with the task of trying to find reading materials on their individual levels to teach. Now, I could pull groups and work with them using our new leveled reading books. Students also used the books to read independently on their reading level. I am proud to say that 95% of my students made growth in their reading achievement this year because of your generous gift!

I am deeply grateful for all of the teaching materials you provided for my class. Unless you have been in this situation, you can not understand the impact of your gift. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. You truly have made a difference in my life and the lives of my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Gavaghan

  • Reading is the Root of all Good!

    Funded Oct 22, 2016

Our students love to read in small groups. I have two reading groups that are rotated Monday through Thursday. On level and low level. With my on level readers, we read as a whole group two times and then I let each child take turns reading by themselves. For my low level group, we go over parts of the book. Title, author, illustrator, title page and where to start reading.

The students love to look at the books once they are finished with their work. They especially like the non fiction books. They can relate well with the pictures and also with their lives. I had a few that could read independently which was great! They could "buddy" up with my non readers or struggling readers.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Walton

  • Reconstructing a Community of Readers After Hurricane Matthew

    Funded Oct 21, 2016

Once again, thank you for your donation to our classroom. All of our books were destroyed by Hurricane Matthew so your donation helped to bring literacy back into our community of learners. With these books, my students were exposed to different cultures and ideas. They were also introduced to different social students skills and topics such as geographic tools and different economical attributes of various regions within the United States. Additionally, these books and book bins provided my students with opportunities to read during their independent reading time. The other reading activities provided my students with differentiated instruction during our small group meeting. Thank you so much for making the remainder of our school year an enjoyable one after the devastation caused by Hurricane Matthew.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Jones

  • Learning and Thriving After Hurricane Matthew!

    Funded Oct 24, 2016

Let me begin by thanking you again for your heartfelt contribution. This has been without a doubt my most challenging year of teaching thus far. The devastation caused by Hurricane Matthew is still affecting my students on a daily basis. We are still displaced on a different campus and do not know when we will return to our school.

With that said, these materials have helped restore order and routine to our community of learning. My students enjoy being able to take the book bins back to their seats and read leisurely during their free time. They have also enjoyed having all of scissors, glue sticks, markers, crayons, and coloring pencils stored in our rolling tray cart that they can access as needed.

Once again, thank you and have a great summer!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Jones

  • In Order To Succeed, You Must Read!

    Funded Oct 27, 2016

My Kindergrtners enjoy any book I read rather big or small. They especially have enjoyed the selection of big books that were donated. The big books have been very beneficial in that the students can see them better while I am standing. I usually ask the students to look at the front cover and tell me what they see or if they know what the story could be about. We go over front and back of the book, author, illustrator and title page. I show them where to start when I read the first page and where to go after first page is read. With the big books, it is easier to see while I am teaching the parts of the book.

I read a story every day to my students. The book shelf that I order is great to display my big books. At the end of my stories, I ask my students to retell what they have learned about the story.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Walton

  • Continuing Our Love for Reading After Hurricane Matthew!

    Funded Oct 19, 2016

There are no words to describe how thankful I am for your generous donation to my classroom. Every classroom needs books and after Hurricane Matthew, ours were destroyed. When the books first arrived my students were so excited to open the box and explore the new books. Many of my students had favorites right away. We have used these books in many different ways since receiving them. We used them to go on text feature scavenger hunts (my students favorite!!!), to discuss non-fiction/fiction, carpet time, and for student reading. Thank you so much for keeping the love of reading in our classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Locklear
