Message from Executive Director Debi Gooding

We're very excited to join the DonorsChoose District Partnership Program because it opens up new opportunities for teachers to fund projects that will help them provide the kind of educational experiences our students need to be prepared to thrive in the 21st Century. By partnering with DonorsChoose, we can better support The Learning Choice Academy teachers who are creating lessons that increase students' excitement about coming to school every day.

About The Learning Choice Academy

The Learning Choice Academy (TLC) is a K-12 public charter school with locations in Chula Vista, La Mesa, and San Diego, CA. TLC was founded by a group of educators in 2004 in direct response to the needs of parents and students who were struggling within traditional schools. The goal was to create a school that was flexible and caring enough to empower all students to reach their full potential.

TLC serves a unique population of students, who have either not been successful in traditional schools (often because of issues such as anxiety, depression, and bullying), or whose parents want to be directly involved in their education. Since 2004, TLC has grown from serving 350 students to now serving almost 1,000. This includes 51% who are socioeconomically disadvantaged, 18% who have special needs, 12% who are English Language Learners, and 10% who are not in permanent housing.

TLC utilizes a hybrid-homeschool model, which incorporates both school and parent involvement in educating students. Families can choose between a 100% Homeschool Program or a Hybrid Program, which includes three days at school and two days of homeschooling. Every TLC student is set up to succeed through direct support from teachers and a personalized learning plan that meets their academic and personal needs.This prepares students for college, career, and beyond.

Through its personalized, flexible, and caring approach to education, TLC helps students who have not been successful in other environments. For instance, 96% of parents say their child’s progress has improved since enrolling at TLC. In addition, TLC has a 99% attendance rate, a 0% suspension rate, and a 90% graduation rate.
