  • Encouraging STEAM Careers in the Makerspace Lab

    Funded Feb 13, 2022

The Makerspace Club provided an exciting opportunity for students to explore STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) careers through hands-on projects using the Cricut machine. This cutting-edge tool allows students to design and create intricate patterns, models, and prototypes, helping them develop skills in digital design, engineering, and fabrication. By working with software like Cricut Design Space, students had the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of graphic design, precision cutting, and material science, which are essential in careers such as industrial design, architecture, and engineering. Additionally, they experimented with different materials, from vinyl to fabric and wood, gaining insight into material properties and production processes that are relevant in manufacturing and product development industries.

Beyond technical skills, the Cricut machine fosters creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork, all of which are crucial for STEAM careers. In the makerspace club, students collaborate on projects that mimic real-world applications, such as designing custom merchandise, creating 3D models, or crafting interactive art pieces. These experiences help them understand how STEAM disciplines intersect in fields like robotics, fashion technology, and digital fabrication. Moreover, by engaging in project-based learning, students develop entrepreneurial and critical thinking skills, preparing them for future careers in innovation-driven industries. The Cricut machine not only makes STEAM learning more engaging but also empowers students to see themselves as future designers, engineers, and creators. Thank you again for funding this special project and giving my students this experience.”

Many thanks for your generosity. My students and I will be able to create so many artifacts with the items from this grant. The Makerspace program will be able to meet several goals that were set at the beginning of the year. I’m excited and so are my students!”

    With gratitude,

  • Cricut T-Shirts for the #JAMakerspace Club

    Funded May 10, 2023

Many thanks for your generous donation for the JA Makerspace program. My students learned how to sublimate vinyl heat press shirts for the Makerspace club. My students had a variety of reactions to this experience. Many of the students enjoyed creating and designing the logo for the t-shirts. A small number of students enjoyed cutting and weeding the vinyl which happens to be the most tedious of the process. The remainder of the students enjoyed actually heat pressing the vinyl to a color shirt of their choice.

Overall, this was a great experience for the students. They got the opportunity to be in the drivers seat of this project from beginning to end. Your donation made it possible for my students to create something that they are proud of. Again, thank you and I hope you enjoy the images.”

  • Makey Makey With Perler Beads

    Funded Jan 13, 2023

Thank you so much for your donation! The students were so proud to create so many Perler designs for their first Makerspace fair. Students created keychains, magnets, coasters, signs and earrings that were sold to students, teachers, staff and parents.

The students were so proud of their creations. During the days that the Makerspace Fair was open they actively participated in selling their products by interacting and explaining each item for sale and the different price points.

Though we have some items that didn't sell, the students were not discouraged. They were so proud of the work they have done and cannot wait to sell the overstock products at the next fair.

Again, many thanks for your donation and providing my students with a memorable experience they will never forget.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. K.C. Boyd

  • Realistic Fiction Reading During Spring Break

    Funded Jan 8, 2023

This project was designed to focus on students reading print books with themes of realistic fiction and protagonists of color. The students were so excited about these books, some have started reading some of them already. :-)

As a result of reading all of these books, the students will expand their understanding of today's challenges and issues, help reading comprehension and vocabulary. Moreover, by engaging in independent reading students will have a calming and relaxing activity to partake in.

Some of the books received will be given to the students to keep for their personal libraries in their homes. Students will apply what they have acquired from these books during class, school assembly discussions, cultural holiday celebrations and many other events in their lives.”
