  • Creating Hooks to Explore the World of Expository Text

    Funded Nov 6, 2012

Thank you for your contribution to the telescope that we now have in our classroom. My students were excited to see the telescope and decided to find out if it was reflective or refracting. They used information we had read on different types of telescopes and decided that it must be a refracting telescope. Students also compared our telescope to the Zeiss telescope they saw at the Griffith Observatory.

We are in the process of observing the skies for planets etc using information that we obtain from astronomy websites.

Without donors like yourselves, classrooms will find it difficult to engage students to phenomena in the world around us.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Gregory-Obiamiwe

  • Bringing Technology to the Classroom

    Funded Dec 14, 2012

I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to each and every one of you who contributed to my project "Bringing Technology To The Classroom". Your generosity has made it possible for me to bring the world of science to my high school biology students. I am now able to provide interactive Power Point presentations, video, and sound to our classroom.

The people who have been most impacted by your generosity are the students. They have been able to use the technology to enhance their understanding of the material and to construct their own presentations for the class. I believe that every student deserves a quality education, and your gift has brought my classroom one step closer. Thank you, again for your commitment to education.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Driscoll

  • Creeping Kindergarten Contagion!

    Funded Dec 17, 2012

Thank you for supporting this project. The materials requested in this project are being used on a daily basis. When I requested the Boo Boo Buddies, I thought they would be a good thing to have for the occasional bump. They have become a huge source of comfort for any type of wound old or new. The children get them out of the refrigerator many times in a day. They are better than band-aids for making everything seem better.

The construction set is awesome. The children have figured out the best way to build a form that a child can be inside of, is to build around a standing child. It is amusing to watch, the children are working cooperatively, and their imaginations are fully engaged. We are using the big scoops in our bean bins. The children love the texture of the beans. They would do this activity every day if they could. They use the scoops to pour the beans into measuring cups, or just over their hands. It is a great tactile experience. The balancing monkeys has also become another favorite math time activity. The children are learning number sense as well as balance and weight. When I first showed the children the color mixing pitchers, you would have thought I was Houdini! They all clapped and cheered loudly with amazement.

Thank you for helping me to provide my students with materials that we would otherwise not have access to in our classroom. Thank you for investing in their education and for supporting public education.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Morrell

  • Help Me Overcome The Deep Freeze

    Funded Dec 18, 2012

Thank you so much for supporting my students and my classroom. The addition of this external hard drive will allow students a place to securely store their projects and turn in their work electronically. This will help prepare them for the 21st century. It will also allow us to become more green by using less paper.

This will help us even more next semester when my classroom is scheduled to get outfitted with new computers for student use. Next semester, there should be one computer per student. This will allow for even more projects to be computer based requiring a place for students to securely save their work.

Once again your support is very much appreciated.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Tutterow

  • Projecting Students into the Future

    Funded Dec 18, 2012

Thank you so much for your donation of the projector and projector bulbs to my classroom and school. This gift is a vital piece to my teaching and my students' learning. There is not a day that I do not use the projector to either present notes, show videos, explain diagrams, show examples, give directions, demonstrate lab techniques, work out classwork and homework problems, play review games, or share resources.

My students know from the moment they walk into the room to look on the projector for their warm-up. After the warm-up, we go straight into the lesson, where the projector continues to be the focal point. Thus, this projector not only helps me with delivery, it also helps me with my organization and management of my room. My students have a place to concentrate their attention and I have a way of knowing any student who may be lost or confused.

In addition to the benefits in my classroom, the bulbs that were donated reached even more kids outside of my room as they went to other teachers who needed a new bulb to illuminate their rooms. In the current state of events in my school district, most educators don't know where the next ream of paper will come from, let alone when the next projector replacement bulb (which is really expensive and often deemed a non-essential according to school budgets) will be replaced.

Thank you so much for your care, concern, and donation. As my colleagues and I continue to fight for better resources and conditions for students, it is comforting to know that there are generous donors and informed citizens who are willing to support the fight for quality public education!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Wang

  • It's Electric!!!!!!!

    Funded Dec 15, 2012

Thank you so much for funding our "It's Electric!!!" project to buy electroscopes for our class. Last year we watched a video on using electroscopes and this year we actually did experiments using electroscopes to show the effect of static electricity. What a huge difference it made to the learning and fun in my classroom. The students loved using them and scored much better on their static electricity quizzes.

You have made a huge difference to my students' education by helping me to bring hands-on learning into my classroom. Thank you so much for the support.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Murray

  • Technology In The Classroom

    Funded Dec 26, 2012

My project has been funded, and my students and I are all tremendously excited! With your support, we will be able to turn my class into a more engaging place, where the students will be able to get their hands on some of the more interesting labs, instead of them being done as a teacher demonstration. I am confident that this will increase interest, and thus understanding.

This funding has come right on time. Looking ahead at my lessons for the coming months, I will be able to use all of these materials in an exciting and appropriate way to fuel student learning and achievement. One more time, thanks so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Clarke

  • Magnifying Science Through Microscopes

    Funded Nov 7, 2012

Thank you for giving the students at South City Prep the resources to further their studies in science. The students have been able to use the microscopes to deepen their understanding of the scientific method. The processes involved in setting up the procedures for an experiment have allowed students to learn the steps in using the microscopes.

Having more hands-on activities in class for the students has helped change their perception of science class. The students are excited to have this equipment that has allowed them to participate in "cool" science activities. Thank you for making this a possibility for our students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Keeter

  • First Graders In The Quest To Explore Math And Science

    Funded Dec 15, 2012

We are especially thankful for your generous donations and support to our classroom in the purchase of these wonderful science and math collections. My students and I appreciate your generosity more than words can say. With the materials you have donated, my students are exploring not only science, but also math and language arts. They are reading about the animals they love and practice many skills. They are discovering many treasures hidden in their own backyards.

Curiosity is what motivates my first graders to explore science through reading and makes their learning more enjoyable. This school year we were fortunate to have a mini zoo coming to our school. I wish you had seen the faces of my first graders as they were interacting with the animals. As a result, my students are enjoying more the science books as they can learn on their own about the animals they love. With the books you have donated, now we have visits to the zoo without leaving our classroom. Sometimes they have the chance to take a virtual trip to San Diego Zoo to visit the pandas, the elephants and koalas or they can check out Mars with the help of the Curiosity.

The book collections we received are at their own level so they are gaining confidence as they develop their literacy skills and they also find the topics engaging. They are also working on their social skills as they sometimes discuss topics in these books. The math books are also a great addition to our program since they provide extra practice.

Thank you Chevron for your generous 50% donation to our project and especially for selecting our project among so many deserving projects. Thanks also to Horace Mann Companies and to The Donorschoose.org Board of Directors for extending the generosity of our donors with their matching donations.

Thanks again to all of you for helping my "First Graders in their Quest to Explore Math and Science."”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Nino

  • Understanding Engineering Through Legos!

    Funded Dec 14, 2012

Thank you for donating LEGOS to my classroom! We have had so much FUN learning and it feels like we are only getting started. Not only have we integrated LEGOS into our math and science units, many students also decided to make 3-D models of settings of stories from books they had read.

In addition to classroom lessons, I was also able to teach an after school enrichment class through our SUN School program. We used the LEGOS for challenges, such as building the tallest free standing structure.

Without your support, we would not have access to such fun and useful materials.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Deacon
