It is with mixed emotions that I am participating in Mustaches for Kids. That's right, for the next four weeks, I will be subjecting myself to public humiliation and private doubt by growing what will no-doubt be a ridiculous looking mustache. In order to justify this endeavor I need your support. Please sponsor my Mustache by picking a classroom project from the list below to support. And wish me and my mustache luck. • Great Literature for AP Students (Part 2)

    Funded Dec 14, 2010

Thank you so much for your help in getting these books into my students' hands! I am always excited to connect thoughtful students with thought-provoking literature, and I knew that this text would be an excellent fit for my analytical, science-oriented juniors.

As it turned out, I didn't even have to assign the book. In the days before the AP exam, we read a selection from a Neil Postman essay contrasting the view of the future set forth in 1984 with that of Brave New World. After much discussion, the students sat down to write their essays. As they turned them in, student after student asked, did I have a copy or two of this book that I could loan out? Perhaps that very day? And that is how my entire class came to read the same novel without my even asking.

I look forward to the discussions we will have about this novel in the days to come, and to reading the arguments students develop. Again, thank you for making this authentic learning experience possible. ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lucas

  • Fast Food Nation

    Funded Nov 23, 2010

Thank you all so much for your generous donations. My students have been enlightened to the creation, expansion, and domination of the fast food industry in our culture today. The students in my class live in an area densely populated with fast food of every kind, except healthy options.

As a class, we had already discussed a unit on Who's to Blame for our national obesity problem. We explored marketing, business leaders, parents, and eaters. Rich discussion followed these ideas, but Freading Fast Food Nation has added a depth to their understanding.

With their new found knowledge of the industry and its effects, these students should be able to make more informed decisions about their food choices.

Thank you again for providing an opportunity for urban youth to gain a little perspective on their food choices.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Goehring

  • Fight Prejudice!

    Funded Dec 21, 2010

Thank you so much for your generous contribution! Forty students from my remedial English class visited the Museum of Tolerance last February and were visibly moved by the experience. We followed our guide and experienced how racism, discrimination, and hate affect children around the world. Many of my students were shocked when they saw videos of modern-day child labor, malnutrition, and disease. They also witnessed evidence of hate crimes through media presentations. Then we entered the Holocaust exhibit, where everyone was introduced to one child who lived during the Holocaust. Each student received an ID card with the child's name and biographical information. The guide then changed her demeanor and began chastising my students, and yelling at them to line up! She led us through the concentration camps and showed photos of the gas chambers and sleeping quarters. We heard the voices of people who experienced the horror of these camps. At the end of the tour, we inserted the ID cards we had received and discovered the fate of the children we had learned about. Some had survived; some not.

My students especially appreciated the opportunity to meet a Holocaust survivor at the end. Although he must have been in his seventies or eighties, this man was lively and strong. He recounted in detail his ordeal as a young boy in Poland, being separated from his mother, and later from his father. He had survived by lying about his age and getting "selected" to work in the labor camps. He inspired us all to work hard to create a more tolerant world.

We all really appreciated this thought-provoking opportunity.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lee

  • We Can't Read Without Books!

    Funded Dec 16, 2010

I just wanted to thank you all for your generous donations. To Kill a Mockingbird is a classic novel and probably my favorite book to teach. In twenty years, I have never had a student tell me he didn't like the story. Reading is such an important skill. Reading a good book helps kids enjoy the process and actually helps them learn to like reading.

Our current copies of the novel are torn and falling apart. This year I will be proud to hand out new copies of this great book to our students. I think when the books are in good condition it helps send the message to students that books are important and need to be treated with respect.

Thanks again for supporting public education through your donation.”

  • Publish Poetry, Please

    Funded Dec 28, 2010

Thank you so much for your generous donation to Please Publish Poetry. The AP Spanish Language students will be very excited to see their own poetry and short stories "published". We will be writing a poem in the style of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda Ode to an Onion and a short story modeled after Isabel Allende's "Cartas de amor traicionado" ("Letters of Betrayed Love").

Thank you once more on behalf of the AP Spanish Language students.”

  • Students with Autism Need Interactive Technology

    Funded Nov 19, 2010

Thank you so much for supporting our project Students with Autism Need Interactive Technology. The projector and Mimio system have arrived and we have had many successful language lessons. The equipment is easy to use. It is small and portable making it easy for me to bring it from room to room. My students are engaged during the lessons and eagerly wait for their turn at the board. Once they get to the board they have great success learning and reinforcing language concepts. They love to use the "magic pen" to manipulate objects on the board.

Thank you for supporting us with interactive technology that will continue to offer language learning opportunities to my students. The crucial skills that will be acquired with the technology will directly impact the success of my students this year and will build important communication skills that will last a lifetime. I appreciate your generosity and support. I know that there are many worthy projects on DonorsChoose and am honored that you chose to support this one. You have made a difference in the lives of many students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Luckart

  • Examining the 1940's Through the Eyes of Zoot Suiters

    Funded Nov 26, 2010

I am truly thankful for your gift which will allow my students to read the play Zoot Suit by Luis Valdez. Because of your generosity, students will have the opportunity to read engaging literature that deals with issues that are similar to those my students confront today.

Purchasing Zoot Suit will allow my students and the students of my colleagues to read a fine play by a great Latino playwright. In addition to studying character development, plot, and theme, we will also look at Valdez's use of language as he moves back and forth between English and Spanish.

I am sure this year's students will be as excited to read the play as my students were last year, only this year we will not have two or three students sharing a book.

Thank you again for your kindness.

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Carter
