  • One Computer, Endless Possibilities!

    Funded Sep 27, 2013

The addition of the touch screen computer to our classroom has been a great joy! The children are excited to use the computer day after day. They are enjoying it months later with as much enthusiasm as the first time they used the computer. The computer is so much faster than all of the other computers in our school because it is new and updated. The students enjoy being able to complete tasks quickly and efficiently on the computer. So far we have used the computer for math and literacy educational games as well as for several research activities. The computer has brought additional happiness to our classroom and we are all so grateful for your generosity and support of urban public education. Thank you!”

  • Raptor Robotics Club

    Funded Oct 22, 2013

It is with gratitude that I say thanks for supporting my classroom. This year my science classroom is implementing a STEM day once a week. This is a day in which students choose a personal project in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. With this new materials, I have been able to give my students a classroom experience like no other.

Students are building amazing structures and contraptions using the engineering sets. Using the K'nex and Contraptions systems the students are understanding the basics of robotics, problem solving, teamwork and engineering.

Thanks to your support I have almost 140 students who have discovered a new motivation, having learning while having fun! They are very grateful to be able to have these materials provided.”

    With gratitude,

  • Evolving Gameplay With MakeyMakey Kits: Kids Play THEIR Way!

    Funded Sep 30, 2013

Albert Einstein was given credit for positing "it is a miracle that curiosity survives formal education." Through your generosity and advocacy in STEM education, quite the opposite is true. On behalf of myself and the 85 students under my tutelage, please accept heartfelt thanks for the opportunity to discover, play, and be curious- things often neglected in the school setting.

Since my students were invested in the process of gaining grant support for our Makey Makey kits, dutifully informing their parents of the opportunity, voting daily for the project via the Limeades for Learning program, and spreading the word at our school, the news that you were able to help us with our goal was met with daily excitement, leading to raucous applause when it was announced that the project was fully funded. Thank you for bringing excitement to my students!

Currently, students in my first block class are experimenting with the Makey Makey kits to discover games and interactive applications that fit with its functions. For example, some groups are focusing on musical applications, using conductive substances as "keys," while others are researching games for which a unique control device can be created. Later, this class will train my other classes in the appropriate use of Makey Makey, thereby creating more STEM FUN engineers!

In the long view of STEM learning, it is my hope that this experience, combined with other gameplay opportunities and game creation, will result in a measurable increase in problem-solving acuity. Sadly, the practice of problem solving is not contained in a specific academic standards; however, if it is not taught, the skill withers, much like a unattended rose. I will continue to challenge my students, with unique problem situations, in the hope I am strengthening them. Your help in this is noted, appreciated, and valued by not only teachers like me, but by students who will grow to succeed like we have.

    Thanks!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. K.

  • Robots Class Needs a Robot

    Funded Oct 1, 2013

My students are SO excited about the new Robot! They are very excited about all the new features available for them to explore and learn to use.

The new robot has many new features that the old Mindstorm robots didn't have. This gives us a head start on next year's season.

That you so much for supporting the team. It means a lot to both myself and my students that people outside the school community support our efforts.

Please continue supporting our school and others like ours. It means a lot both to the teacher and to the students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. W.

  • Geocaching With Handheld GPS Devices

    Funded Oct 4, 2013

The students have been having fun and learning through trial and error with the GPS devices. The devices take some practice in using to find their way around. They have had to learn how to cooperate with one another to reach the goal of finding the Waypoints set up in the GPSr devices. So far, we have been using the devices to find the waypoints and then make quantitative and qualitative observations -- important skills for the Scientific Method of inquiry. Soon we will be using the devices to find specific "treasures" which are boxes with activities to perform. Finally, the students will create their own treasure hunts so that they can share them with their fellow classmates to find.

Thank you so much for making this fun and exciting mission possible.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rosales
