  • Geology Rocks! City Kids Take Science Outside!

    Funded Oct 10, 2009

Thank you so much for your donations of clipboards, tree finder books, triple beam balances, and graduated cylinders! My science scholars were thrilled when they received these supplies. We use the clipboards daily in class to keep track of our data for experiments. We have also used the graduated cylinders and triple beam balances to learn more about density. We are excited for the warm weather to come so that we can venture outside to use our tree finder books!

Without your generous donations, my science scholars would not be able to have the hands-on learning experiences that make science special. We are truly grateful for your generosity!”

  • You Can Make a Massive Impact!!

    Funded Oct 19, 2009

Thank you so much for donating to my classroom. My students were so excited to get to use tools such as these. Unfortunately since I work in a district with such limited funding, these simple tools are over looked at the elementary level.

My students loved the measurement unit, that we just finished. I try to develop an inquiry based learning environment in my classroom. This encourages my students to develop questions and question their results. They were able to link what they know about measurement to this new unit. They learned to find the mass of many objects and liquid. Watching them problem solve this was truly inspiring. They have asked when we are going to use the tools again and if they were going to need them in high school. I think that we will incorporate the tools you gave us into other units as well.

I love bringing inquiry into my classroom. The students find these types of lessons engaging and extremely beneficial. I can not express how thankful we are! Your generosity will be appreciated for many years as I will get to use these tools with my students many times”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Mirrione

  • Science Science Everywhere!

    Funded Dec 7, 2009

My students have been chasing me around the classroom with so much excitement. They can not wait to start building the solar system. Many of them have gone home and done research on the topics we have been working on. When the bell rings and we are in the middle of a science lesson they don't want to get up and get their things they want to stay in school longer because they want to continue their learning. All this excitement and hunger for knowledge would not be possible without your help and support.

As a teacher working within a low income community many of the students come to us without motivation and to see how they are motivated and willing to do research and find more things on the topic has really moved me. I am so excited to see how their projects and reports will turn out. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you have done. Thanks you very much.”

  • Adventures in Light and Waves

    Funded Oct 30, 2009

I just wanted to take the time to thank all of you again for your generous donations. The students were so excited to participate in lab work using the equipment purchased during our Adventures in Light unit.

The concepts of wave and light behavior can be difficult for middle level learners to grasp. Using Slinkys to investigate different types of waves and wave behaviors including wave speed, wavelength and frequency allowed the students to see and manipulate variables to truly understand the concepts. The light box and diffracting glasses allowed the students to experience first had how light interacts with different materials. They were able to use prisms, lenses and mirrors to learn about refraction and reflection.

Thanks to your generosity not only my students but all of our 8th grade students will be able to achieve a deeper understanding of light and waves. ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Davis

  • Illuminate Learning For All

    Funded Jan 3, 2010

I cannot thank you enough; our classroom technology dreams have come true. With your very generous donations our classroom is able to enjoy interactive websites as a whole class. Our learning has been taken to the next level. The twenty-three kindergarten students are able to view a website as a class, view video streaming from by Discovery Education streaming. Our class has been able to make our white wall interactive with the use of the projector, an inferred pen and wii remote. With your help our classroom has been brought up to the twenty-first century with technology. Having the LCD projector allows for anything done with a computer to been seen by the whole class. They are delighted and use it everyday. All the students are able to interact with the computer. Again I cannot thank you enough for caring about education and making students successful. Your donations and dedication to help student's, teachers and schools allows for dreams to come true.

  • Glowing Magnetic Paintings

    Funded Oct 9, 2009

I would like to take the opportunity to express how your generous donations have impacted my classroom. One of the elemental metaphors used to understand the draw of an engaging aesthetic experience is that of attraction and energy. The magnets, iron particles, and glow paint allowed me literalize the metaphorical so that these concepts no longer remain in the abstract, but become tangible.

Using the magnets behind the paper, students painted their paper with glue and sprinkled the iron particles on the paper. When the glue dries students then paint the surface with glow paint. The result is an abstraction of a surface with two kinds of energy. My students can now talk about the energy of something visual in new ways.

  • Poetry in Motion

    Funded Oct 23, 2009

I am so very thankful for your donation to my classroom. When the books were first presented to the students their hands went up immediately to ask, "When can we sign them out?" They were so excited to read them. The girls grabbed Love Letters and Dear Mother, Dear Daughter! The boys wanted the sports and nature poems. This is such a wonderful selection to expose them to poetry. We will be starting with reciting a poem in front of the class. The students are busily trying to find one that suits them. I wish I could share the poetry that will come after which I will be entering in a local poetry contest!!! Your donation has made our classroom have many more choices in an area that was neglected before. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

  • Another Notebook Please??

    Funded Oct 29, 2009

My second grade students and I would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your donation that supplied each one of them with a brand new notebook and a supply of notebooks for the rest of the year.

It's amazing how we often take so many things for granted and never in my life did I expect to have to ask for help with supplying basic classroom necessities such as notebooks, but I did have to ask.... and the response I got was beyond anything I could have imagined. I can't thank you all enough for your generosity and your understanding of the needs of students in an urban school district.

My students often start a new unit by doing a taxonomy of words that have to do with the topic we will be studying. This is an activity that my students absolutely love and without them knowing builds their vocabulary and their knowledge of the topic when they think they are just enjoying brainstorming. We usually do a class taxonomy, but with our new notebooks, they now all have their own place to keep each taxonomy we do, to add words whenever they want, and to use it as a resource when writing or doing independent work.

When I told my students they were each getting a new notebook that would become their taxonomy notebook, some of actually clapped and a giant "YES" was shouted. This made me realize how much the small things really do matter and how incredibly grateful I am and they are for the opportunity to have another classroom tool/resource to foster the growth and development of these young minds.

    Thank you so much!!!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Goodreau

  • Math Literacy Connection

    Funded Oct 11, 2009

On behalf of myself and my fifth grade students I would like to send a great big thank you! The students absolutely love reading all the different stories. We are having so much fun using our math and literacy skills during reading time.

The kids have quickly found a favorite book called, "Pigs will be Pigs." While reading this book the kids had the opportunity to work with money and apply their math and reading skills to real life situations. We have determine which items the Pig family could order from both McDonalds and Wendy's. This book has helped my students to see that they can apply their skills in school to other areas of their lives. Thank you so much for opening this wonderful door for our students.”

  • ICE, ICE, BABY!!!

    Funded Nov 1, 2009

Thank you so much for your contribution to my classroom. It is so difficult to keep ice from melting in order to perform and demonstrate changes of state experiments. The refrigerator will also enable me to actually do dissections this year and keep the specimens from rotting. I greatly appreciate the time you took to seek out the donorschoose organization and selecting my proposal. It is kind people like yourselves that remind society that there are still good people out there, doing the right thing. Thank you again from the bottom on my heart.”

    With gratitude,
