Here I GROW AGAIN!! Yep, this is my fifth year participating in Mustaches for Kids. That's right, for the next four weeks, I will be subjecting myself to public humiliation and private doubt by growing what will no-doubt be a ridiculous looking Mustache. In order to justify this endeavor I need your support. Please sponsor my Mustache by picking a classroom project from the list below to support. And wish me and my Mustache luck. • Exploring Latin American Studies in an Urban School

    Funded Dec 11, 2010

I cannot express enough my gratitude to you for helping our new Latin American Studies course launch in the Spring 2011. With your donations, my students are now exposed to rich resources on the study of Latin American indigenous, political and social histories. The donated books used in our class has not only given my students an opportunity to learn their own history but also advance their reading comprehension, college preparation and writing skills.

The goals to provide a rigorous and relevant curriculum has been met thanks to this list of current books and thought provoking writers such as Chasteen, Neruda, Galeano and Marti. Most of our students are of Latin American descent, second generation and share an Afro-Latino history. These books has helped them connect to their history and therefore increase the high influx of reaction and action research papers.

These books are cherished and well respected by my students. They really appreciate the support and I am very happy with the turn out so far with the class and blog discussions, research papers and presentations. Thank you so much.”

    With gratitude,

  • Lights! Camera! Action!: Capturing Our Communities On Film

    Funded Nov 29, 2010

I want to thank you all again for your generous donations of the flip cameras. The children are really enjoying using them! Their using them to practice their science investigation presentations, to listen to themselves recite poetry and to interview one another. It has raised my students' motivations to speak in front of a group.

Today's students are wired for technology, so it is imperative that the public education system provide technological avenues to keep them engaged and excited about learning. I started teaching six years ago and we have had to deal with budget cuts every year (it has become the norm). It is donors like you that are helping keep our public school classrooms as powerful learning centers. ”

  • Worms Ate My What? And Made Huh? Then I planted In It? Yup.

    Funded Nov 19, 2010

WOW everyone thank you so much for helping to make our project a reality! It started out as an idea to keep the snack time garbage to a minimum and turned into a really cool project that was so much more than just composting our trash!

Although we haven't quite made enough compost to plant our flowers yet, we have seen some amazing stuff happen! Our worms had babies! I knew it was a possibility to see, but monitoring our worms for so many weeks we were able to see the whole process from reproducing to the actual births of the worms.

Our next steps are to take our compost and plant some seeds to show full circle how animals need plants and how plants need animals to continue growing. It's a beautiful way to show the circle of life.

Thank you again for giving these moments to my students! ”

  • Marvelous Mosaic Mural to Inspire Happiness

    Funded Dec 14, 2010

I would like to personally thank all of you for your generous donation. My students and I are so incredibly excited to get started working on the mosaic mural. We have polled the students in school and have found what makes them happy. Our mural will include a sunny day with flowers and rainbows.

Although we have yet to start gluing the tile, everyone is really excited to begin. We have sorted all the chips, so we know what we have to work with. This class works together so well that the mural is going to be outstanding. They are excited to hang it up so students can see it as they enter school each morning.

Many younger students can't wait to come into my class so, they too, can leave behind a class art project for all to see. My students would not have been able to do this without your generous help so thank you.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Waugh

  • Art Classroom in Need of Art!

    Funded Dec 9, 2010

I can't fully express my joy and gratitude for your donation towards my project. It is great that you value art education as much as I do.

The posters you have funded will allow the students to see with great clarity both historical and contemporary art works. In addition, the posters will help illustrate concepts that I am trying to teach them, such as various ceramic hand-building techniques.

Many students are interested in ceramics, but they are disillusioned that because they don't have much experience drawing, let alone sculpting, they assume they are no good at art.

The different materials I have requested will help my students become more exposed to the world of art and build their confidence, that not everyone has to be a good draftsman to be an amazing artist.

Your help has ensured that my students get the exposure to the art world, they desperately need. ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Mroz

  • Tell Me A Story: Norman Rockwell

    Funded Nov 8, 2010

    Hi,

My art unit on Norman Rockwell is almost finished and I would like to thank you again for your generous donation. My students were able to visit the museum and view the Norman Rockwell exhibit, so when the art materials arrived and they saw that they were going to work on "real" canvas panels they were very excited!

After I they wrote their stories about themselves and sketched their own stories they were given the panels to begin the lesson. I noticed right away that they put more thought into their project, were very carefully about space/colors/ etc. because of the pride they showed from working on canvas. The donated painted was just the icing on the cake! The quality was much better then the usual more inexpensive paint I order. The colors were bolder, and not as transparent which gave a more polished look to their work.

I was going to display their finished work in the halls, but most can't wait to take it home and show their family. This is an art lesson they will always cherish!

    THank you again

    Cynthia”

  • Wet-on-Wet Painting in Second Grade!

    Funded Dec 1, 2010

This note is a small token of my gratitude for your generosity. We have been exploring watercolor painting with joy! As we continue our year-round unit on fairy tales, we are creating a painting for each story. Little Red Riding Hood, Jack's Beanstalk, and Rapunzel's Tower have all come to life through the watercolor materials that you have given to us.

The vivid colors have brightened our hallway, and each student's individual artistic talent is being cultivated. With the current budget shortfall, these high-quality watercolors would never have made it to our classroom. Thank you for saving the day!”

  • New Lab Needs Bunsen Burners!

    Funded Dec 11, 2010

Thank you so much for helping to provide Bunsen BURNERS, the chemistry tool, to my students and me. The construction of our lab has been a saga, we have waited all year for the construction company to finally finish their work so that we can start ours. It's March and our water was just turned on yesterday! That being said, it may be a while until we can show you photos of our bunsen burners in action, but, I promise you, the kids cannot wait to "blow stuff up." Perhaps you're less excited and more concerned about the sound of that, but in truth, we are excited to feel like we're doing serious chemistry like professionals chemists do. Thank you for everything you do for classrooms in need!”

  • Rugrats Need A Rug!

    Funded Nov 29, 2010

Thank you all so very much for your generous donations for our new rug! It has made our classroom a warm, homey and comfortable place to learn and explore.

When the children first saw the rug they were torn between wanting to roll around on it and wanting to carefully tiptoe around it so as not to sully it. Even the custodian plopped himself down on the rug as soon as he'd put it place!

The children love it, it's clean, beautiful and plush. Our lessons take place on our magic purple carpet. It seems to have soothed the uncomfortable wriggles and squirming. The children listen with less fussing around, and look forward to playing and doing their work on it. The rug has vastly improved the quality of our life in the classroom.”

  • A Bug in History

    Funded Nov 12, 2010

Thank you so much for making this project happen! It's been quite an exciting experience hosting live, wriggling and fast-growing worms. As a class, we grew our silkworms from eggs that were incredibly tiny (smaller than sesame seeds). We then got to watch and care for them. More importantly students got to see something pretty remarkable that they probably would never be able to see for themselves in person. It was also a subject that most kids didn't think twice about beforehand. The silkworms became the talk of our school and students from other grades would stop by throughout the day to see them. The worms grew at a super speed! Eventually we had to say goodbye to the worms and allow them to cocoon themselves.

Watching the silkworms cocoon encouraged a whole lot of pointing with "ooohs" and "do you see this one?" from the students. For some of our children, going right up to the silkworm tank was the first thing they would do when they walked into the classroom. Things got even more exciting when the cocoons finally hatched and out sprang these delicate white moths. Students were thrilled to be able to hold them and watch them flutter in their hands. They learned all sorts of facts about these domesticated insects. Having these insects gave our students a piece of nature inside a very urban classroom. Just recently our silkworm project ended as their life cycle finished. Students keep asking if we're going to get more. We saved the cocoons and are giving them away as prizes to students for good merit and academic achievement in our upcoming unit.

I can't possibly explain how much gratitude I feel for you all. It really is because of you that my students and I were able to have such a unique experience that they won't soon forget. This was a project that stretched across curriculum and invited the interests of adults and kids in our school building. It's a project that I would love to repeat next year. I truly owe you all and Donors Choose a million thank yous for all you've done. Thank you again for supporting us and being patient with our endeavor. All the best to you and all the other lives I'm sure you'll continue to inspire in the future.

    With gratitude,

    Teacher
