• Ladies and Gentlemen, the Circus Parade Is about to Begin!

    Funded Aug 23, 2009

Thank you once again for funding our project. The juggling equipment and body soxs have made a positive impact on my physical education classes. Your support not only impacts our annual circus performance but also all of the students at our great school. During our unit on juggling, the students really liked trying the Diablo. They were a little difficult to use but some of the students did have success. The students liked the new feathers and were impressed on how long they were. The grip juggling balls and the Luna stixs provided more equipment for the students to share and added another dimension to the unit. We recently started practicing for our 17the annual Circus and the students are very excited to show off the new equipment. Jugglers range in age from 6-9. The six dancers using the body soxs range in age from 7-9. They will probably be the hit of the show. Have a wonderful day.”

  • Keyboards for Kids

    Funded Sep 16, 2009

    Dear Donors Choose,

What a wonderful organization you are! Because of you, I now have enough keyboards to be able to use them in my regular music classes. My students in grades three through five are learning the music alphabet and how it relates to the keyboard. They have learned how to use the pattern of the sets of black keys to

find all the "C's" on the keyboard and are able to recognize the sequence of the

notes----CDEFGABC etc. They are also able to show what an octave is. They

have been busy composing songs and playing them for their own classmates as

well as for other classes. This has been such a positive experience for them and has boosted their confidence level in themselves and in each other.

The camera you also provided has given me the opportunity to photograph

their progress and their enthusiasm. We have so much more to do with these

keyboards and your generosity has allowed me to expand this popular part of my

music program by allowing more students to learn and participate in learning how

to play keyboards. Our next step will be using our music alphabet and learning how

the notes are placed on the music staff. Again, thank you so much for taking such

an interest in our young students. Because of our diverse population and our 75%

volume of free and reduced lunch and being a very low-income district with no

extra funding available, you have enabled our students to have these wonderful

keyboards to help enrich their music knowledge.

    Thank You!!!!

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Dufour

  • We Learn by Seeing, Hearing, and Doing

    Funded Aug 23, 2009

I apologies for the lateness of this thank you letter. when planning this project I did not take into account the winter break and our testing schedule. With that out of the way let me say, Thank You for your gifts of technology. This year our Gifted and talented students have been exploring reading and literacy with the added dimension of the visual aid that you helped supply.

The portable projector supplied by all you good folks has served many purposes this year and will continue to serve the students I work with for years to come. Here are a few examples of how we have merged visual projection with our current curriculum. First we have the daily use of the document camera and the projector. The document camera actually takes the image of any book and sends it to the projector. As you may guess this is a powerful tool when I use a text to read aloud to the group, students show the work they have written in their notebooks with the entire class and I demonstrate math problems for everyone to see. Second implementation of the projector is in its use as a portable multi-media device. With our gifted and talented classroom working in a variety of school settings, the ability to project our PowerPoint presentations and documents in any room has been a valuable resource. The third implementation this year has been the incorporation of the document camera, the smart board and the projector. In this setting we utilize the full potential of the projector as a multimedia teaching device. the projector is connected to a computer that projects an image onto an active white board that student are able to draw, write and manipulate as if their fingers were a computer mouse and the white board were a chalkboard students have been underlining key phrases in there texts, identifying star constellations, manipulating goggle earth web properties and exploring in a way that was not possible without your help.

I know some of this information has been technical but the fundamental message I hope to share with you is this: You have reached out and touched the lives of many inner city youth that so desperately needed your help. You touch will be felt for years to come as these students share their learning experiences with others and more students come to access your gift. Again I thank you and look forward to the day that these students will show the generosity that you have modeled for them.”

  • Bringing Music Class into the 21st Century

    Funded Sep 2, 2009

Thank you so much again for donating the Groovy Music Series to our school. My students have been very excited to use it and they ask to use it all the time. Since the materials have been received, all 800 students have been able to use the program at least two and three times. There are two parts to each program; explore and create. With the exploration part of the program, the students learn more about music, including instruments and theory that is appropriate for their level. In the create portion of Groovy Music, each student creates music using pictures that represent different rhythms, melodies, chords, arpeggios, etc. They are able to create many different songs, using the preprogrammed pictures, and once they are familiar with Groovy Music, the students can go in and adjust the instrumentation as well as the notation and create their own unique parts and songs. We will be having classes later in the year that will focus on listening to each of the students compositions.

Again, I thank you all for your generous donations. Without your help, my students would never have had the opportunity to use such a wonderful program. They are learning while enjoying themselves and they are discovering talents that many of them never knew they had and for that, I thank you with all my heart!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Schraut

  • We See the Light!

    Funded Aug 20, 2009

Thank you so much for the lighting supplies you have sent our children. When we started this program three years ago, I walked into a completely empty stage - bare walls, no equipment, and few kids.

We have a great staff and administration who bend over backwards to help our department. However, there are only so many resources to go around.

We have build our department up to the point where about 9% of the student population performs in our department at some point during the year.

Your donation helps the students see that they and our department are special and important. By giving them lighting equipment, these students don't just learn about the performing arts. They experience first hand how teamwork, motivation, and creativity impact their work and themselves. Thank you again for your donation!”

  • What Exactly Are Freckles?

    Funded Aug 21, 2009

I would like to thank you for your generous donation of materials for our third grade Freckle Juice project. All of the students and teachers were excited to receive the brand new books, teacher's guide, and paints. I have mailed copies of letters from the students thanking you for your generosity.

Since we have received these materials, the students have participated in many small group reading sessions. They have been able to read chapters from the book and discuss them with their classmates. Students are becoming more fluent readers by reading these books. Currently, we are working on developing a Freckle Juice commercial. The students plan to invite their parents to class once we have the production complete. They are very excited about this and look forward to reading each day.

I am so grateful you made this possible for our third grade students. You have provided engaging reading materials to be shared with everyone. Students are also able to participate in dramatic play and gain experiences with speaking in front of others while having fun with a book. We will be able to use these books each year with our third grade students. Thank you again for your generosity and support in the education of students.

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Williams

  • "Leaving my MARK" in ART

    Funded Aug 23, 2009

I thank you for believing in my program. Your donations are giving these young kids the opportunity to leave a positive mark within the school they spent four years in. Knowing that we have the supplies needed is a great feeling.

We have 324 students who plan on completing a ceiling tile. Many kids walk with their heads down and now they are looking up. You have made such a difference in so many lives with your donation.

They will also be able to take the skills taught to them, as well as, the confidence gained with them in the future. The pride that I see on their faces is such a great feeling. They spend countless hours making their projects just right. They have all realized that something worth having is worth working hard for.

Again, thank you for believing in our students and our art department. Thanks for keeping art in public schools alive.”

    Mrs. Andries

  • "Sing Us a Song, You're the Piano Man..."

    Funded Aug 23, 2009

I had been planning our piano curriculum over the summer, without really knowing if we would have instruments to play on come Fall. What a joy it was to see the 'Your Project is Funded' notification. I am very excited to have the chance to inspire, create and share the gift of music using our new keyboards. In a superficial, materialistic and isolated society, music is one way for young people to connect with themselves, but it is also a bridge for connecting with others. Your contributions will help our children learn to communicate on a different level, allowing even our most shy student to express him/herself through this non-verbal medium. Music has a great power for bringing people together. With so many forces in this world acting to drive wedges between people, it's important to preserve those things that help us experience our common humanity. Thank you for your gift, and be assured that it will bear a rich reward in the lives of our young men and women. ”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Sukumaran

  • Unpitched Percussion Upgrade

    Funded Sep 20, 2009

Thank you for your generous donations to purchase the unpitched percussion instruments for my general music classroom. The students are so eager and delighted to play them! My third graders composed their own eight-beat pieces last week using the instruments of their choice. The chime tree is especially popular, as I choose a well-behaved student to play it as the class exists the room. Of course, they have to be quiet to hear it. The children have had to make determinations based on the various timbres of the new instruments.

For example, the maracas and beaded maracas are good for keeping a steady beat, but the thunder drum, finger cymbals, and rainstick are not.

They are most amused, I think, by the slide whistle, a sound they know from Spongebob.

Everyone wants to play the kokiriko. It is as much fun to look at as to hear.

The castanets and the piccolo cabasa add joyful color to anything we play.

Again, thank you for your selfless generosity.

    &nbsp”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. O'Donnell

  • Music Motivates

    Funded Aug 22, 2009

Thank you very much for donating money so that musical instruments and books could be purchased for my classroom. The kids were very excited when the materials came and couldn't wait to play the instruments. The drums and the cymbals are the most popular. As you can tell by the faces in some of the pictures, the kids like to play the cymbals as loud as possible.

The children have also enjoyed the books. Some of the books were placed in the classroom library for the children to read. Other books I am saving for class read-alouds because they go along with our curriculum. Our favorite book to read as a group is The Animal Boogie. The kids get to sing, dance, and play the instruments. The book is also very predictable, so the kids like to "read" it when they have time for partner reading.

Thank you again for the classroom supplies. The children and I are really enjoying them”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Ochs
