  • A Global Journey

    Funded Aug 10, 2015

Thank you so much for donating to my classroom. These materials came at just the right time with our units! The students LOVED the animal specimen tubs and thought the fossils that came with them were very cool. The animal activity tub included many different lesson ideas for me to use during the day. The continent game was very helpful when checking for understanding during our unit. The students were able to answer questions about oceans and locations with the game. Thank you again for all you support!”

  • Deaf Scientists Learning Projectile Motion via Nerf guns!

    Funded Jun 18, 2015

What a great project!! The kids LOVED Nerf guns (of course) but many mentioned that they'd never really thought about the parabolic shape that the arrows, balls and disc follow, nor did they think about aiming a huge slingshot at a basketball hoop to try to sink a basket, via a slingshot. Discussing force and angles was really fun, and when we went outside to launch the projectiles, they were seeing it through new, more scientific eyes.

Thank you so much for your donations, this is definitely a repeat activity for next year, and even later this school year with my physics class. It also provides a quick, very engaging activity for students of all ages, whether it's science class, science club, or a more advanced physics class analyzing the trajectory of the objects.

I can't thank you enough for your very kind-hearted generosity!”

  • Help Engage "Super" Learners with Movement Stools!

    Funded Jun 3, 2015

I am so excited to share how much we are getting out of our Hokki Stools that you provided for our classroom. My students use our stools every single day. I use them during whole group instruction for my two daily paper passers to enjoy. This provides the chance for everyone in the classroom to use the stools. We also use the stools daily for specific students who benefit from movement while sitting on them while completing work. I have seen a tremendous improvement in work quality and focus for many of my students. Our math and reading scores have been jumping all year, and I know the Hokki stools have a part in our progress.

When I first received the Hokki Stools I wanted to open them with my students. Any unknown box is exciting but when they opened them they were immediately intrigued. They all had the chance to try sitting on the stool and we all decided that they were a tool and not a toy in our classroom. We use them as tools to help us learn and grow. Some friends need them more than others and that is okay. We work together and use our resources to benefit our entire class. The growth that we have seen has been amazing and I cannot express my gratitude enough. Your kind donations have made a huge difference and will continue to do so.

In 2nd Grade we have begun addition and subtraction of 3 digit numbers and we are building our skills of understanding numbers and how they operate together. We are also improving our reading and writing skills every day. Currently we are learning all about maps and what they mean to us! We are learning so many social and emotional skills as well. Thank you for donating the materials to make sure we have beneficial and positive learning in our classroom. You rock!”

  • iPads for Intervention

    Funded May 20, 2015

I don't know how to say thank you enough for the ability to put technology in my students' hands. My students love coming to their Title I group time every day for the chance to work on the iPads. I am constantly hearing the phrase, "Are we going to use the iPads today?" Over the summer I was able to research a ton of educational apps and purchase quite a few to use during my intervention time. The students are getting to know quite a few and have begun to pick out favorite apps that they request to play. I will say these iPads are definitely a hit in the classroom!

As the teacher I am having fun planning exciting ways to incorporate the iPads into my group times. There are so many apps to explore and use. I have been using the iPads one-on-one with my kindergarten language arts students to work with letter recognition and letter formation. In math we have been using them for one-to-one correspondence, counting, number order, and number formation. In first grade and second grade I begin each language arts group with the letter flashcard app to go over the letters and their sounds. They the students get to use fun apps to practice their spelling words, and phonics patterns. We also have been able to download digital stories to read. During my first and second grade math groups we have been able to work with number lines, counting on, subtraction, shapes, and rounding. I have also downloaded an amazing app that allows students to collaborate with one another sharing from screen to screen. The Bluetooth keyboards have also allowed the students to have the ability to write stories, using Google Docs, and Google Slides.

I just want to say thank you so much again for supporting my project, because this project increased student learning to the maximum in my class. The students are very motivated to have iPad time, not even realizing that the only apps on the iPad are educational apps. The students really enjoy learning through games. I have already noticed in my 2 weeks of having intervention groups, growth in my students with their letter knowledge. I have had at least 5 of the 8 kindergarten students that I am working with learn the letters in their name since we started.”

  • Moldy Movie Stars

    Funded Jun 17, 2015

Thank you for providing my students with a camcorder that they can use to process their own learning and share it with others. They are so excited to be filming video tutorials that teach their parents, students who were absent, and future students all they've learned in our first ecosystems unit. Their presentations answer questions such as:

o What's the difference between an ecosystem and a habitat?

o How can I keep from getting these vocabulary words confused with each other - Consumer, Carnivore, Predator? They're similar but not the same.

o What are the different types of consumers? Can an animal fit into more than one category?

o What is a food web? How is it different than a food chain? How do I draw a food web correctly without making mistakes?

o What are the 5 things that all animals need to survive?

o What's the difference between physical and behavioral adaptations? What are some examples of each?

o What do the words producer and consumer mean? What are producers and why are they called producers? Ditto with consumers.

o What is a predator and what is a prey? Can an animal be both?

The level of engagement that this video tutorial project has created is incredible! Students are working together in teams to prepare and create their multimedia presentations. This never would have been possible without your purchase of the camcorder. I'll be using it with my students for years to come!”

  • Making Meaning With Comprehension Strategies

    Funded May 18, 2015

This has been such a great day! I just got back from my Thinking Maps, Making Meaning With Comprehension Strategies workshop. Today focused on how to more effectively incorporate Thinking Maps with our reading comprehension lessons. I really enjoyed that the workshop showed how to do multiple maps with a single story, as well as how to pick different maps depending on the text that is being read. I am excited to implement these strategies with my class in the fall and take my student's reading to the next level. Thank you for making this day of training possible. It was a day well spent!”
