  • Service Learning through Literacy

    Funded Mar 17, 2010

Thank you so much for your contributions to this project. My students love reading the books that you have donated to our classroom. Your generosity is greatly appreciated!

When we received the books, my students could not wait to start reading. All of the students reminisced on their early childhood when they saw the Dr. Seuss books and other classics. The simply familiarity engaged them immediately and fueled their desire to re-read the texts in Spanish. Even the very early level books were popular because the students gained a lot of confidence once they saw that they knew many of the words.

One thing that I have loved about these resources is that every student has been impacted by the books. No matter the skill level of the students, everyone is able to find something that they feel comfortable reading. Having students read in Spanish is often a struggle because they are overwhelmed by the multiple skills that they need to use at once in reading and comprehending the books. The variety of books that you helped to put in our classroom allowed each child to find something that they could explore and conquer.

I really enjoyed when the students shared their availabilities with younger students. Students practiced and practiced until they felt comfortable presenting the Spanish texts to their peers and younger students. It was so exciting to watch the growth that they experienced in the process of preparing to share their Spanish skills. It was obvious that my students were proud of themselves and the knowledge that they gained over the school year. This learning experience was used as a service learning opportunity for the students. Due to your donations, my students were able to share their Spanish language literary skills with other students and spread the beauty of the Spanish speaking world. Some of the students have already discussed that they want to continue the service project next year. So this is just the beginning of what these resources will provide to my students!!!

Thank you so much for your contributions. Knowing that we have support outside of our classroom really makes my work more meaningful. The students appreciate the support from you as well. Learning and teaching in our urban district can be difficult, but with your support, we are able to find success. Thank you again for your support. ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Nelson

  • Livening Up History

    Funded Mar 11, 2010

Thank you so much for your support. The projector has made a huge impact in my classroom. Instead of just talking about, or reading about the events of history, my students have been able to engage with history. We watched video footage of the protests at Central High School in Little Rock, saw images of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and watched part of Obama's Inaugural address.

Without this generous gift my students would not have been able to completely grasp the events or importance of U.S History. Thanks you again. ”

  • But This Isn't English: Reading Across the Curriculum

    Funded Dec 22, 2009

Thank you most sincerely for your donations to our project! My students and I have really enjoyed using our copies of "The Little Prince" in class this year. We have used these books to increase our vocabularies, work on our critical thinking skills, build literacy... but also just to have fun with a great book!

It has been said that the achievement gap is actually a literacy gap, and your donations are helping us to fix that problem. By integrating this text into our French curriculum, my students have had the opportunity to study a beautiful story and increase their reading levels at the same time.

My students thoroughly enjoyed working with this book, and I can't wait to use this book with my classes again next year!

    Merci Beaucoup!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Suskey

  • Projector for English!

    Funded Feb 19, 2010

I would like to wholeheartedly thank you for your generous donation to my classroom. I cannot help but laugh: now that my students have grown accustomed to the LCD projector, whenever I use the whiteboard they complain about my handwriting. They never used to say a thing about it before!

I use the projector multiple times a week. My students and I have thoroughly enjoyed using PowerPoint Presentations when working with vocabulary acquisition. I will show a picture and either explain how it relates to the word or have students create their own explanations. This has been invaluable for my visual learners.

If you were to ask my students, they'd tell you that they like watching movie clips at the beginning of class. Indeed, this has been a tremendous investment tool. Before having students engage in a classroom debate about whether or not we live in a "colorless society," I had students view a clip from The Great Debaters and asked them to identify uses of ethos, pathos, and logos.

We just recently finished our unit on To Kill a Mockingbird. For their final product, students were required to research a topic from either the 1930s (when the novel takes place) or the 1960s (when it was published). All students needed to present their findings to the class; many chose to do this through a PowerPoint Presentation. I cannot tell you how great it felt to sit back and watch my students teach and engage the entire class!

Again, thank you so much for your generous donation. Your gift will help students for years to come. ”

  • What was your favorite book as a child?

    Funded Dec 14, 2009

Thank you so much for your contribution to my classroom. The LeapFrog books have been a tremendous addition to our library. My students are able to use them on their own during workshop and center time. It has become one of their favorite activities due to the wonderful selection of books. Many of the books are classics that my students were unaware of but are now becoming quite fond of. It is so exciting to see them engaged and excited about reading a new book. My students and I thank you very much for you generosity!”

  • It Is Never Too Early To Learn!

    Funded Nov 24, 2009

Thank you so much for our classroom resources! We use each and every one of our materials every day. In the morning, we all gather on the carpet to use our calendar activity set. The students love the estimation jar and are so excited to solve the "Pick-A-Problem" each day. This calendar has truly had a positive effect upon our math skills.

Our math test scores are improving and the "Make-A-Pattern" is helping our ability to identify patterns and get excited about math! We also use our organization station and job chart every morning for classroom mail and classroom jobs. Our jobs rotate each week and students love to check the mouse and see what their weekly assignment will be every Monday.

Lastly, our schedule pocket chart is such a wonderful resource to have in our classroom so that we can keep track of how much time we spend on each subject every day. It has also helped us to reinforce time skills during math class. Thank you again for our new resources. We are so grateful for your support!”

  • Books!

    Funded Dec 8, 2009

Thank you so much for helping fund a project that brought interesting books to the students in my classroom. Since this project was funded, 27 students who had never read a book "for fun" in their lives, finished a book completely independently.

Some students are asking to take the books home to finish them for homework, even though they won't complete any other assignments outside of school. I have witnessed a miracle in my classroom, and it would not have been possible without your support.

From the bottom of my heart, and the hearts of my students, I want to thank you for your generous donation that brought books to children who would have otherwise gone without. Thank you so much.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Welsh

  • And Bingo Was The Game-O

    Funded Dec 19, 2009

Thank you so much for your generosity! Your donation has provided my class with a BINGO library. The class set of BINGO games has allowed me to reach my students through another medium aside from simply talking to them or having students complete mindless worksheets. The students simply love playing BINGO. We have played BINGO as a class numerous times. Now they are BINGO experts, and I can break them up into several smaller groups and allow one student to act as the caller. Students are given the opportunity to play BINGO during their daily workshops or after either a small group of students or the class as a whole has finished their work. The BINGO library has proved to be especially effective for those students who are primarily visual or kinesthetic learners and need to see and touch in order to truly understand a concept.

Included with this letter is a set of thank you notes from my students as a token of their appreciation for your kindness. These pictures capture their use of the BINGO library during a daily workshop. Once again, your donation allows me to continue supporting my students in the best possible manner by providing them with as many tools and resources necessary to help them excel in the urban classroom. ”

  • We Need Art Supplies! Please!

    Funded Dec 7, 2009

I cannot thank you enough for your generous donations. My students cherish the art supplies that you have allowed for them to play and learn with. They adore the playdough and have explored with it in so many ways. They have made letters, snakes, spaghetti, snowmen, cities, forests, etc with the play dough. We use the pipe cleaners to make letters and do various art projects. The foam letters are one of the most used resources in my classroom. They are just constantly naming letters, sounds, and creating words with them.

My students have very little and they feel very special in my class. We have talked various times about the donations and they are so grateful. They are elated that people believe in them as students and their academic possibilities! They tell me each day, "Ms. Savage I am on the way to college. I just need to keep learning to read and write!".

Your gracious gifts have impacted the lives of my students and will continue to each day!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Stern

  • Math Money Paychecks to Reward Attendance and Behavior

    Funded Dec 8, 2009

I cannot say thank you enough. You gift has made such an impact on my classroom. The math money system is up and running! It motivates kids daily to be at school, make right decisions and work hard in class. Some students have been saving their math money in order to buy the larger prizes while others are excited to spend the money the day that they receive their paychecks. At the end of the first semester, I hosted an awards assembly where students were recognized for perfect attendance and high achievement in class. Although some were hesitant to get up on stage to get their awards, afterward students and their parents were so proud of their accomplishments. It was encouraging to me to read thank you letters that the students wrote for the supplies that you provided as well. Students wrote about their excitement to buy new materials and their amazement at how people who don't even know them would care enough to give money to help them be successful. They also wrote about how the math money system encourages them to participate actively in math class and some have begun to enjoy math because of it. These results would not have been possible without your generous donation! My students and I thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Caldas
