To all our school friends, we want YOU to get involved. Donors Choose provides grant money to school classrooms that are in need of a number of items - many of which we at Lab School take for granted. We have selected a handful of projects that we think are worthy of receiving funds and we are so appreciative of your helping us to support these classrooms. No gift is too small, and taking the time to donate is so BIG! Thank you for helping us help others
Thank you so much for your kind donation of the crates. My classroom was a disaster at the end of each day. Teaching 32 eighth graders can be hectic enough but not having desks, lockers or any place to keep their book was difficult. Thanks to your kind donation of the plastic crates the students were able to organize their "stuff" and keep piles of texts from falling over the classroom. My assistant principal was so happy after your donation because my classroom actually became presentable.
The students also got very creative with the few extras that we received as well. One of the girls decided we could make a new library with the extras. the new classroom library became functional and fit in with the decor of the rest of the classroom.
Fianlly your kind gift will also be used for the next class I have in 2010-11. We will be able to start the year organized which is an important quality for most 13 and 14 year olds.”

Mr. Drase

Thank you very much for supporting my students and giving them a comfortable place to sit as we explore books and learn together. They were so thrilled when the carpet arrived all rolled together. They could not believe that a stranger had given us such a BIG present. They could not wait to guess what this strange and large object was! I explained to the students that the next day they should enter the room and look to see what is new in our classroom. When they entered the next day, all of the students found your surprise right away and immediately, they were ready to have a seat and learn all day! We spent part of our morning that day talking and writing about how excited we were to have a wonderful new carpet and what we were looking forward to doing on it. Overwhelmingly, students just wanted to sit or lay and read. So we spent the rest of the morning comfortably reading books. It was one of our quietest independent reading times ever! We also talked about a few "rules" so we were sure to keep the carpet looking great for the students who would be in our room next year! Their excitement was contagious; I could not help but walk around with a smile on my face that day.
Reading and sitting together has become such a pleasure in our classroom now that they have a comfortable place to sit. They are no longer stuck on the floor or at a desk; they can sit back and take in the joy of reading and they are able to concentrate as we all learn together.
Thank you so much for supporting education and supporting my students. We could not do all of the great things we do in our classroom without the support of Donors Choose and amazing donors like yourself. I hope you enjoy the pictures of some of my students s we smiled together on our new carpet and read our big books.”
I am grateful for the flashdrives that you purchased for my students. Once my students found out that I had them, they were eager to use them for all of their writing assignments. I never realized how many of my students simply did not use their computers at home because they could not print or didn't have Internet. By having the flashdrives, several projects that I had my students complete went much more efficiently and effectively.
Having the flashdrives also allowed for several teachable moments. I assumed that all of my students knew what a flashdrive was and how to use it. Several of my students realized the benefits of having a flashdrive and have since gone ahead and bought one of their own for high school.
The flashdrives helped to keep my students organized and connected to the assignments and learning that happened in class. They filled in a gap that many students struggled with as far as saving work that was started in class in order to build on it at home. I am tremendously grateful. ”

Wow! That laptop is awesome. It can fit in your purse and it works like a dream. I can't thank you enough for the generous gift that has allowed my students to publish, publish, publish! Your gift of a laptop and printer has allowed twice as many students to feel like authentic writers by publishing their original writings.
When my students first heard that someone had bought us a laptop, they couldn't believe their ears. Then, when they saw it in person, they really flipped! The portability of the laptop allows them to set up makeshift workstations wherever they can and get a lot of work done quickly. I wish they each had one!
Thank you so much for enhancing our writing program with the tools read writers need to produce authentic pieces of writing. This wonderfully small piece of technology has impacted my classroom in a huge way!”

It is very true that little things mean a lot.The easel you purchased for our classroom is used every day, multiple times each day. My students use it for presentations on the books they've read, we write our morning message on it, and we wheel it around the room to use it with small groups. Also, we're saving tons of paper as I don't have to use butcher paper nearly as often as before. Thank you for realizing that our children deserve to have nice materials in their classroom. You're also teaching them a life-long lesson on the impact of philanthropy; they were amazed (and extremely grateful) that people who don't know them would care about their education. You are good friends to your friends in whose honor you gave, and to your 6th-grade friends in room 411. Thank you.”

I would like for you to know that your support of my proposal "I Want to Read!!!" has significantly impacted my classroom. Your generous contribution of these novels has really made a difference for my students. I saw such joy on their faces when I opened the box of brand new books. It has been very rare that they have been able to enjoy brand new novels like these. I made a checkout sheet right away and each book was checked out instantly. As soon as they finish one of the novels in the Drama High series they come to me to see if any of the other ones have been returned so they can continue reading. A young man who does not think that I have any interesting novels in my classroom library immediately came to me and asked if he could check out one of the Eclipse novels. I was so pleased to see such excitement on his face when I put the book in his hands.
You provided my students with something that they desperately needed, high interest novels that they want to read. Reading is a skill that they need to be successful in life, and I want to say thank you very much for helping them to develop this skill. They are very happy with these books.”
The two Flip Video Cameras that were donated to the school music department have seen quite a bit of use in the last 3 months. They are easy for the students to use and readily available in the music room. One of the interesting things that has happened is that the students tell other teachers in the school that there are Flip Videos in the music room and so other teachers are borrowing the cameras to record special projects in their rooms.
We are a Fine and Performing Arts School and it is required that we show proof of learning. The Flip Videos allow us to do this easily. The software contained in the Flip Video system has a process that enables us to take a photo from part of the video. We use the video as well as the photos to document the learning process. The students have found this most interesting and have printed pictures, put them in frames, and hung them in the hallway outside of the music room. Parents routinely stop by to look at the photos and the monthly tours of our school always stop by to check out the photos.
Lastly, the Flip Video allows me an easy way to save all of the students performances both in the classroom and on stage. My students and I watch the video to evaluate our performance, analyze what was of high quality and what needs improvement. When my students go out into the community to perform, the Flip Video fits easily into my pocket and I can always hand it off to a parent or student to record our performance.
These little cameras provide us with an amazing amount of information and enjoyment.”
We have been using our Leap Frog books almost everyday during center time! The students get so excited when it is their turn for the "Leap Frog Center". They really enjoy reading these books while following along with the leap frog pointer.
These Leap Frog books are also used in the mornings during journal time adn silent reading time for my lower students who need that extra support. I have noticed that it is really helping their reading skills by looking at the words while they are said outloud with the leap frog pointer.
We can not thank you enough for your kind actions. Our class is forever appreciative for you and your generosity!
I can not begin to tell you how excited my students and I are about this new technology that you donated to our classroom.Every time the ELMO is turned on their eyes light up with a joy that is indescribable and has made our classroom an even greater learning environment. We asked for this donation because we needed to have the opportunity to be able to compete with the technology that is offered in schools with more funding. My students and I often have conversations about becoming productive citizens and making something great of themselves. Through your generosity the see now that people care about them and their success. You all have helped us become steps closer to our goal. You will never truly know what this ELMO means to us. This month students are doing Career presentations using the ELMO just to see these presentations and the work they put into it has been amazing. I think they are more excited about using the ELMO then the actual assignment itself. ”
Your donation has truly been a blessing. My students are enjoying using their new netbooks! When they first arrived, they could barely contain their excitement and they were amazed at how lucky they are to have such a wonderful resource in their classroom.
Since the netbooks have arrived, my students have been diligently working on writing using word processing software. We just finished up a poetry unit. It's so refreshing for them to take a step back from the traditional pencil/paper routine and use technology. Not only are they improving their writing skills, they are improving their typing skills. They also have been practicing their research skills; learning how to search the web for information and how using key search words has a big impact on search results.
Without these netbooks, my students would be limited to how often they get to use computers in their daily school routine. Since having the netbooks, they have computers at their fingertips. Using technology is not only improving their writing/research skills, its preparing them for a technology driven world. Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity!
