Off The Street and On The Court
Funded Mar 11, 2014"Whoa, they really gave them to us", " When do we have to give them back" - Are two of the many thoughts that we're said aloud when sharing the great news of our mentorship funding. In that very moment, I remembered why motivation and belief are vital when educating the youth. Students are grateful, excited, and eager to use the technology in and out of the "classroom". One male student, belted, "I'm going to write my first book using this bad boy".
Currently, we have begun to scaffold the idea of what it means to be an "active citizen". Students are using the resources to research laws, rights, community-based organization, and social issues. In researching social issues, students are documenting events that occur in their communities. The videos have become a topic of discussion in our weekly sessions. When dealing with research projects, statistics are crucial. However, facts are boring, using real-life experience via video documentaries transcends boundaries, breaks barriers, and opens doors. Our students get that and are curating their solutions with that in mind.
It is amazing how your donations have inspired the youth who are participating in the mentorship program. The most enduring and galvanizing ideas have arise through using the tablets to research social problems and finding a solution. Students are now learning what it means to be a "life long" learner. This project has boosted my teaching by allowing me to be the facilitator of such a wonderful opportunity to mentor at risk-youth who have similar upbringing as myself.”
With gratitude,
