• Heating Things Up in the Chemistry Lab!

    Funded Oct 7, 2010

The achievement gap is, by far, our nation's most troubling civil

rights issue. Please know that your gracious donations will provide

over 50 students with the laboratory equipment

they need to be successful in my science lab. These hot plates will provide my students with the opportunity to experience the

same wonderful educational experiences that their more fortunate suburban

counterparts have been afforded. Prior to getting this project funded, my chemistry lab had a single hot plate, preventing my students from performing a number of lab experiments. Now, with these valuable additions to our lab, my students will be able to explore the effects of

temperature on chemical reactions, solutions, and gases through their own first-hand experiences. Your generosity will give my students the educational opportunities that they truly deserve. My sincere thanks!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Lee

  • Learning About Our Community and Government With Photography

    Funded Oct 15, 2010

Our class has been working hard on learning about the structures and duties of the federal government. We have recently moved into learning about our local government and have been identifying our local representatives. As soon as the weather warms up we will go out in the community to explore what we see through the lens of the cameras. Students will be journaling about their observations and the changes they would like to see. Next, we will write our letters to our local and national representatives letting them know what improvements we would like to see take place in the community. You have made this all possible and we are all so grateful for your donation. This project is not only fun but also empowering. My students' learning has been enriched by your generosity! Sincerely, ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. S.

  • Listen to Learn

    Funded Nov 22, 2010

I have received the IPod Touches you helped fund in my class. Thank you for your donation to my project. My special education students were excited about getting to use them. The class was also very excited about getting new books in our classroom. My special education students are now able to listen to stories while following along with the books. On the IPod touches, we have also found several great educational apps for the students to use. The IPod touches and books are greatly appreciated. Thank you so much. ”

  • Colored Paper Saves The Day!

    Funded Oct 10, 2010

The many uses of colored paper never cease to amaze me. Most recently, we have started using colored paper to help students stay organized with their work. Green is biology, purple is Spanish, and blue is math. For a student who struggles with organization, the simple process of copying his notes onto colored paper has made it much easier to spot when a paper is in the wrong place.

Colored paper also makes beautiful projects. As you can see from the student letters, many of them just finished a figurative language unit in English in which they wrote their own poetry. The final project was to put together a poetry booklet that showcased all their poems. Students created beautiful booklets filled with their own

Thank you again for supporting my students! You are all amazing!”

  • Strengthening Our Reading Muscles!

    Funded Oct 11, 2010

Thank you so much for your generous gift to my classroom! The students absolutely love the reading materials, and they are showing so much growth in their reading skills, fluency, and comprehension. When these students first came to me, none of them were reading at grade level. Now, at the beginning of March, I have 60% of my students reading at or above grade level! My students use the materials every single day, and to see these students love reading and want to spend their time reading brings me such joy.

In our school, money is very tight, and we as teachers are not given the materials that we need to truly succeed and help our students succeed in their learning and growth. Without your help, my students would not be reaching their goals and feeling the joy and success in reading that they are today. With your help, you have helped to give these children a love of reading that they may never have developed otherwise!

Thank you so very much for your support and your help. Our class is so grateful!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Eckelmann

  • Making Information Accessible

    Funded Nov 1, 2010

Thank you so much for the paper, printer, overhead pens, and transparencies. These materials have helped me create packets for my students that include weekly homework, guided notes,

and practice problems. The transparencies have helped me show students how to do the problems in their weekly packets, and my AP students have already used the printer to print out their lab reports.

Perhaps the biggest impact you all have made in my class is the availability of paper. My students are low income, have a fairly weak history of science education, and many are English learners. In addition, they struggle with organization and note-taking skills. With the paper that was donated to my class, I am able to create weekly packets that contain the students daily warm-up, lesson, practice problems, and homework. Students have told me that it has helped them become more organized and learn the material. My English learner students greatly benefit from the cloze notes in the packets. With the overhead transparencies and overhead pens I am able to show students how to complete these notes and do the practice problems. In the past, I was never able to create these packets because they required far too much paper. My students and I are tremendously grateful”

  • Biotechnology Needs You! Part 6

    Funded Nov 22, 2010

Thank you all for supporting this project and providing my students with the resources needed to conduct our biotechnology experiments.

As you know, public education has been hit hard by our nation's economic recession. We have all been asked to tighten our belts and get by with whatever resources we have. Unfortunately, biotechnology is a very expensive field of study. Without your support, I would not have been able to offer the course to my students. Your very generous donations have kept us going throughout the fall semester.

On behalf of myself and all of my students, I thank you most sincerely.

Thank you for supporting my students and public education.”

  • 1 Computer Can Make A Big Impact For a Small Class

    Funded Nov 23, 2010

Thank you so much for your kind donations! The computer you helped provide for my classroom is a huge hit with my class. I have been able to use it for center activities like viewing educational DVDs that help increase students' phonemic awareness skills as well as to help me with attendance, online grading, and tending to my school website to increase parent contact by submitting photos and news about what is going on in our room. Donor's Choose is a wonderful gift for educators, and I am grateful that you chose my project for your donations. Thank you for making a difference for my little class!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. N.

  • The Nuts and Bolts of Music!

    Funded Sep 15, 2010

This is just a small token of my gratitude for your generous donation to my classroom. The music theory software have been used to help students learn how to read and understand musical notations. Students view music theory lessons and after performing exercises, they take assessments on the lessons they have just learned. The music theory software are used in my beginner classes as well as in my more advanced classes.

Because of recent budget cuts, our school is extremely limited in the numbers of resources that can be made available to our students. Without your help, my students would never have had these vital resources. Middle and high school instrumental students need to be able to not only learn to play an instrument, but also learn the different aspects of music.

Without donors like you, thousands of classrooms in the United States would go without.

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Greer

  • Luis Loves To Read!

    Funded Oct 10, 2010

I am happy to report that since your books arrived, several of my students who had never before finished an entire book are reading books that they truly enjoy. Cesar is almost done with Walter Dean Myers' book, "Sunrise over Fallujah," and proud to be finishing it. "Dopesick," a suspenseful thriller by the same author, is getting passed around like a hot tamale-- the minute it gets returned to the shelf, someone else wants to take it out.

At lunch the other day, Mariana was looking for a new book to read, and Brandi (who had just finished Sherman Alexie's book, "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian") told her, "You should read this one. I just finished it! It's hecka funny, but it's serious, too. It'll really get to you." That book is on its fourth reader.

I love having a special bookshelf I can count on for my reluctant readers. When they approach me and say, "I don't have a book, Ms. G," I can pick one out, and be 95% sure they'll like it and finish it.

The dictionaries are also so useful! The other day, Dulce (a great writer who is still learning English) used the intermediate dictionary, with simple, definitions, to help her finally write an essay where she had all the words she needed to express the complex thoughts she had in her head.

She got an A. And so do all of you! Thank you so much.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Gore
