  • "I Spy" Learning!

    Funded Oct 5, 2010

Thank you so much for your generous donation to my classroom. The kids love the books and want to read them everyday. Almost everyday they ask me about pictures in the book that they have never seen before. These books are helping the students to be exposed to new things and giving them the vocabulary to describe it.

It is especially helpful for my students who do not have any previous exposure to these things. It is also helpful in motivating those students who struggle with reading because they love the pictures in the books. ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Warshawsky

  • Books, Bookcases, More Books, Oh My!

    Funded Sep 28, 2010

Thank you again for helping my students begin their own home libraries! We have been talking about books, sharing books, reading books (out loud, to each other, to ourselves) all year long and now, because of your help, we have begun our own personal libraries.

Growing life long readers is one of the most important jobs a teacher has. Reading is our portal to all things new, whether you read just for the sheer pleasure of it, or to learn how to use a new gadget, or to learn how to do a new job. A well read person has a life that is enriched in almost every way imaginable. Excitement about books, and about libraries in general, is an enormous part of our life at school and your donation has helped me keep that excitement alive and growing.

Thanks again for thinking of us!

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lightbourne

  • Real-Life Reading

    Funded Sep 18, 2010

Thank you so much for donating books to our classroom library! Research shows that free-choice reading is a vital part of an effective language arts curriculum.

But we use these books for more than just "free reading." Instead of studying grammar by filling out worksheets, we use our classroom library books to find examples of good writing - different parts of speech, sentence structures, unusual punctuation, and so on. Tonight's homework, for example, will be to find (and cite!) two examples of simple sentences, two examples of compound sentences, and two examples of complex sentences.

This connects our study of grammar to the "real world." It also gives students more choice, and a sense of empowerment, in their studies. Finally, it means that each assignment is unique - these are much more interesting for me to look at than dozens of worksheets that are all the same.

Adding books to our library means more choices and more to explore! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

    With gratitude,

    Teacher

  • From ABC's to Dumas, Exupery, and Fontaine

    Funded Oct 9, 2010

I cannot thank you enough for donating to our project! My students are so incredibly excited to be reading these books in French. When they were children, they read books like The Cat and the Hat and I Will Love you Forever. In their free time right now, they devour the Harry Potter series. By your generous donations, we now have these books in our classroom in the target language.

The demeanor in my room has changed when I bring up reading. Previously, they would have some leveled readers and there were always moans and groans. Now, when I mention that we are going to read, I am met with smiles and cheers.

Our school did not have the funding to buy these books unless we tried fundraising. We are so appreciative that you all could reach into your pockets and your hearts and donate to our project. ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Gallagher

  • Building a Classroom Community Through Books

    Funded Sep 29, 2010

Thank you for your donations to my Donors Choose project to receive books for building my classroom community. My students love the books and have enjoyed thinking about the messages in them. After reading the books together, my students decided they want to do a self-directed unit of study on bullying. Currently, my students are preparing songs, poems, and short stories to teach other students in our school about bullying. I am very pleased that my students have decided to act upon the messages that these books teach.

It is amazing what our children can accomplish when they feel supported by the community and are able to learn about concepts that are important to them. Thanks again for your donation to my classroom. These books will be treasured for decades to come. ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Burckhardt

  • Rising Star Readers Seek Rockin' New Reading Material!

    Funded Oct 5, 2010

THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart! Your kindness and generosity make it possible for my students to access the materials they need to build early reading skills. Having a variety of "just-right" books in a classroom encourages children to read each day. The tools YOU provided will assist me in fostering a love of reading during their most crucial learning years. I cannot wait to share these books with my students. Again, THANK YOU for your generosity!”

    With gratitude,

    Teacher

  • Help Create Lifelong Readers

    Funded Sep 15, 2010

Thank you so much for your generous contribution to my classroom. The eleventh grade teachers have been having a lot of trouble getting students to read this year, especially the boys. (As you can see in the photos, we read during our gender-specific advisories.)

These books made a huge difference in the environment during our silent reading time. Almost all of them were immediately checked out, and students have actually found books they like and will read at school and at home. I just had a parent conference with a mom who said she was shocked that her son was now reading a book a night, after years of not reading at all.

Your contribution has made a huge and immediate impact in the lives of my students. We all thank you so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Vaca

  • What Can We Do to Fight Cancer?

    Funded Oct 12, 2009

Reading this novel turned into so much more than just reading a novel! My students became highly interested and engaged in thinking about how they could help people with leukemia the same way the main character in this book helped to raise funds for individuals with leukemia. So, this novel spurred a school wide fundraiser for children with leukemia.

The fundraiser we became involved in is entitled Pennies for Patients. My students initiated and managed this schoolwide effort in which students at the school were encouraged to collect loose change. As an incentive, the homeroom that collected the most change was awarded a pasta party. The monies were then sent to The Leukemia&Lymphoma Society to support research efforts and finding a cure.

What an amazing experience this novel has provided! It motivated my students to help change the world! Thank you for helping to change the world!”

    With gratitude,

    Teacher
