  • Starving Student Artists in Need of Supplies

    Funded May 24, 2011

I want to express my appreciation for your generosity in support of my students learning in my classroom. I was so excited when I got the new art supplies. It was great to start my classes with brand new paint, pastels, paper, and professional folders for my students to store their work in. The students I had last year that have me for a consecutive year were the most excited because they knew what kind of supplies we used the year prior. Your generosity will make an immediate difference in the lives of all my students and in the many years to come. Your personal commitment was incredibly helpful and has allowed me to teach various techniques and mediums in my art classroom that increases student creativity. Your assistance means so much to me but even more to my students. Thank you from all of us. ”

  • Technology Literate

    Funded May 2, 2011

Thank you so much for your generous contributions for our special education program. The students have been able to navigate through the Internet as well as learn how to type papers. Technology is so valuable to today's youth. Your contributions are priceless, and much appreciated at John Sloat Elementary School. We will continue to use the laptop this year to access the Internet; this tool will allow us to expand our knowledge through further research and visuals. Many of students use English as a second language so the colorful, vivid pictures on the Internet enhance their language and vocabulary.”

  • Sensory Integration: Learning Through Music & Movement

    Funded Apr 19, 2011

My students and I are so thankful for the donations you gave that made our grant possible. My students use the materials nearly every day with great big smiles on their faces! Our class has been able to incorporate learning about body parts, actions and colors through lessons that I can develop utilizing the parachute, music CDs, rhythm sticks and other materials. These are just a few of the skills that my students are able to work on with the stimuli that your donation purchased.

One of the most important skills that my students practice is being able to cooperate with others. The parachute and scooter boards have made this goal more obtainable, and the students are very eager to engage in teamwork activities. A few students that are a little shy have blossomed during these activities, becoming more vocal and energetic. It is with your help that out class is able to enjoy learning more than ever, while reaching their goals in a positive and exciting way. Thank you so much! ”

  • Is the Moon Made of Green Cheese?

    Funded Aug 30, 2010

Thank you so much for opening up the world of the night sky to my students. During our astronomy unit, we had a volunteer docent come in and do a presentation on the planets. He especially pointed out the objects that the students would be able to see using their telescopes. The students had several sessions taking apart and putting their telescopes together, so they would be familiar with how and why it works. We also took several mini-field trips around the school practicing viewing nature in our neighborhood. When the students finally took their telescopes home, they would excitedly share new things they had noticed in the night sky. There is nothing more wonderful than breaking down the confines of poverty and literally opening up the universe to curious and intelligent children. Thank you so much for helping this happen in the lives of 70 students. ”

  • Tumbling Mat for Physical Education

    Funded Apr 20, 2011

Thank you so much for these materials that we have received. The mat has allowed us to incorporate many new things. First I have now implemented this mat into our station work. I have a station with jump rope and a station with basketball dribble and with the mat we now have a sit up and push up station.

I now for the first time am starting to teach the kids how to tumble. Specifically showing them how to do a safe summersault. The little kids get a real kick out of it with there giggles and smiles. Your contribution has been great, Thanks again.”

  • I've Got It! Teacher! Teacher!

    Funded Apr 20, 2011

This is a small measure of my gratitude for your generous donation to my classroom. The white boards and dry erase markers have made a huge difference in the quality of our math program. We use them everyday to practice our math examples. As I teach the lesson I give examples in which students must take notes. I then require them to work examples on their white boards and hold them up for me to assess their knowledge. From the assessments I determine if I need to reteach or pull small groups for intervention. My productivity has increased, in my help to my students.

My students are even more excited about using white boards due to the fact that they now have one of their own. They take great pride in using and reusing their boards instead of using precious paper.

Thank you again so much for your generous donation. Without people and organizations like you, schools would not be able to afford the great resources you can provide.”

  • Avid Bookworms Crave Dynamic Enlightenment

    Funded Mar 24, 2011

My students, current and future, and I want to thank each of you for your generous donations towards the fiction and nonfiction books for our classroom. As strong believers in literacy education, you have provided my students with tools to help them succeed.

With these new books, my students will be able to choose from several different titles at varying reading levels. These young readers will experience the exhilaration that comes with reading and learning about the world around them.

I am so grateful to each and every one of you. Thank you again!”

  • Elmo is Not Just a Sesame Street Character

    Funded Feb 23, 2011

My students have been thoroughly delighted by the document camera that you so graciously gave us to use. Their attention is immediately captured when I turn off the lights, pull down the screen, turn on the LCD projector, and show them some wonderful 3D object under the amazing document camera! Thank you so much once again for your generosity. You should feel all warm and fuzzy inside with the knowledge that, because of your donation, my students and future students will be using 21st century technology to access information.”

  • Making Thinking Visible

    Funded Jan 5, 2011

It has been a wonderful few months as my students and I have had the opportunity to use the ELMO Document Camera your donations helped purchase. The ELMO was the excitement of the room when it arrived, and daily students think of new ways to use it to display their work. Regularly with each instructional unit the students are asked to use the ELMO to help demonstrate their understanding of a concept. Additionally I'm slowly turning over the usual teacher duties of recording student ideas to the students themselves. Students now lead the discussions regarding topics we've been studying. Most recently students were displaying a collection of organisms for a taxonomy project. All of the students could clearly see the characteristics of the organism displayed using the ELMO document camera. It was fun for everyone because they could all appreciate the critters close up.

It's funny how one new piece of technology can be so instrumental in changing how teachers teach and students learn. This document camera has been one of those novel pieces of technology that engages the students because it truly brings the excitement back to learning. Thank you for making this happen.”

  • Whaddya Mean???

    Funded Dec 6, 2010

My students are not from middle class families in which there is usually at least one dictionary. My students do not sit around the dinner table with their parents discussing what they did and learned in school that day. My students' parents are usually working, maybe in jail, maybe just gone. Some of them don't even have dinner, they snack and play video games all night -- sometimes without supervision. You cannot imagine the look of sheer delight when I told them our dictionaries had arrived!

They touched the smooth covers, ran their fingers along the edges, flipped through and even smelled them. Finally they asked me -- "This is mine? I can take it home? I don't have to bring it back?" Thanks to you, I was able to smile and tell them, yes, it's yours. In fact, I told them, let's put our names in them. The date! Let's put the date, so that you never forget you got this book when you were in fourth grade. Remember to put that it was a donation from Donors Choose.Org. Remember always that there are people out there who know how important education is.

Almost once a week (sometimes more) I ask them where they will find the information they need for a certain homework assignment. It's like a chorus from their hearts -- OUR DICTIONARY!! I have seen an improvement in their writing and completion of homework. I am so grateful to all of you. Thank you. We will remember you always.”
