  • Everything We Want to Know About Mathematics

    Funded Feb 14, 2010

Thank you so much for funding our Real World mathematics project. Through this project, students were able to relate some of what we learned in class to activities outside of the classroom. More interesting, I think for the students, was for them to read the books themselves to discover interesting things about mathematics that they may not have already known. For example, one activity which made a big impression on my Algebra I students was about the bar codes that are used for scanning items in the grocery stores, department stores, etc.. To know that each number has a purpose really made that "code" more interesting to the students. The project helped me, too, because as a teacher, I know how to perform mathematical operations, and I know how to teach these mathematical operations, but I don't always know how these processes are used in the real world. I was able to refer to these books to be able to bring some interesting aspects of mathematics to my students.”

  • Bringing German Into the 21st Century Classroom

    Funded Mar 17, 2010

Thanks so much for your generous donation. The kids and I use the new projector every single day and it brings our classes to life. We are able to see Germany and German culture in up-to-date ways that aren't possible without technology. I am able to assign many more interactive assignments and let the kids do the work to show what they are able to do instead of me lecturing all the time. Your donation has made a great improvement in our classroom environment and will do so for years to come. Danke!!”

    With gratitude,

  • Building, Making and Reading Words!

    Funded Feb 22, 2010

Firstly, thank you for your generous donation to my classroom. Since I wrote the proposal in the early fall of 2009, requesting the materials for my classroom, I have seen enormous growth in my students' ability to read and write. Your timely donation came at the exact point in the year when my students were ready to begin to take the knowledge of alphabetic principles and basic phonemic awareness from the first half of the year, and apply it to their work as independent readers and writers. It has been a pure delight for me to be a part of my students' progress and see how they've become engaged and enthused readers.

Your donation has incited a new, emboldened passion for literacy in my students. As I look around my classroom now I see several students playing a phonics game using laminated picture and word cards that I was able to print out in color and laminate thanks to the donated laminator and printer I received. I see students using the brightly colored pockets charts (also donated by you) to sort other laminated word cards into word families. I, myself, use the extra-large pocket chart to teach print concepts to my struggling readers, allowing them to put together sentences using word cards in a large chart in front of them. My students are now organized readers and writers and are using the color-coded cardboard folders (also donated by you) to file and keep track of their materials. In addition, I find myself using the wipe-off sentence strips (another part of your generous donation) on a daily basis, as I create activities for my students to manipulate words and letters to make sentences.

Through your heartfelt donation, my students are becoming the readers and writers I knew they would be and I can not begin to tell you how much your kindness is appreciated. Thank you for thinking of me, my current and future students and funding this project. ”

  • King of Pop Art: Andy Warhol

    Funded Feb 9, 2010

I cannot thank you enough for the generous and kind donations that have made my project, Andy Warhol: The King of Pop Art, possible. The smiles I saw, and ohs and ahs I heard when the children opened their crayon containers, and realized they had new crayons was great. I wish you could have been here to witness it. Each child got a 64 color set of Crayola crayons. Previously, we only had 24 colors for each child.

The students enjoyed learning about Andy Warhol's life and art. They really loved his use of color and enjoyed using wild, funky colors to draw their self-portraits. They really enjoyed creating their own "celebrity" style self-portraits.

I hope you continue to be a patron for Donors Choose. With so many budget cuts in education in our state, they are cutting supply budgets, and worse, art education jobs. Educators in the arts will need your assistance even more. Again, my sincerest appreciation for your donation.

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Allen

  • Wii Music

    Funded Feb 26, 2010

Thank you so much for your thoughtful and generous donation to this project. Some of the equipment is still on back-order, so my students are anxiously awaiting it's arrival. This WII gaming system will give my students a chance to be creative and have some fun in music class. The WII music game will reinforce many of the music concepts we learn in class. Many of my students have never played the WII before and are so appreciative of the opportunity to learn how it works. They really couldn't believe that people would donate so much money for them to have something to use in school. It was a great conversation about how people help each other out. So, thank you for allowing me the opportunity to share that lesson with them. Thank you again for being so generous!”

  • Please Help A First Year Teacher - Help His Students!

    Funded Mar 10, 2010

Thank you so very much- your donations mean the world to me. In a time when financial support is so hard to come by, I've had to buy countless supplies out of my own budget. With your help, I am now able to provide more opportunities for my students to learn through writing with less limitation. Before these resources, my students were only allowed to have their 'writing center' at their own desks and were often asked to use dry erase boards instead so that we could preserve writing paper and supplies. Also, the students are always reading in class and I try to foster as much love for reading as possible; but often, the students' comprehension skills are low because we only 'analyze' books as a whole group.

With these resources- my students will be so happy to be able to create great writing and be able to take it home with them instead of erasing it off their boards or recycling from other papers! The reading book logs are going to be SO great- the students can easily reflect on their reading and record the main idea, characters, setting and etc. without their teacher having to ask them!! All of these resources are going to be put to such great use and it is going to allow more time for instruction- instead of sorting and managing supplies.

Thank You again and may you be blessed as well!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Sutherland

  • Lend Me a Tenor.....Sax!

    Funded Feb 19, 2010

Our wonderful new tenor saxophone arrived today! You should have seen the excitement on the faces of my students. They know the importance of a balanced sound in the band and how this instrument will help to even out our sound. Thank you so much for supporting this project. This instrument would have never been able to fit into our school budget. My students and I are so grateful for your generosity. This instrument will be able to balance out our band for many years to come. Thank you again for your support and for giving us the gift of music.”

  • Aspiring Clarinet Player Needs Instrument

    Funded Feb 9, 2010

This is a wonderful day! The new clarinet arrived at my school today. I cannot wait to tell one of my students that they will now be able to learn how to play the clarinet. They are going to be thrilled! I have a list of students who have expressed an interest in playing in the band. Unfortunately my list of students is longer than the list of instruments in my inventory. However, today my inventory list got a little longer. This clarinet is a wonderful gift to my students and my band program. Thank you for giving my students the opportunity to learn and play music. Thank you for being so kind and generous to my students. We certainly appreciate it!”
