  • Help Us Complete Our Set of BONE Graphic Novels!

    Funded Jul 4, 2012

Thank you all for your generous donations!!! With your help I've been able to complete our classroom set of the BONE graphic novels by Jeff Smith. This popular book set is available in our school library, but they are always checked out so it's hard for my class to check them out and read the entire series.

Now that we have our own set in our classroom I've had many students read this entire book series and enjoy it. Since we now have hardcover copies these books also last! I've gone through at least three copies of the paperback set and as the books get destroyed from heavy reading the set ends up missing parts until the books can be replaced.

Thanks again for helping us to get a complete set of these books into our classroom. Many readers, especially struggling readers, love graphic novels and these books have been a hit this year in Room 6 and will continue to be read for many years to come!”

    With gratitude,

    Teacher

  • Goo-Goo for Graphic Novels at Emperor

    Funded May 9, 2012

I can't thank you enough for the Graphic Novels. The students come in at recess and just sit or stand in front of the display and read for 20 minutes. They are gaining valuable knowledge from the non fiction titles and reading for pleasure with the Fiction titles. The bold graphics entice them and draw them in. It is so much fun watching almost every student select one as their free choice book to check out, every day!! Because of your support and DonorsChoose.com our graphic novel collection has grown from 0 to 75 books.”

  • Grab a Graphic: Novel That Is!

    Funded Jun 2, 2012

I'd like to thank you on behalf of my entire school for making it possible for us to add new graphic novels to our media collection. I am starting my second year at this school and learned from my last school how important graphic novels can be, especially to a reluctant reader. Through your generosity, we were able to purchase graphic novel fairy tales, sports books, books for girls, and non-fiction titles. We now have a variety of subjects that appeal to all of our students.

My new school has a much smaller budget which makes ordering books more difficult. I must be sure to cover all areas of the curriculum while also paying attention to student requests and best sellers. It can be a juggling act at times. With your donations, we have added much needed and often requested new titles to our collection. From the moment the boxes arrived the kids were ready to dig in and start reading. Every one of our new books stays checked out at all times.

Even our teachers are using the new books. We were in need of more fairy tales and with your help we now have several new graphic novel fairy tales. Our entire third grade has been using these new books as they have studied fairy tales and fractured fairy tales. The students have even written their own fractured fairy tales as alternatives to the stories. The images in these books draw their interest and the style of writing in the graphic novels keeps the reader engaged. We are so thankful those books arrived in time to help the third graders. And we are so grateful to have all of the new books in our collection. It has created so much excitement and as a librarian and educator, I strive to get the students excited about reading. Thank you for helping our students become better readers!”

  • Getting Graphic at the Library

    Funded Mar 12, 2012

Thank you so much for your support for our Graphic Novel collection. The students are really enjoying them. The books come and go so fast they hardly have time to get reshelved!

We were able to get a variety of titles and all of them seem popular, but the students are very excited about the Sherlock Holmes titles we were able to purchase. Perhaps it is because of the recent resurgence of popularity of the Sherlock Holmes canon, with the television shows and movies? Whatever it is, we are encouraged to see the students breeze through these graphic novels and move on to the original titles we have in our collection.

Thanks again for your support - it means so much to the students!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Willis

  • Grabbing Students with Graphic Novels

    Funded Mar 19, 2012

I know it may seem like ages ago since you made your donation to our classroom! The graphic novel books were ordered and arrived! On behalf of all 82 freshmen, thank you! The books arrived in small shipments of one or two books. Each day a book arrived, I asked a student to do us the honors of opening the box of books. I taught the students to use Amazon in order to get a quick summary of the book, so during silent reading time one student would research the book then report back to the class. I must tell you, it is quite amazing to see high school students get excited over books. Your donations brought a lot of excitement to our room this year. Please know that we appreciated your support!”

  • Graphic Novels for Great Readers!

    Funded Feb 13, 2012

I can't tell you how exciting it is to look at my graphic novel shelf now. Before this project was funded, it was pretty sad looking. There were fewer than five books on it at any given time. All of the others were constantly checked out, so a student looking for a graphic novel would have very few books to choose from.

This project has more than doubled my graphic novel collection. Now, all of the students who want graphic novels can find them--and actually have real choice, instead of taking whatever is left on the shelf. In addition, this project has given me graphic novels at lower reading levels, so now my first graders can enjoy this section just as much as my fifth graders can.

And finally, this project has given me the ability to say "Yes!" when my students come to me with the question "Do you have...". I was able to fill lots of student requests with this project, and that makes my library a more welcoming place for my students.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Your contributions to this project have made a real impact on my students and on my library, and I am incredibly grateful to you for that.”

  • "Persepolis" in the Classroom

    Funded Mar 27, 2012

It is always important that children have books. All students benefit from classroom and school libraries, but sometimes that isn't enough. In a classroom with students on a variety of reading levels, it is crucial that the materials my students are reading are accessible to everyone. That is why Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood was such a valuable resource in my classroom this year. Students of all reading levels were able to comprehend the story of a young girl growing up in the Iranian revolution because the story is written in the form of a graphic novel. Graphic novels also boost engagement and students were extremely excited to read a new genre.

In addition to the format of the novel, students were also exposed to new global perspectives. Learning about the revolution in Iran offers a rich jumping-off point; my classes were able to discuss a new culture, as well as current events in the region. Persepolis truly broadened student perspectives, and I'm grateful that we were able use this book. Thank you again. ”

  • Engage High School English Students With Graphic Novels!

    Funded Feb 16, 2012

This is just a small token of my

gratitude for your generous donation to my English classroom. The graphic

novels have arrived and have already made a impressive impact on my

    students. My six English classes

just completed a graphic novel unit, where we read Persepolis and Maus,

both memoirs about people's resiliency and hope during wartime. The students love the books and delight

at the chance to read "comic books" for English class. These books helped to teach our

students about difficult topics, like the Holocaust and life for women during

    the Iranian Revolution. They were

particularly helpful for my English Learners, who benefit from having images

paired with text, so that they could better understand the stories.

Because of serious cuts to our

school budget, generous donations like yours help to provide motivational and

educational reading materials for our students. These books will be used for

years to come within our school. You have already made a significant and

lasting impact impact on over 150 students and many more to come. Thank you for your donation, for

investing in literacy in our schools. I cannot thank you enough for your

    generosity.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Nittle

  • More Graphic Novels Please!

    Funded Mar 31, 2012

Thank you all for these terrific graphic novels. You would never have imagined that 7th graders would be SO EXCITED to read! You have all opened up a world of doors for my students.

My kids always enjoyed reading, but with these graphic novels, their love has been elevated to a totally new level. Since the pictures in the graphic novels assist with student comprehension, I now have dozens of 7th graders reading AND understanding Shakespeare! That is an amazing accomplishment!

Once again thank you for your thoughtfulness and generosity. I hope the photos of my students are able to communicate the joy and gratitude that they expressed to me when I unveiled their new books.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Rosenzweig

  • Spark A Love Of Learning In Me Through Books

    Funded Feb 14, 2012

Thank you so much for your generous donation of books for our classroom library. Because of your gift, my students will now have different types of books to read that grab their interest. They will be able to experience reading in a whole new way. Through the classroom library, my students will learn new words, discover new information and understand new concepts. Year after year my students will use these books to explore their world and expand their minds.

The books will be used for read-aloud, partner reading, small groups, independent reading and classroom book presentations. Students will continue learning vital skills such as cause and effect, main idea, summary and vocabulary through books. ”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Gutierrez
