  • STEAMing to Help Teachers

    Funded Nov 20, 2015

I love looking a the list of amazing people who donated to the Steaming to Help Teaches project. Your generosity stretches well beyond my classroom through this project. Thank you so very much for helping to fund this project. For the past 11 years, I have been working with students in my county to create quilts to raise money to bring new books to teachers who have lost their classrooms to natural disasters. I began this project with a co-teacher just after Hurricane Katrina ravished the Gulf Coast region including Mississippi and Louisiana. Since then, we have brought loads of books to many teachers in need. By funding this project, you have provided my students with an two iPads and two Osmos to help my students create their art work to make their squares. In addition, these items are helping my students create an informational book concerning weather patterns. This project will not only have a positive impact on my students, but all the students in our school wishing to participate in the project, and all the students in the classrooms of the teachers we will be able to bring books to. This is the project that keeps on giving. A huge special thank you to EMP Museum + Paul G.Allen Family Foundation for the matching funds.”

    Mrs. Kellyann Goring

  • Financial Literacy for Money Managing Students

    Funded May 7, 2014

My students were excited when they walked into the classroom and saw the Apple computer and teaching cart. They were full of questions about the resources. I explained to them that they will be visiting virtual museums, selecting inspiration artwork and creating a piece of art. One student commented, "Yes!" Another student said, "How are we going to do that?" As my students sat on the carpet, they discussed the artwork in great detail. They used post it notes to pose questions and make comments. They were fascinated by the different artwork designs and style. When they went to lunch, they shared our project with other 5th grade students. They were definitely excited about the resources and activity.

My students and I are used the resources on a daily basis. I noticed the artwork we discussed really sparked an interest in 17th century artwork. The inspiration art promoted higher order thinking and problem solving skills. My students were engaged in very area. They took their time and drew outline, selected complimentary colors, and shared their thinking. I facilitated and observed learning in actions. The teaching cart was instrumental in setting the purpose, holding resources, and tracking progress. I used the teaching cart as a conference station and central supply area. The students and I met at the cart to address students' concerns, ask clarifying questions, and to discuss progress.

This project has boosted my students love for art because they spent valuable time collaborating, examining, and creating meaningful artwork. My students grew confidence discussing tone, texture, and design in a piece of artwork. This funded project motivated my students to be innovative and active learners. It prompted me to incorporated more hands-on activities that require collaboration and exploration. Thank you again for supporting learners by funding this project.”

  • Money Doesn't Grow on Trees - Teaching Financial Literacy

    Funded Aug 6, 2014

What a lively year we had - buying, selling, and saving our imaginary fortunes! My students loved the financial games that were provided through your generous donations.

These games not only improved their financial knowledge and math skills, but also taught them how to cooperate, share, and negotiate with each other. It taught them how to avoid being a "sore loser", and the tools required to be a good team player. The students had so much fun playing these board games that they were inspired to invent their own - leading to more ways to learn while having fun.

Once again, thank you for supporting this project.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Russell

  • Penny Penny Easily Spent Copper Brown and Worth One Cent!

    Funded Sep 23, 2014

When my students first received the materials, the look on their faces was indescribable. They thought the materials were incredibly cool, and I'll be the first to say that they were not alone in that train of thinking. They were so excited to get their hands on the new materials and get to learning. It was apparent that they were ready to continue their journey to financial literacy.

The students had been learning about the materials through play money I had created along with other resources such as books, videos, and handouts. Now, they have good-looking, engaging, and meaning materials and resources to work with. I have been incorporating these materials, such as the giant money magnets and the book, into whole group instruction. The materials such as the Coin-U-Lator and cards, money briefcase, and board game makes the perfect addition to math stations. It makes planning more exciting for me and lessons and practice more engaging for my students.

This project boosted my teaching by giving me fresh, new avenues of teaching this content area. I know without question that because of these materials that I was able to give meaningful, authentic lessons and practice for them. My firsties can now communicate about money and understand the purpose and value of it. Thank you for helping me make this unit more hands on.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Jackson

  • Financial Literacy: How is Money Used?

    Funded Oct 15, 2014

Thank you for the supplies. Having enough poster paper for multiple sessions, made sure each student was able to participate in documenting ideas. The students really enjoyed working in their small groups with the scented markers, which they did not have to take turns to use.

We completed several Financial Literacy lessons. My students were able to clear up misconceptions about banking. Students learned the money in the bank is based in a person's income. They were able to have group discussions to learn about sources of income for adults and children. They also learned about expenses and identity theft.

We then learned about taxes. Many students knew that taxes are paid when making purchases, but did not know why. They were able to brainstorm, and identify, many ways the city, state, and federal governments use the funds to benefit the community.

With Earth Day approaching, we are beginning our lessons on recycling and learning about waste reduction. We will be are making paper from recycled material.

Financial literacy is one skill my students desperately needed, and your support made it happen.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Taylor

  • Financial Literacy = Success For My Future Entrepreneurs

    Funded Jun 15, 2014

Thank you for thinking of my young charges. They had a wonderful experience utilizing the resources that you funded. We just finished a unit on innovative entrepreneurs and the books were wonderful sources of information. The students are particularly engaged when we have new materials to work with.

It warms my heart when I see my students with these exciting resources and the joy on their faces. Our next unit entails writing term papers and once again your resources will be used. Just know that you've made a difference in many students lives. We all appreciate your efforts.”
