Pranav Saha's Sweet Stache of 2010

Part of: Baltimore Growers
  • $2,080raised
  • 28projects funded
  • 21schools served
  • 27teachers supported
Hello friends! It's Baltimore's 3rd Year of Growing mustaches for local kids! We made a serious positive impact on the local school system in 2008 and 2009, but this year, the goal is to have the words "education" and "mustache" become synonymous with each other. Please donate to my mustache, or to any of the other handsome men of Baltimore (unless they're ahead of me in fundraising). It's time to take the city by force, one follicle at a time!
  • 8th Grade is Going Rogue!

    Funded Dec 12, 2010

We received our books on Friday! I sent two very thrilled 8th graders to pick up the novels, That was Then, This is Now in the office. They had opened the box before they even made it upstairs! They came running into the room and started trying to hand out copies right away! I actually had to snatch the books back and lock them up, all the while they were insisting, "We can read two novels at once!"

And with the help of programs like this and people like you, they actually can. We will be starting the novels after state testing in March, so they may have our full attention. I will try to post picture of their display in my classroom... and a few eager students trying to read snippets.

Thank you again for making a difference in the education of my students. The world will be a better place for it.”

    Ms. Kuhlman

  • For the Girls Who Just Want to be Grown Up

    Funded Dec 15, 2010

Thank you all so much for generously donating these books for my middle school girls! My students are so eager to grow up and many of them are seeking out role models that they can look up to. The figures in these books, whether fictional or real, provide incredible examples for teenage girls growing up today. They wrestle with real issues, make tough decisions, and serve as excellent sources for discussion. I'm excited to use these sets of books with the different middle school female-only advisory groups. I know that we will all learn a lot!”

  • Reading Write!!

    Funded Jan 2, 2011

I would like to take this time to thank each and everyone one of you for donating the materials to our class. These materials have been utilized on a daily basis to help increase fluency, word knowledge and reading comprehension.

The students really enjoyed the partner script, the activity where students read to each other to help build fluency. As a result of this center, all of my students have made excellent progress in reading fluency. With an increase in reading fluency, their reading comprehension has increased as well.

So thank you again for thinking of my students and their needs. This opportunity has shown students the power of giving back and how they can give back in their own way as well.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Harris

  • Can You See What I See?

    Funded Dec 21, 2010

Thank you everyone! We were in desperate need of a document camera and your donations could not have come at a better time. It was a gift we weren't exactly counting on but will welcome into our room with open arms!

We are being our intervention work to prepare for high stakes testing and this camera will help us out a lot! We can now save paper and just project our work on the board to be completed in our notebooks. We appreciate it and we are sure there are some trees out there that appreciate it as well!

    Thanks again and God bless!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Vaughn

  • Transformed to Read!

    Funded Dec 4, 2010

I am so thankful for your generous donation to my classroom. The books and CDs that you donated have helped my students become better readers. The books are being used during small group instruction and for independent reading. The books have also increased the number of book reports my students have turned in and they have increased the student's reading fluency.

My students are so eager to read the books and listen to the CDs. They even want to take the books home to share their reading with their families. I am so proud of the progress my students are making.

Without donors like you, our classroom library would be empty.

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Wallace

  • Ready to Read

    Funded Nov 30, 2010

Thank you for the reading materials. My reading group made significant progress this year with the help of these supplies. Using reading trackers has helped my struggling readers focus on just one line of text at a time, and their rate and accuracy scores are improving. Students look forward to using the magnetic writing center to practice identifying parts of speech and and crafting interesting sentences. Displaying books in the book rack allows me to highlight concepts mentioned in our general reading curriculum. Students often ask to read, look at, or borrow the books showcased on the stand and share what they have learned on the topic with the rest of the class while we read. The word cards provide a useful reference, and I display 2-3 on the board at a time to support vocabulary development. Your donation has helped my students improve their reading skills and increase their vocabularies. Thank you for helping my 3rd graders become better readers!”

  • Science Inquiry!

    Funded Nov 23, 2010

Thank you very much for your donation to my science project. The students love the new science centers and are excited to use them more. Also, the video Planet Earth has hugely impacted our studies of animal habitats. The students truly enjoy watching and learning about animals in their natural environments. Most of my students have only seen or learned about wild animals in the zoo. Planet Earth gives them a different window to the world.

The various types of materials donated, which include the video; books; and games, are all very useful in engaging students in science learning. The students will soon be wrapping up animal habitats and watching the changes of the life cycle of a butterfly.

Thank you again for your donation to this project. Science learning is very important. The students and myself appreciate your support.”

  • Developing a Personal Narrative Unit

    Funded Dec 15, 2010

Thank you so very much for the class set of Dreams from My Father. Barack Obama's personal narrative brought inspiration and exemplary writing into my senior classroom.

As we read Obama's autobiography, I was pleasantly surprised by the mature discussions spurred by his words on race relations and pursuing goals. Several of my students told me that they had never had the opportunity to read an entire book in English class by an African American author, let alone by someone they knew about and looked up to. With an author whose voice was nearer to their own, I saw many students start to volunteer to read aloud in class. Hearing Obama construct his personal story helped my students to write their own stories. As they are all about to graduate high school, this was an important time in their lives to reflect on what has made them who they are.

As they learned about their president, my students also learned about their country and themselves. Words cannot express how grateful we are to you for your part in providing these materials for our classroom. Your help has made a huge difference to this class, and future students will benefit from your generosity as well.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Durkin

  • From Baby Steps to Giant Steps Into Technology

    Funded Jan 28, 2011

It is really a pleasure for a teacher like me to have generous sponsors like you who have the heart for our student's success and who believes in what we teachers hopes for and believe in. Living in this world of advance technology, it is a must that we provide additional interactive resources to accommodate students individual learning styles with the use of a computer. With our district and our school facing budget cuts, my students would never have this resource. The notebook you have donated has helped me choose interactive programs that will address my students areas of concern. My students have become more excited and motivated with our new workshop : "Fun-time With Ms. S". I have a student who has really been having difficulty retaining skills learned in class has finally started recognizing and associating letters and their sounds. With the little progress she has made, she has shown more self-confidence which gave her that boost to try and enjoy learning.

With our little effort but great appreciation we would like to give you and donors choose a big HORRAH! To all of you with tremendous dedication and support-THANK YOU!!!!!”

  • Islamic Tiling Installation: Peace Education, Math and Art!

    Funded Nov 6, 2010

WOW! Thank you so much for your generous contributions to our math and art unit. We were able to incorporate tiling, patterning, rules, counting, basic color theory, symmetry (radial and bilateral), calligraphy, and some background information on Islam! Working with a special education population can be challenging, especially when students have a low frustration level. Having these special materials made our projects special -and movable. Not only were students able to endlessly re-adjust mistakes and reposition pieces as they thought through their compositions, but they were also able to use their artwork as a giant sticker and place it anywhere they chose. I was very impressed with how much we were able to accomplish and how professional the student's work looked due to the high quality of materials you were able to provide. We never would have been able to produce so much work - and so much interest - without these special materials. It is donors like you who make exceptional learning the rule as opposed to the exception. We can't thank you enough.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Gambino
