  • Learning to Use Money; A Gift for Dad

    Funded Mar 4, 2010

My students, assistant, and I would like to thank you for supporting our classroom through your generous donations. The teaching money items you purchased have allowed us to learn how to sort and match coins.

Our class went on a field trip to McDonalds after learning how to place our own orders in class. We practiced placing our order, paying, and getting our change using the plastic and paper money you bought for us. We used order cards with pictures of what we wanted to eat to help us order and cards with pictures of money to help us give the right amount of money. The people at McDonalds were very impressed with our independence. We could never have done this without people like you caring so much for us!

With budgets getting tighter and funds being cut right and left your continued support of teachers such as myself is much needed. Just because the students are on summer vacation does not mean that teachers will stop working. Many of us, including myself, will be writing grants for items for next years classrooms. Please continue to log on to Donors Choose and support the future! ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lowder

  • Engineering Better Minds - Fun Physics

    Funded Feb 25, 2010

Thank you for donating the materials for our Fun Physics lessons. This lesson has shown the children in my classes that they all can be Engineers if they put their minds to it. It has also given me a fun way to cover physic lessons about motion with them.

During these lessons, we were able to introduce so many more things to them with the use of this equipment. Teamwork and the use of blueprints or schematics were bonus things that the students picked up. Having to work in groups to accomplish building the rollercoasters is a challenge for the students, but they are adjusting well to working in their groups and assigning jobs to each team member.

Once again, thanks. This is sure to help our Science scores and introduce them to the world of Engineering.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Vaughan

  • Using Legos to Learn About Motion, Forces, and Energy

    Funded Oct 27, 2009

Thank you for the funding opportunity to purchase multiple sets of simple machine Lego kits for my 7th grade students. The students had a blast building each simple machine and were able to make connections about how simple machines make work easier. They were able to build several examples which helped to reinforce the simple as well as complex moving parts for levers, gears, pulleys, and wheel and axles. I appreciate the opportunity to be able to share such a wonderful lesson with my students.

    Thank you again.”

    With gratitude,

  • If I Can't See It, I Can't Learn It

    Funded Sep 17, 2009

My Chemistry and Earth Science classes loved the 3D Molecular Design kits. The kits are made from durable materials and the accompanying lesson plan materials are very helpful. I am looking forward to using the manipulatives in science classes for many years to come.

Our Yearbook staff displayed a multimedia presentation today of the Fall semester highlights and the water molecule lab was in several slides. I heard many students commenting about how much they enjoyed that lab. In addition to teaching about the structure and behavior of the water molecule, the kits were also useful to highlight the particle model of matter and chemical bonds.

I especially like that the pieces are inside a cup that could hold water. During the activity, I carefully distribute the covered cups of "water" to each group, letting the students see that I am concerned about spilling any water on their notebooks and papers. I ask the students to open the cups and pour the water into a metal container. They are surprised with what they find inside each cup. The students also enjoyed working together to create one large ice crystal using all of the kits put together.

We use a lot of guided inquiry activities in science class and these manipulatives are perfect for allowing students to take responsibility for their learning.

Thanks again for your donation and for demonstrating such a strong commitment to funding public education.”

  • Space and Beyond

    Funded Oct 7, 2009

Thank you so much for your generous donations to our classroom. The students are very excited about learning how to play all the games. We have been exploring them during recess on our rainy days. I think the space ball will prove to be the favorite in the classroom.

Our school district has had to make a lot of sacrifices in order to keep jobs and schools open. Your gift to this project has allowed us to talk about generosity and how we can help others in need. I am grateful for your support and your willingness to make a difference for our children.”

  • Rocks In Our Head

    Funded Sep 30, 2009

Thank you so much for the rock collections. My Earth Science classes can now visualize what they are learning about. You have made the pictures and words in their textbooks come alive! Now not only can they read about sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks, and the rock cycle - they can hold them in their hands! The quality of the rock samples and the ancillary activities included with the collections will provide many lessons worth of inquiry learning both now and several years into the future.

Thank you again so very much.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. H.
