Funded Dec 11, 2010"
Wow, I never anticipated the popularity I would gain amongst the students from this project! Every day I get knocks at the door, "Can we use your playground toys?" So, I have definitely "Brought Playtime Back" to my school! There are far more than my fourth graders that are enjoying the fun sporting equipment. (The only person who may not be a big fan of my project is the wonderful custodian, who graciously retrieves our frisbees that end up over the fence and on the roof a few times per week! )
My absolute favorite thing that has come of this project, is that students who used to wander around by themselves that perhaps didn't have the social skills to "invite" themselves to join in other larger group activities, are now interacting with their peers more because there are small group and pairs activities like the velcro mits and frisbees that are less intimidating for socially shy students to be a part of. They are gaining the hand eye coordination that comes from games like pass, the strength and coordination that comes from shooting hoops or tossing a football, and the accelerated heartrate and accompanying endorphins from jumping ropes WHILE they are socializing, destressing, and having FUN!
One particular student of mine, that is overweight, has really started to participate in many of the active games at recess. This was quite a milestone, because as much as I have tried to get him to participate in physical activities prior to getting our equipment, he had never willingly done so. NOW, since we have our new playground equipment, he is running around, chasing the balls, shooting hoops, and always plays pass with me using the velcro mits at recess.
For all of you who supported this project, I know you can appreciate what a tremendous impact these playground "enticers" have had on my students. They are getting physical activity in, they are learning to share and take turns with the equipment, they are benefiting from the structure of organized games with rules, and they are having fun! They work so hard in the classroom for most of the day. I feel pride at having given them something to look forward to at recess, and so should you! Thank you from the bottom of our healthy hearts!" ”
With gratitude,
