  • Drop Everything And Read!!

    Funded Dec 11, 2009

Thank you for supporting our "Drop Everything And Read" project. Because of you, the Art Room now has an art book library available for students during in-class silent reading sessions. This resource greatly enhances our school-wide reading across the curriculum. We purchased several books related to many art movements throughout history; and also some drawing technique books. These selections provide a range of topics and reading levels to engage students in a love of reading. By supporting this project you have helped make it possible for my art students to establish a lifelong enjoyment of reading and learning within the visual arts. Your support and encouragement of visual arts education helps validate students' varied interests and talents.

    Thank you again. ”

  • Racing to a Better Environment

    Funded Dec 7, 2009

Thank you so much for your generous donation to our class. We learned so much from this project. We are currently working with our school to create environmentally friendly policies that will encourage teachers, students, and parents to conserve and recycle.

The solar cars were such a great start for us. The students loved learning about solar energy and its applications. They visited a local solar advocacy organization and then investigated how NYC is already tapping into this energy source.

Thank you again and we all wish you a wonderful summer.”

  • Empty Bookshelves in the City!

    Funded Nov 24, 2009

Thank you so much for the materials that you donated to our school. The students now have some really great reading materials. The SAT books that you donated are very popular. The students find them great to use to prepare for the SAT.

Our classroom library now has many titles that the students enjoy. They really like the Twilight series that was donated and The Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Our bookshelves now have some really great titles that the students want to read.

We would really like to thank you for your kind generosity and for caring about literacy and our students.”

  • Stories of the Orchestra

    Funded Dec 9, 2009

Thank you for your generous support of my classroom and my students! We used the materials you donated towards to learn about the instruments of the orchestra, how they are made, and how to identify them based on appearance and sound. My students absolutely love playing instrument bingo and they get quite competitive about making sure they learn every single instrument's timbre and characteristic sound in order to maximize their chances of winning.

Our school and student's families don't have the funds to purchase or rent instruments, so learning through high quality materials (books, pictures, DVDs, CDs) is the next best possible way for them to experience instrumental music.

Thanks again for your support and please consider continuing to support arts education in the future!”

  • So You Think We Should Be Able to Dance!!!!

    Funded Nov 20, 2009

Thank you so much again for your donations! Because of your generosity, I was able to start a very rewarding after-school program for 2nd and 3rd graders in my school. My students love being able to see and correct themselves in the mirrors. As dancers, I've seen them grow so much in such a short time.

More importantly, though, I've watched them grow as students and as people. They are actually excited to stay in school longer! In the second week of the program, one of my students had been absent for the regular school day, but showed up at 3:40pm to dance. After making it clear that she couldn't do that anymore and stay in the program, she hasn't missed another day of school. Some of my other students, known to be difficult in terms of behavior in their classrooms, are coming to dance class with a level of seriousness and intensity that I often don't even see in adult classes.

Every time they look at themselves in the mirrors, I can see them work a little bit harder, stand a little bit straighter, and hold their heads a little bit higher. Your donations have made it possible for them to see themselves the way I do, and I can't thank you enough for that.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. G.

  • The Spotlight Project: Putting Our Kids Center Stage!

    Funded Dec 12, 2009

Words cannot express the impact the new performance stage has made in my classroom. A student walked into the classroom and said, "Is that staying in here?". I smiled and said yes, it's ours.

Teaching theatre is a constant struggle - a struggle to fight for the arts in education, a struggle to fight for arts funding, a struggle to make theatre matter in a community where digital media and instant-entertainment have the upper hand. Every time a student steps into my classroom I want to teach them that process matters, that storytelling and theatre matter. Having the stage in the classroom has shown my students that what we are studying is immediate and that what we do, who we are and who we are becoming deserves a stage.

Because of our new stage we no longer have to go outside of the classroom in search of an "authentic theatrical experience," it is right in the classroom. Everyday is a performance! In a school that is home to three other schools, all of which have to share the same stage, we were forced to talk about performing in the abstract - like discussing dinner. With our new stage, we dine daily on the richness that theatre performance has to offer.

We were able to perform student scenes this winter on an actual stage. This added levels to there performances and gave them the feeling that what we were doing mattered. Many students commented on how it felt like they were, "...really performing."

Thank you for giving me moments like this and the million more to come.

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Rothwell

  • More Books Please! Because We Love Reading!

    Funded Dec 7, 2009

Thank you so much for your generous donation to our classroom library. My students were absolutely thrilled to receive these new and updated books. They are eagerly reading the new books, finding that our collection is now up-to-date with current and interesting adolescent literature.

Your contribution has helped to increase the quantity and quality of books in our classroom library, engaging students in reading and helping to sustain a high interest in reading. Students are thrilled to read the new books and are excited as the prospect of reading not only in class but also at home.

Thank you again for your contribution to my project. By donating to this project, you are helping my students to access relevant literature and engage in reading, assisting them to develop the skills necessary to become better readers and succeed in both high school and college.”

  • All Creatures Great and Small: Creating a Model Herpitarium

    Funded Jan 7, 2010

Thank you all so much for your generous donation to "All Creatures Great and Small". I hope you can see in the faces of our students the joy they had working with the materials you provided.

By the time our materials arrived our students had done research on-line and in our media center. They had learned about egg-laying reptiles and and amphibians, the animals habitats and taken a trip to our local zoo!

Students had recorded in their sketchbooks textures and patterns of the animals they'd viewed first-hand at the zoo and in our art classroom. With this brain food in mind, we set out to make our own herpitarium inhabitants!

This opportunity gave our kids an authentic, hands-on experience that brought their knowledge of the physical structure and habitats of herpitarium "creatures great and small" full circle!

Again, thank you for your donation! You've provided us with the means by which to create a meaningful learning experience for all of our students.”

  • Spring Mill Memory Mosaic

    Funded Jan 7, 2010

It's hard to express in words the joy and pride our students had in preparing our school's 50th Anniversary mosaic. The art supplies your generosity provided for us allows our kids to look at their artwork everyday as they pass it in the hallway.

The mosaic is a constant reminder that hundreds of students from 27 various national origins came together to create a beautiful work of art that symbolizes teamwork, positive attitudes and the love of learning!

We hope that the excitement and pride that shines in our students' faces comes through in their photographs to say, "Thank you for caring about us!" With your help we have a wonderful reminder of what a "learning family" can do together!”

  • Traveling to Washington D.C. to Inspire the Class of 2019

    Funded Nov 16, 2009

We just got back from Washington D.C. last night around 8pm. All I have to say is ---THANK YOU! We are very thankful for your generous donation to the 7th grade trip. Thanks to you, no child in the class will missed this opportunity. I have been teaching long enough to know what the kids remember, what makes that impact on a child's life. While I would like to say it is each and every one of my lessons, I know that special learning experiences like an overnight trip to Washington D.C. are the ones that stay with a person for a lifetime. I still remember many of the facets of my personal trip to Washington and I hope many years from now our students do as well.

These are difficult economic times. I am mindful of that when I express all of our extreme gratitude for your donation. This trip was a large and expensive undertaking, one worthy of the cost, it would have been awful to have to scale down the learning experiences due to a lack of funds. I knew that the great people who support Donorschoose.org projects would come through and here you all are!

To everyone who gave, from the bottom of my heart - THANK YOU. This is a wonderful class and because of your generous donation they experienced Washington D.C. to the fullest.

We are already in the planning phases for next year. I hope that when the time arises you are able to continue to support us. Again, thanks.

    Thank you”
