Welcome to my Giving Page! Please support my efforts in Science Bloggers for Students challenge, a friendly month-long competition (10/10/10 through 11/9/10) between science blogs to see which can do the most to help low-income classrooms on DonorsChoose.org. Pick a classroom project from the list to support. And let’s beat the other bloggers! (By the way, DonorsChoose.org is a 501(c)3 charity. • Science Olympiad

    Funded Oct 23, 2010

This is my 4th year leading a Science Olympiad team. I have never been so excited or seen the students work so hard and be so dedicated. The books, building materials and study aids/materials were cracked open the very first day we met. Having these materials had the effect I had hoped for, the students had quality resources for their competition right away; and so they didn't languish or feel unguided not knowing where to start.

The students are having a much better experience this year and we've been able to retain most of the students that came to the first meeting. Our competition is April 9th 2011 and it's going to be a great day for Tolman High School because of your giving. Thank you so much for your generosity and quick action for our project. The resources you have helped to provide have made the difference for us this year.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Anderson

  • The More We Read, the Smarter We Grow!

    Funded Oct 18, 2010

We cannot thank you enough for your generosity. The scholars have devoured the books you provided, and as a result, they are becoming better readers. For example, there is B. B. came to our school last year as an English language learner. He struggled with decoding. This week, B. met our reading level goal for the end of the year – a trimester early! B now reads and comprehends at a middle-of-second grade level, putting him in a trajectory to attend a college of his choice. B. couldn't have done it without engaging books to read like those you provided.

    B. is just one example of a class full of students who have greatly benefited from your gift. There is Q., M., A. and K, all scholars who were behind earlier this year, but after effective reading practice using the books your provided, are now back on track for meeting the end-of-year goal. There is E., who used to dislike reading, but now, cannot get enough non-fiction books and is steadily catching up. There is H. and A., who have always been ahead of the pack and now have books to help them grow even further, to push their enrichment.

From B., Q., M., A., K., E., H., A., and the rest of our scholars, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for helping us become better readers so that we can be on a path to college!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Katz

  • Elmo to the Rescue

    Funded Dec 27, 2010

On behalf of myself and my students, I want to thank you so much for your generous donation of the Elmo to my classroom. It has made such a difference!

When I am teaching I can instantly show students materials to enhance their learning, rather than having to pass them around or hold them up in front of the class. I can share a map, an illustration, text or science materials for the whole class to see and discuss. It has been especially exciting and helpful for my students in math and science. With the Elmo zoom, I project magnified images of the plants and animals we are studying. Another important advantage is that students can share their work for the entire class to see. What an incredible learning experience this can be!

Best of all, the Elmo you donated has made my students more excited about learning! They are all engaged when I'm using the Elmo and can't wait to share their work. My students have so little and deserve so much. Thank you for your generosity! Your gift has already had such a tremendous impact and it's only been a few months.

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Pariseau

  • Help Us - We Are Technology Deprived!

    Funded Dec 6, 2010

The students and I would like to sincerely thank all of the donors for their help in funding our project. We have received the computer and have been using it to access the Internet for our solar System unit. We have found tons of resources to broaden our understanding of the solar system. We have also been using the Powerpoint program to create a presentation on bullying. We have been studying what bullying is, who bullies, why they bully and how we can stop it in our school. The class has decided to take what they have learned and bring it to the other grades in our school through technology.

Having the computer has really turned some of my non-participators into enthusiastic learners. It has allowed us to delve deeper into concepts that we are studying in science and math. I also hope to use it to access information and track teams running in the Iditarod races this year with my reading group. They are currently learning about the sled dog teams and the race. Thank you again for supporting my class.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Moran

  • Organized For A Great School Year: Part 2!

    Funded Nov 24, 2010

Thank you once again for this INCREDIBLE gift of notebooks! It is so hard to put into words exactly how strong of an impact this gift is already making!!!! The other day our beautiful notebooks arrived and we are ALREADY putting them to use! My children were storing a lot of their materials in folders which can be both messy and very easily ripped. Now, we have safely secured all materials in our beautiful new notebooks! Notebooks are so expensive to buy and to get them because of your generosity is SO heartwarming to us! We truly thank you!!!! This gift, as simple as it sounds, will have the greatest impact on my classroom this year. You are AMAZING to do this for us!!!!!!”

    With gratitude,

  • Give Every Student a Voice

    Funded Jan 6, 2011

I would like to thank you all for your generous support of me and my scholars. The addition of these graphing white boards to our classroom's math resources will greatly reduce the amount of learning time we lose using plain graph paper. Additionally, the white boards will be great tools for our class during guided practice when I have scholars hold up their responses, so I can quickly see them from the front of the classroom. The minimization of lost academic time and increased scholar engagement that the white boards will bring to my classroom will see immediate results in their academic performance.”

    With gratitude,

  • Project Pre-K Success II

    Funded Nov 12, 2010

Thank you so much for the beautiful mathematics manipulatives and materials. The kids were so excited when they saw the sorting trays and the rainbow bear counters sitting on the math center table that I had to set a timer for the kids to take turns playing! The trays really visually reinforce what a pattern looks like; some of the kids are even trying to challenge their peers by making up their own patterns.

Connecting a number to a quantity is difficult for my students, especially those who are non-verbal. With these materials, these non-verbal students are able to show me what they know by matching a number card to the corresponding quantity picture. The button matching materials challenge those who can sort by one criteria to go ahead and try to rearrange the materials by another criteria.

Thank you so much for funding this project. Math can be intimidating but with the right materials even challenging concepts can become clear with time and lots of practice. The students are excited to continue their mathematics journey and these items will support them on their way adding a little color and lots of fun.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Ciarcia-Haase
