Artistic Endeavors
Funded Oct 22, 2009Thank you so much for funding my project. The students have already used the paint and the display art board. We started out painting the Indian artwork that each student created. One student paper mached a balloon with newspaper and then painted it black and yellow. When he finished he had a beautiful Indian mask that looked like a bird. He was so proud of it that we decided to display the mask in the library. Another student created a paper Mache shield. You can see his project in one of the pictures that I submitted. It is the round colorful one. The other two students in my class made Indian style bowls. They used balloons covered with newspaper. When the project dried, we painted them bright colors. They were all extremely proud of their work.
This all might seem a little simple to some people, but the students at one of my schools are considered a low socio-economic group. A few of them exhibit the culture of poverty. This is not always a negative thing. They always seem to appreciate the extras. What might seem common in some areas of the country is exciting to others. Being able to give my students exposure to art activities, gives me great satisfaction.
Yesterday, my students and I used the paint that your funds bought to paint the backdrop for a nativity scene in a readers theater play. At first they were hesitant about painting. They tried to say they didn't know what to do, but after a few strokes of the brush, they looked like pros. One student decided that he had figured out an easy way to make cardboard look like wood. His art is special to me because he seemed to be inspired by the activity. It wasn't just another opportunity to paint; it was an extraordinary opportunity for him.
I just want you to know that you have helped my students broaden their future horizons.
Thank you so much,

With gratitude,
