  • Write, Right, or Rite: Help us Write On!

    Funded Mar 4, 2011

Thank You! Thank You! Thank you so very much!

My students were so excited to receive the new materials. They literally begged to go to the writing center and write throughout the day. My students loved all of the materials and were so excited about writing. My students even played "school" and used the dry eraser markers and index cards to review their spelling words. I even had to create a new math journal for them because they wanted to write during math time.

By contributing to this project Write, Right, or Rite: Help us Write on! You helped my students in so many ways. My students were more excited about writing than they have ever been before. It's as though they went through a creative rite of passage that enhanced their writing skills, social development, and overall academic development. My students are reading more, thinking more, and just excited about their education more. And I am beyond enthusiastic about their success and future successes.

To help celebrate their success we had an Authors' Party. The students had their stories published (typed, printed, bound, and laminated into individual little books for them.) My students shared the stories they wrote with parents, my district literacy leaders, chairman of our Board of Education, principal, and more. We even had a local author, Kelly Starling-Lyons, that came and spoke about her passion for reading and writing. This was a huge and successful event for my students and I'm proud to say that your donation played a significant part in its implementation.

Again thank you so much because without donors like you and Donor's Choose my students would go without. Words just cannot express how appreciative I am for your generous donations. Thank you for believing in this project and my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Altman

  • Listen, Learn, and Love Literature

    Funded Mar 15, 2011

Through the generous donations you have made my classroom has been greatly impacted. We are enjoying the benefits of the materials given. My students have never been so excited about reading before!

We set up a check out system to use the technology and books. As soon as the materials come in they are begging to check them out again. My students have been able to discuss age appropriate books where before they were too difficult. One student who has already taken his end of the year standardized test passed the reading portion and he has never passed his reading test before!

Thank you so very much for giving these students and students in years to come the resources to help accomplish their reading goals.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Gravatte

  • Understanding the Men and Women Who Fight For Us

    Funded Mar 5, 2011

I cannot tell you the impact that your donation has had on my individual students. Myers is a great storyteller and he described the War in Iraq with a detail and realism that really draws the reader in. His characters are always people that students can relate to and Sunrise Over Fallujah was no exception.

We have been able to have lessons about terrorism and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Things that, as young adults, they should be prepared to discuss and be a part of.”

  • Tigers: Prowling through Picture Books

    Funded Mar 6, 2011

What wonderful timing! Our tiger picture books began arriving just as we embarked on an intensive genre study, with students learning to distinguish folklore from fiction and fiction from informational texts of all kinds. The collection of tiger fiction books, which you helped fund, provided us with many fine examples of fable, realistic fiction, and fantasy. We're having a great time using our tiger book collection to prepare for standardized tests.

Your gift is helping kids learn about the world around them as they develop stronger academic skills. Thank you so much for choosing to support my students.”

  • Three Fat Bookcases: Space Savers

    Funded Mar 10, 2011

Whew! I just finished putting together the three new bookcases and wanted to take pictures immediately to show how great they look in our classroom! I included a photograph of the unused space before the bookcases arrived; you will be able to see how much these three short bookcases brighten up our classroom.

A new collection of books about tigers has begun arriving this week. We've tucked these new books into a place of honor, right in the middle of the three new bookcases. There was much discussion among students about just which books deserve to be housed in this fine new furniture. Clearly, the discussion will continue next week!

Thank you so much for supporting this project. Reading is important in our classroom. Your gift made possible a better storage and organization system for books in our room. We appreciate your generosity.”

  • Tigers: Saving the Striped Stalker

    Funded Mar 4, 2011

A bunch of the tiger books have arrived, with a few more showing up at our door each day. What excitement! Tigers are such powerful and magnificent creatures; they are just the ticket to get middle school students reading.

We've been reading about man-eating tigers and have discovered that most of them are ill, old, or injured. We've also been reading about a mangrove swamp which is the one place in the world where tigers routinely prey on humans. There are lots of theories about why these tigers routinely attack and kill people. One theory is that it is related to frustration over the tide washing away the urine with which tigers mark their territory. Another theory is that is is related to the slippery muddy ground which makes hunting more agile prey a challenge for tigers. It has been a lot of fun exploring all these possible explanations.

Thank you so much for making all this talking, thinking, reading, and learning possible. Your gift has brought new opportunities to a great group of kids!”

  • Tigers: Predators at Risk

    Funded Mar 3, 2011

The tiger books have begun to arrive! We are diving into this book collection in search of sophisticated new words to use in poetry, and already students have begun to learn interesting facts about the endangered striped predator. Did you know that tigers love to swim? Or that a tea made from ground tiger whiskers is thought to be a cure for laziness?

No laziness in our class! There is nothing like an exciting collection of engaging new books to keep students reading. Your generous donations have contributed to learning in a big way in our class.”

  • Fresh! Colorful Kid-Created Book Reviews

    Funded Feb 6, 2011

Thank you so much for your generous contributions to this project. The color toner replacements arrived last week. My students opened the package with great excitement and stashed the toner on a shelf with much satisfaction. Although we have not yet run out of color toner, it is most satisfying to know that when we do, we have replacement toner already waiting. Color printing will continue! Long live the visual book review!

Thank you again for supporting my students. ”
