  • Brain Boost with Balance Balls

    Funded Jun 23, 2011

Thank you very much for your thoughtful and generous contribution to my "Brain Boost" project. Initially, my project was to provide my students with a balance ball in substitution for a chair. When the balance balls arrived, they were too large for my students. Donor's Choose and the company who supplied the product went above and beyond to satisfy the needs of my classroom. Although there were not balance balls the appropriate size for my students, I was able to order Bitty Bottoms for each student in my classroom. The Bitty Bottom is a cushion that sits on the chair to provide some mobility, and cushion, which helps students stay focused. The Bitty Bottom is a safe and effective way to allow students to wiggle.

My students are very grateful for your contribution, and I have noticed a significant difference in their ability to sit in their chairs and focus on lessons. Thank you for believing in the project, and helping students in my classroom. People like you make a positive difference in this world!

    Yours truly,

    Mrs. L”

  • First Graders Can Become Authors

    Funded Oct 4, 2011

Thank you so much for supporting writing for my students! I have had the opportunity to provide my students with new writing experiences which have motivated them to become better writers. The book called Amelia's Notebook that was purchased has been an inspiration since we received the materials for all of my students. The character was similar to them and they made a connection that has transferred into their writing. The notebooks that were purchased matched Amelia's notebook she uses in the story, so this has motivated them even more.

I love hearing my students refer to the materials when they are writing independently. I have a student that reminds the class each time we write to get a "space worm" so that the spacing is easy to read. I have students using paper that supports neat handwriting while in the writing center that was provided as well as at home. Parents have also complimented us on the work that has been coming home and have purchased items that we use to be used at home.

Without you, none of this would have been possible. Not only have they begun to express themselves through writing more, they also have become stronger readers.

Thank you for believing in us and for donating to support writing education! ”

  • We "Flip" for School Counseling!

    Funded Oct 8, 2011

Thank you so much for your donation to my Donors Choose project. It is great to know that so many people care about supporting education and students! Your generosity means more than I can express in words.

Getting the Flip Camera with your donations has been a wonderful addition to the counseling program at my elementary school. In the short time since we've received the camera students have had many opportunities to utilize their creativity by making videos on many topics important to them. I've had several students who are interested in starting an anti-bullying club and plan to use the camera to have them make anti-bullying messages to show our entire 670 member student body! Another way I've been able to use the camera is when working with students learning skills such as conflict resolution and positive communication. I tape students solving a conflict in a variety of ways and then we watch the clips to get feedback and determine what is the best way to solve conflicts and most effective way to communicate with others. This has been so helpful for students and they love seeing themselves on camera!

I look forward to using the Flip Camera with small groups, in classrooms lessons and with individual students in the future. Your donation made it possible for me to creatively reach many students and allow them to shine as leaders in their school. For that I give you so many thanks!”

  • Would You? Could You Help Us, Please? Dr. Seuss Books Needed

    Funded Apr 20, 2011

First of all, I wish to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the generosity you showed as you supported our classroom'€™s project, Would You? Could You Help Us Please? Dr. Seuss Books Needed!

Your books have been read and reread countless time throughout this year. They have helped the first graders become better readers which is a gift that lasts a lifetime!

Our school believes that the home-school connect is vital to student success. Therefore, we offer literacy activities each month. Last year, in March the school chose to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday. We thought we would invite the children and their families to a Dr. Seuss birthday bash. Then, trouble began. We knew we’d have over 100 people attending the celebration. Each session has a reading portion in which the families enjoy reading together, but we did not have enough Dr. Seuss books. Our classroom libraries combined with the school library totaled only about 40 books. We contacted our area library to help us. They informed us that we could only have twenty Dr. Seuss books. It was then that the project took was born!

Thanks to your good will, love of children, and belief in the importance of literacy that the project was completed. Funding was quickly secured and last August 50 beautiful Dr. Seuss books arrived. My first graders have enjoyed these popular books since the beginning of the school year.

Next month we will host another Dr. Seuss family night birthday celebration. This time everyone will have many more books to read and enjoy as your books help support this home-school connection. Please know that your donation brought pleasure to many, many children and families. Your act of good will continue to benefit others for a very long time. The children and I thank you for that.

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Schmid

  • Creating Life-Long Readers

    Funded Aug 22, 2011

I cannot thank you enough for your donation to my classroom. I do not even think I can put into words what it felt like the first day I showed all of our new books to the students. I had the books set up on a table on SSR day for students to browse. Students had many questions about the books and were starting to grab for titles that interested them. I explained to my students where these books came from and how it was all possible because of all of you. By the end of SSR time that first day, I had students begging to check out the new books. Waiting lists were made for some of the titles including Snitch and World War Z.

With the help of our new books, our classroom library has expanded to larger than I could have ever imagined. I have also checked out over 70 books in just the first two months of school, these books being among the most popular. I even have a student almost done with one of the series we purchased - Wake, Fade, and Gone. I have witnessed students who told me they would never read continue to read long after the SSR timer has gone off, explaining that "It is an exciting part!" so they couldn't bear to put the book down. Students are recommending books to each other and making sure their friends read all the best titles so they aren't left out.

Again, I cannot thank you enough for what you have done for my students and myself. The inspiration these students have felt the last few weeks will carry on with them throughout their lives. Thank you for helping me build life-long readers.”

    Mrs. Crawford

  • Bridging the Technology Gap: Digital Learning for Life

    Funded Dec 5, 2011

Well, we are almost a month into using our new iPod, and I can't begin to put into words just how much your gift has meant to my students and me! Currently, we have downloaded over 100 apps for the students to use along with their curriculum. You have given them a new spark, a renewed energy for learning with this tool. We are working on biographies right now, and the kids have now been taught to use some great 21st Century tools to do their research, cite sources, and present their information for their peers.

I just want you to know, above all, how appreciative we are for your generosity. Now that we have successfully completed our first Donor's Choose project, we are considering trying for another one for our room. They each want to use it, so getting more for our room would be a great goal. You should also know that each of my students knows that you have given of yourselves for the betterment of their education. You should have seen the smiles on their faces when we opened it up and let them "play". You are amazing. Bless you!”

  • Picture My Success

    Funded Jun 27, 2011

I want to thank you for your generous donations to the art classroom. My students have loved using the cameras that were purchased because of your thoughtfulness. They are perfect for students to learn about camera techniques and composition. These extra cameras allow the students to have more time creating art through a photograph. They are honored that people who don't even know them would donate and therefore take great pride and responsibility in caring for the equipment.

I cannot thank you enough for your generous donations! You have each made a huge impact on my classroom, my students, and my first years of teaching. It's great to know that people care so much about our education! ”

  • Erosion Explosion

    Funded Jul 29, 2011

Thank you all for your generosity. My curriculum, Earth Science, deals with forces of nature and how it affects environments. We can now use the stream tables to see a model of how those forces reshape the landscape. Students will have exposure to how Earth is constantly changing by water, wind and drought. Having the tables allows them to set up situations that can take several years to happen in real life. Now they can model it in one class time to understand. My favorite example is showing how glaciers change the land of an area.”

  • Motivating Students To Read With Graphic Novels

    Funded Sep 28, 2011

What a difference you have made in our classroom with your donations for our graphic novels. I am so very grateful for your donations and taking the time to participate in our classroom's project. The students are so very excited to be reading the novels and their motivation to read and sustain their reading has increased dramatically.

The students are so excited to have the graphic novels in our classroom and thoroughly enjoyed our graphic novel unit (to help us better understand what graphic novels are, how to read them, and characteristics of graphic novels). They were able to work in small groups and read the novels together and compare how they are alike and different! They have also greatly enjoyed their time getting to check out the novels to read during their daily independent reading time. I have not been able to keep the novels on the shelves. They are so excited to read and are finding the joy in opening a new book and reading it. They are busy sharing with others what books they should read and their conversations have been amazing!

Thank you so much for your donations to add these FANTASTIC graphic novels to our classroom.”

  • Using Smart Pens

    Funded Jun 25, 2011

It seems like such a small token of gratitude but I want to thank you so much for your generous donation. We are using our smart pen in the classroom on a regular basis. It is great to record reading passages for those students who need some extra support. I've also used it to record content that needs to be delivered to students so we can use it during center time or when someone is out of the room and therefor missing instruction. The kids absolutely love to use the smart pen!

We currently received 100.00 dollars a year to purchase materials and supplies for our classroom. Without your generosity we would not be able to add this technology to our classroom. Thank you again for making a difference in the lives of the children who enter this classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hill
