It is with mixed emotions that I am participating in Mustaches for Kids. That's right, for the next four weeks, I will be subjecting myself to public humiliation and private doubt by growing what will no-doubt be a ridiculous looking Mustache. In order to justify this endeavor I need your support. Please sponsor my Mustache by picking a classroom project from the list below to support. And wish me and my Mustache luck. • Catching Beauty Through the Eyes of a Child

    Funded Dec 6, 2009

I once again want to express my deepest gratitude to you for donating to my project. It has been a wonderful experience watching this group of kids get excited about something new and out of the norm for them. These students have taken pictures before, but never in this context. They began to SSE the beauty in things that they had never really noticed before

These students have gain a new respect for the world around them; they are less likely to litter or allow their friends to do so. I have watch them take notice of things that they would normally take for granted. I hear them talking to their friends and they are talking about how blue the sky is or how funny a tree looks hanging over a cliff.

I thank you again for helping me see my vision come to pass and for allowing my students and myself this wonderful experience.Thank you! ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Wesley

  • The Easel Makes It Oh-So-Easy!

    Funded Dec 8, 2009

Thank you so much for your generous donation! With your help, our class now has this wonderful easel that we utilize daily. Who knew that something so simple could be enjoyed by all?

When the box first arrived, the students tried to guess what was inside (they thought it was a TV). After breaking the bad news to them, I did promise that I would open the package and assemble it so they could see the surprise in the morning. The next day, they came in and realized that the easel we were wishing for had been donated!

This easel is serves many functions in our classroom. During spelling each morning, I use magnets to hold up the sound card of the week and we brainstorm words from that sound family and I can easily write them onto the wipe board. During writing, I use the chart paper that attaches to the top hooks so that I can model brainstorming, writing, and editing. After recess, we use it to hold big books that I read aloud during reading time. When we cook, I use it to list the ingredients and discuss directions. Then at the end of the day, I use the easel to pre-teach a math lesson, when all of the students are seated on the rug. Best of all, there is a handy space underneath for storage. As you can see, the easel serves many purposes in helping me deliver my daily lessons. I cannot imagine my day without this magnificent easel.

Thank you again for your kindness and thoughtfulness. My class and I are truly grateful. I promise you that we are using this easel every day to maximize learning and success for all!”

  • Book Browsing

    Funded Jan 14, 2010

We now have had our book center for about a month. It has made a huge difference with the younger students. The center has eight bins, four on top and four on the bottom. I have put our paperback books in Spanish on the top and English on the bottom. The students now love browsing for books and always find the one they want to check out. Before we received the book center, we had all of our paperback books in little baskets. It was difficult to keep the English books separated from the Spanish books and the students were constantly asking me "Is this a Spanish or English book?"

The students would also get so frustrated as the baskets would fall over and all the books would spill out. Putting the books back would take time from their browsing, so in their hurry to get it done, the book would be put back any which way.

It now only takes me a couple of minutes to make sure the books are in their proper place with the cover facing the students. The center is long enough so that about five students at a time can browse together. I have even seen students pick out a book and recommend it to another student.

Thank you all so much for helping us obtain this piece of furniture in our library. It has made looking for books much more enjoyable and efficient for our students and at the same time, it has made tidying up and organizing the books less time consuming for me the librarian.”

    With gratitude,

  • Stimulate The Mind And Body With Soccer Balls

    Funded Nov 30, 2009

Our physical education programming has vastly improved since the day we received our soccer equipment! Student's excitement is immediately evident when I walk to class with our soccer balls in hand. Your contribution to our school day has had a immediate and continual positive impact on our student population!

On a daily basis I meet with one to three classroom groups, all of whom participate in various exercises in which we use our new equipment. We use our new set of soccer balls for partner and individual drills. We have also had tons of fun using our pennies (jerseys) for scrimmages. Students get really excited sharing the same color jerseys with fellow teammates.

In a school community that truly appreciates the game of soccer, it has been wonderful using this excitement in a way that really benefits our students. All of us at our school want to thank you all so much for your support!

  • Comfy Library Carpet Helps Young Readers

    Funded Nov 19, 2009

I am so thankful that amazing folks like you still exist in the world. You don't know how much your

donation of a colorful carpet that has 30 individual rectangles upon which the students can claim their own, means to me. As a Teacher Librarian who conducts over 30 different 21st Century Information Literacy lessons in this physical space, this special carpet has helped our students who were extremely distracted on the other old carpet that was filled with words, letters, numbers, pictures and in two languages! It was dirty and stained. It was much more appropriate for a classroom that taught those symbols every day.

As you can see from the photographs, we not only have space to sit and read our books, we also have a nice place to do our reader's theater and short plays. I have a group of girls that now come to that special carpet to do theater because they love it there so much!

The older students at our school are also able to fit in the space as well. We do more work on the carpet with our K-2 students but I've found that even our larger, older students love it as well. I can't tell you how much your generosity means to us. I want to be part of world class, high class, high standards public school education and by being part of Donor's Choose, you have chosen to be there with me. I appreciate what you have done for our Library. Five hundred or more children visit the library each week and now enjoy your beautiful carpet donation.”

  • 1st Graders Attend an Ethnic Dance Performance

    Funded Dec 16, 2009

I want to thank you greatly for your donation to my classroom. Our trip to see the dance performance, People Like Me, held so much meaning for the students in my class. My class is a diverse group of students who enjoyed seeing dance and hearing music from many of their home countries. In addition, students recognized their language being sung. My students were so engaged during the performance because it had so much relevance to their lives.

As I follow the Social Studies curriculum for 1st grade, we study characteristics of cultures and how they are alike and different. Our trip to the dance performance is a great jumping off point to discuss culture. Students already have the background knowledge that culture includes music, dance and clothing.

This field trip to see cultural expression will support my students Social Studies learning throughout the year.

I can not thank you enough for giving my students this opportunity!”

  • Tricycles for Kindergarteners!

    Funded Dec 4, 2009

Wow! I am just thrilled that our project was funded. I can just hear the shouts of joy from the 80 kindergrtners at my school. This will mean so much to them! They will be able to use the bikes everyday, and other kinder classes will be able to use them for years to come. I think the bikes we have now are 10 years old. I hope these bikes too will last a long, long time too.

Thank you for your generosity in helping out my students. You really helped to make kindergarten a lot more fun during recess at my school. You are the best! ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Deshpande
