• Music Can Be Motivating

    Funded Nov 18, 2010

Thank you for contributing to my project. Music can be very inspiring and my class loved having instruments to use in the classroom. It's shocking how the arts have been removed from most schools.

We learned how to count beats, and read notes as well as the names of different instruments. My class was excited to receive the instruments and we created routines for taking them out, cleaning, and putting them back in their place every time we use them. My students have learned to appreciate and care for the instruments.”

  • Track Spikes & Uniforms for H.S. Underprivileged Athletes

    Funded Nov 9, 2010

The Boys' Lehman High School Track &Field Team used the equipment to compete in many track meets. Relays, long distance, and field events were competed in and sometimes the athletes even won some of the events. As in any athletic arena, practice is a vital component of success. The equipment you donated allowed the members of the team to practice with proper, league approved equipment. This allowed the athletes to be familiar with all the events prior to the competitions. Some of the athletes even competed in Track & Field when they went to college due to the fact they were exposed to the access to the proper equipment you graciously donated to us. We will be forever grateful. Thank you once again in behalf of the members of the Boys' Lehman High School Track & Field team past and present.”

  • The Need to Read!!!

    Funded Dec 2, 2010

I can not tell you how much this means to us that you have opened your wallets to children in a poveished area.

First and foremost I would like to apologize for sending my thank you letter so late, I was away on maternity leave as well as not having a digital camera to fulfill the thank you packet requirements. However it is with great joy that I write this. I can not tell you how wonderful it is to have a functioning library. My students and I sit and read these books over and over again. They love being able to sit in the library area of our classroom, now that we have one, and enjoy a good book. Because of your generosity you have changed the dynamic of my classroom. My principal has been in here several occasions to witness firsthand, young children reading and laughing and sharing story books that are age and grade appropriate. The day our books arrived, it was a really bad snow storm and most of my students were absent. The six student that did show up, were more than happy to help set up the library. As they peeled back each plastic wrapping to uncover another fantastic story, their eyes lit up. I saw the joy in their faces and they couldn't stop talking about the books they would read. The next day, you could hear the gasps in the room as the children arrived. I love that my kids get so excited over literature. The library itself is so diverse, the levels range from A to J which means there are simple story books to more complex ones. With this library I am able to model and monitor their understanding of punctuation marks, reading with expression, analyzing characters, and discussing plots with them. Not to mention the setting in these books help their own writing come to life. I can not thank you; my students can no thank you enough for not only digging into your wallets but also into your hearts to fund this project. It's generous people like you who make teaching such a rewarding career choice. ”

  • Reading about Evolution is COLORful

    Funded Feb 3, 2011

Hi Donors!!! I'm sorry this letter was a million years old! We had a bit of trouble taking photos at the exhibit, since they did not allow photos inside! However, we did a few group shots outside, and then I added two classroom pictures so you can see the kids in action.

We had a great time at BODIES! It was incredible (for me, included) to see what is inside the human body. Some of the content was a bit disturbing for the kids, and I always think it is good to challenge them a bit--so thank you for giving me this opportunity! ”

  • Disney Planet Challenge "Sends It On" with Activote!

    Funded Dec 25, 2010

Thank you, again, for choosing to donate to our classroom. Words truly cannot express the gratitude I feel toward you for all that you have done for us. Thanks to you, the Karner Blue found some more fans. Equally important, my students became more confident in themselves as the blooming scientists that they are, as they spread their passion for nature. They had a fabulous time working on their presentations for the kindergarten classes. They were able to enhance their writing and presentation skills during this process as well, and they became more excited about learning! Every summer I spend a large amount of time reflecting on the previous year. One major difference that I observed this past year was my students' passion for science. It is true that elementary students are naturally interested in science. However, this year, the students were really able to foster their enthusiasm for science more than any class I have ever had.

I would like to express my sincerest thank to you for your amazing contribution to my students, their education, and their confidence. ”

  • Megabytes for Making Microscope Movies.

    Funded Feb 20, 2011

Where do I begin when I have so many people to thank? There are at least 26 donors who made this proposal reality, and several more who are part of a larger group or prefer to remain anonymous. The sheer number of donors gives me so much hope for the future of education in our country. Turn on the news today and politicians will be talking about slashing school budgets. In all cases it is not only the demonized teachers who bear the brunt of cuts, but very directly the children as well. Fewer teachers mean larger classes and smaller budgets mean less materials for those students. Next year my school will be facing cuts in the amount of paper and markers we are able to use. This is before we even began to set budgets for science materials or computers to upgrade our aging laptops.

Your donation was a piercing light through this doom and gloom. It speaks to the high importance of education in our society when so many people like yourself are willing to give hard earned dollars to a teacher with a vision in a school you may not know to students you've never met. My students do not take your gift lightly, either. I am a frequent user of Donorschoose.org, thankfully with much success. Therefore, my students are not strangers to receiving new supplies or equipment. When I unveiled the new computer to them though, they were astounded. "What is that, a TV?" asked one student. "No," I replied. "It's better...we can use it to take pictures and make movies of what we see in the microscope." Now while it would be nice for this to be met by applause, I have to be honest, there were groans. The first few times we tried it out though, there were "ooohs" or mouth agape staring.

This utterly beautiful machine you have sent us makes science more accessible to students who normally don't access much due to their newness to English. It gives us the conversation starter that gives students the reasons to use their new language. Also, in its brief time in my classroom, it has already been the tool for authentic, original student research. Several students submitted proposals for DNA barcoding research to a citywide competition. One group investigating algae has already used this computer to identify samples they collected.

For many years to come, your donation will grace my classroom and give opportunity to students who came to the United States seeking it. My students' stories are the new immigrant experience in America and they are the future of our country. You are now a part of that story and their ongoing success”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Wolf

  • Traveling to Washington D.C. to Inspire the Class of 2020!

    Funded Feb 7, 2011

Greetings and thank you. We returned from our trip to Washington DC last night and by all accounts the trip was a major success. Thanks to your kind donation, no 7th grade student at our school was unable to attend the trip due to financial reasons. We had such a good time. Our trip featured guided tours of the US Capitol and Library of Congress. A special treat this year was a private lecture inside the Supreme Court. We also spent time exploring the various museums of the Smithsonian and took a DC Duck tour in the Potomic River. Your donation helped us cover the bus, food, hotel and all admissions for the students. They took full advantage of all the learning opportunities provided and had a little fun too.

Thank you for supporting this trip. Without the kind donations you provided, the trip could not happen”

  • Classroom Hydroponics

    Funded Jan 13, 2011

Thanks again for your support for my classroom hydroponics project. The learning kits, especially the aquaponics kit, allow me to set up demonstrations quickly. The aquaponics demo kit shows the students how water resources can be reused and recycle - fish water is filtered and used to grow plants, the plants will feed from the fish water and "clean" the water which is then returned to the fish tank. The students also learned that water levels of all the 3 connected tanks are the due to expose to same air pressure. Students had designed and built different hydroponics systems by applying these concepts.

We will continue this project for many years. Thanks for your kindness to help me set up the hydroponics curriculum.”

  • Whodunnit? DNA Gel Electrophoresis Lab

    Funded Dec 17, 2010

I cannot thank you all enough for your generous donations to purchase our gel electrophoresis supplies. In the past, my students have modeled gel electrophoresis using handouts and paper. However, none of these activities have done the process adequate justice.

When I explained how the DNA migrates through the gel based on the length of the fragment and how it move because of the negative and positive charges in the apparatus, their metaphorical light bulbs flickered on. It is so incredibly valuable for students to see actual scientific apparatuses used by real scientists. This way they are not stuck with inadequate substitutes. While the donations allowed students to engage with the material, it also help them genuinely understand it, which will certainly enable them to do well on their high-stakes test.

My students and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Maloney

  • Classroom Cozy Corner

    Funded Dec 2, 2010

Thank you so much for your donation to my classroom. My students and I are so grateful for your kindness. Our listening center and cozy corner are a very important part of our classroom. The materials you donated to us are used every single day!

The children love going to the listening center to listen to stories and read books. Now that we have upgraded to a cd player, rather than a tape player, the children feel very "high tech" using the center. Many days children beg me to visit the listening center! They love using the new materials, as well as reading and listening to the new stories.

The bean bag chairs provide a cozy corner for the children to relax while listening to the stories or to take a break from the rest of the class if they are having a hard day. Many times, I send children to the cozy corner to sit and work out a problem together. By the time they leave the cozy corner they are best friends and inseparable for the rest of the day. The bean bag chairs help to make my classroom a relaxing and welcoming environment to all my students.

Thank you so much for you generosity to our classroom. My students' successes are because of your kindness!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Bennett
