My Students are Begging Me for New Books to Read

Funded Oct 10, 2009

I'm sure you've heard of the rather large budget shortfalls school systems across the country are facing in the wake of the economic recession. These budget woes have been even more pertinent in in our district, and our school system hear faces historic struggles as we try to make significant gains with our students with even fewer resources. Needless to say, it is no easy task.

Fortunately, my students were blessed with generous friends like yourselves. The books you all helped me purchase for my classroom have been the hit of the school. Not a day goes by when a student from another literacy class asks to borrow one of the many books you all helped fund. Fortunately, my students rarely leave any of the new books on the shelf, and for the first time in nearly two years, ALL of my students have been reading. As a result of our newly filled classroom library, my students' vocabularies have been increasing, their reading skills improving, and their willingness to participate in independent reading has exploded. As their teacher, this has been one of the most rewarding experiences I have had. Once again, thank you for your kindness.

Without your support, I don't know where I, or my students, would be. Once again... thank you.”

With gratitude,

Mr. Van Owen
