Let's help public school kids live healthful lives. How? By getting teachers the resources they need to launch school gardens, to promote nutrition and fitness, and even to teach math through cooking.
When I received the package of supplies of everything I requested and ordered my students were more excited than I was. Previously, I explained to my students about donorschoose.org and as a class we chose the materials needed for this project. My students have been actively involved. We opened the boxes of materials together with excitement and the students voiced their happiness on getting the things we need for the project.
We are using the resources for several projects and science labs when needed. We also have shared our resources with other grade level that needed the materials for science projects and research. The materials used was able to help plant flowers and tomatoes.
The project was able to boost my teaching and my students' learning by supporting the common core standards, set learning goals, and provided learning gains with the hands on projects and science labs.
Again Thank You for your donations!”

Thank you again for the seeds, Earth Boxes, and germinated seed visual display. The students loved investigating the seeds then looking at the germinated display. We cannot plant yet but in the next couple months I will ask the students to help me plan how we will plant the seeds. They are so excited about it.
Using the seeds, we discussed new vocabulary. My students need continuous review of new vocabulary because they are in Kindergarten and because many of them are English Language Learners. By the time we plant, they will be content experts in planting.
Smiles.”

Wow! Thank you so much for helping our students at Chico High "walk a mile in our shoes". With the help of your donation we were able to purchase 16 quality pedometers for our Physical Education department. Through the use of their step counts, this resource has allowed me to show my students the difference between full participation vs. partial participation in an activity during a class period. Since we teach, that students should have a goal of participating in Moderate to Vigorous intensity workouts for 60 minutes, 5-6 days a week, the pedometers have opened their eyes to what type of intensity they are performing at. Students have made comments comparing different activities that we do in class with how many steps they get.
Currently, I am randomly choosing 16 students at the beginning of class to use the pedometers for the day. At the end of class I have the students report to me their step count by showing me their pedometer reading. Students have been getting quite competitive with their step results. As I am walking into the locker room at the end of class I can hear people talk about their steps. "How many did you get?" "Ha, I beat you by 50." This desire to be active is exciting! I believe that students are learning the importance of staying active throughout the day with the implementation of pedometers for just 45 minutes 2 to 3 days a week.
My ultimate goal is to continue to develop a curriculum that I can use through out the year that will allow students to set goals and hold themselves accountable for their physical fitness. My hope is that students will get the recommended 10,000 steps daily by choosing to walk or be active throughout their day. By having students learn the importance of "walking a mile in our shoes" student are getting hands on experience that will hopefully encourage them to make positive lifestyle choices throughout their lives.”
I want to sincerely thank you for your donation to our program for the funds to purchase kitchen food preparation appliances and equipment. I cannot thank you enough for the impact that this will make on our program. Each week the students are required to work on preparing one food item independently. Being able to have the necessary kitchen appliances is invaluable for us as a program.
Because budgets are so limited, we would not have had the opportunity to purchase these things unless I did so personally.
The impact that this will have on helping our students reach their goal of maximized independence is tremendous. Thank you really does not do our gratitude justice.
The students were very impressed and thankful that they have more resources now to work on their independent life skills. Thank you again, from all of us. Your gift has made a tremendous difference.”

On behalf of myself and my students, I would like to thank you for your kind and generous donation. I teach in an urban school district where funds are limited. The funds we do have primarily are used toward the academic needs of our school and more often than not, there are no funds available for health and physical education equipment.
Our students take an elective where they learn first aid, CPR and AED techniques. Up until now they were only able to learn the AED techniques without the use of the proper equipment. This donation provided the tools for my students to be properly trained and therefore certified in CPR/AED. This equipment will benefit the students who are currently enrolled in the program as well as many more students who will enroll in this class in the future years.
Once again, I would like to express my gratitude for your generosity. It is through your support and compassion that my students will learn this most valuable life-saving technique. You have made a difference in the lives of my students.”
My students were in shock when I told them that people outside of their school cared about them and wanted to help them get a good education. When told that the materials for our class were donated, their faces began to light up. It honestly amazed them that complete strangers wanted to help them get a good education.
I have used the curriculum materials to complete classroom lessons and activities. The students have talked about different types of foods and how to prepare them. They are starting to feel like more confident cooks and have a better understand on food in general.
My students are excited about going home and cooking and want to show to their parents what they have learned at school. My students are taking the knowledge that they are obtaining in the classroom and using them at home. As a teacher, that is one of my goals for my students. Thanks to your generosity, my students are being engaged in the classroom and are sharing their new knowledge with their parents at home.”
With gratitude,
Teacher

Your very generous support has put technology as a tool directly into the hands of forty very grateful first graders. The kids and their parents now have the resources they need to directly connect and apply garden experiences to their daily health and nutrition choices. From the moment the box was opened until the last day of school the new computer was used for a myriad of tasks by students, parents and teachers. Plants and planting schedules were researched and plotted and potential garden science experiments were planned. Parents found out that the "Cuban Oregano" we were growing goes by many names in many different sub-tropical cultures around the world and were delighted to see their own culture reflected in our studies. We projected recipe and nutritional information for our last parent-child cooking projects of the school year- Asian Yardlong Beans. All that in just a month. Imagine all the places your donation will help the kids go in the years to come!
A very special thank you to Elsa for sending several copies of the Caldecott Medal picture book, "Tops & Bottoms" by Janet Stevens. What a beautiful and humorous way to kick off the new gardening season!”

I can't fully express my excitement and thanks for your donation to my project. It is great to see that you share my vision for reaching children through real-world experiences. There are so many ways to teach, but diving in and putting your knowledge into action is a true learning experience.
The tools that you have funded will enable students to expand on their own community garden, which will allow students in all grade to use and learn from. In addition, I will be able to teach the students about healthy eating habits, the importance of gardening, and so much more year round.
I hope to share with my school community an exciting way to engage children's learning through the community garden. Thank you so much. I can't wait to introduce these tools to the children.”
Thank you all for funding this project and providing my students with the materials we needed to build indoor greenhouses.
My students really enjoyed working with their hands to design and prepare and assemble the pieces that resulted in a desktop greenhouse. They were quite impressed with how well their design kept in heat and moisture. We decided to grow tomatoes and peppers within the greenhouse, and they grew very well, but we ran out of time in our school year to see them fruit. Now that we have the greenhouse built, we can start our plant unit earlier and harvest our fruits.
Thank you for giving my students this valuable learning experience and for supporting public education in New York City.”
Thank you all for helping to fund my project. I am excited about the upcoming school year and I am ready to begin the new year with new technology. I plan to continue to encourage my students to eat healthy and introduce them to apps that will promote foods that are good for you. I plan to work in our school garden this summer and plant foods that we will be ready to harvest when school opens. I know that this will impact my students but it will also make a difference in the lives of their families. My students and I are so grateful for your help”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Campbell
