It is with mixed emotions that I am participating in Mustaches for Kids. That's right, for the next four weeks, I will be subjecting myself to public humiliation and private doubt by growing what will no-doubt be a ridiculous looking Mustache. In order to justify this endeavor I need your support. Please sponsor my Mustache by picking a classroom project from the list below to support. And wish me and my Mustache luck. • Let's Paint Our Learning in Sight Words!

    Funded Dec 20, 2009

I would like to begin this letter by sharing with you the impact I've seen on my first grade students. First grade is an interesting year in school because students begin to take all of the little parts of knowledge they've acquired and put it all together. My students come to me in the beginning of the year knowing most of their letters and sounds; by the end of the year they are beginning to read chapter books!

The sight-word readers and activities purchased with this grant launched my students from knowing only the parts of reading, into knowing the "whole" of reading. It was amazing to see the engagement the students had with the sight-word readers because of the activity center! The major difference I saw was the confidence the students exhibited when reading aloud. Thank you, for that will last them their entire educational career, giving them the strength and courage to challenge themselves.

Your kindness and generosity are much appreciated! Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Oakley

  • "My Brother Sam is Dead" as a Classroom Study of the American Revolution

    Funded Dec 2, 2009

Thank you so very much for the class set of My Brother Sam is Dead by James and Christopher Collier. We have just completed the study unit and the students are completely connected to the Revolutionary War time period, knowing what it was like to be a young person living through it. As we continue our study of this time in history and look at the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, they continue to make connections to the story of our battle for freedom as seen through the eyes of a young man.

We read the story together, reading aloud from our favorite passages. The students kept a journal chronicling their responses as they read. We did a role play, with students becoming the characters in the story so that they could be interviewed by the class. We also looked at our favorite quotes and analyzed who said it and why.

I have my class say the Pledge of Allegiance every morning. During our book study, the students made a connection from the book to the Pledge, realizing that the soldiers who died during the Revolutionary War were committed to the freedom that our flag represents----'one country, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all'.

Your generosity has contributed to their understanding of what we had at stake during that war. ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. McMaster

  • Sensory Exploration & Muscle Development for Preschoolers!

    Funded Nov 23, 2009

Thank you so much for your generous donation to my classroom! My students were so excited the day our new Jump-o-lene arrived. As we began to inflate it and fill it with balls, I told my students about our special friends at Donors Choose who sent us a Jump-o-lene to help us organize our busy little bodies while just having plain old fun. My students could barely contain themselves as I inflated it!

The Jump-o-lene that you have donated is an amazing addition to our classroom. I can fit all of my students in it at once and stand back and watch as a huge smile begins to spread across each one of their faces. At first, the children just enjoyed laying in it, squirming around in the balls and exploring the sensation on their bodies. But once they figured out that they could JUMP in it as well, there was no stopping them!

Because of your generosity, my students look forward to rainy days because they know they'll have more time to spend in the Jump-o-lene. And they LOVE sharing their fabulous new sensory activity with their friends in our preschool. The other preschoolers in our school are envious of us because we have a new Jump-o-lene. You have brought joy to the lives of over 40 preschoolers with special needs!

I hope the photos that I have uploaded illustrate just a small glimpse of the excitement & joy you have brought to my students. May the smiles on their faces warm your heart with the knowledge that you put them there!

I cannot tell you how much it means to me that you, a stranger, would support my classroom for children who have special needs. As you may or may not know, special education programs are very costly for a school district and many times there is no funding to purchase "extras" like the Jump-lene you have donated. But what a difference these little "extras" make in the education of children!

From the bottom of my heart I thank you for your generosity. ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Ramsay
