It is with mixed emotions that I am participating in Mustaches for Kids. That's right, for the next four weeks, I will be subjecting myself to public humiliation and private doubt by growing what will no-doubt be a ridiculous looking Mustache. In order to justify this endeavor I need your support. Please sponsor my Mustache by picking a classroom project from the list below to support. And wish me and my Mustache luck. • Project Stagecraft!

    Funded Dec 8, 2010

When my students and I began this project, many of them doubted that people who didn't even know them would want to help them build a stagecraft library. As we watched the donations come in, the doubts turned into hopes, and hopes turned into our dream coming true.

The library is a huge asset to our classroom and is used daily. Students have researched projects, created activities, and learned how to construct using books in our room. The library will continue to impact our classroom as long as the class is taught.

We cannot thank you enough for this generous gift, and, even more so, for the gift of a wish coming true. With all of our deepest gratitude, we thank you.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Steiner

  • Students Would Benefit from a Document Camera

    Funded Dec 16, 2010

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Your generosity in donating to this project is much appreciated by myself and my 196 freshmen English students. We've been using the camera on a daily basis since it arrived in January. Nearly every student has had a chance to use it, and all are excited by it.

We've love the feature where we can switch back and forth from the computer to the documents themselves, and the kids are enjoying the fact that they can share their work on the "big" screen in such a way that all kids can see it.

It has made my life much easier, and is saving the state money (no more copying on to overhead transparencies--which cost a bundle!)

We will be posting photos shortly so that you can see the camera in action.

    Again, thank you!

  • Encouraging Active Reading in a Reading Intervention Class

    Funded Nov 15, 2010

This is a small token of my appreciation for your donation to my classroom. We have just begun reading Sherman Alexie's "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian," and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Multiple students have already come up to me and asked "when are we going to read more of the book?" which only demonstrates their level of engagement.

Your act of generosity has not only given them a valuable tool in building literacy acquisition, but a newfound sense of hope as well. One student, in his thank you letter, wrote "[h]aving lived in LA all my life, I never thought people could be that caring." You have shown them that despite the crime and despondency they witness in their communities, there are many positive forces at work as well.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Liaw

  • Tracing Our DNA Heritage

    Funded Nov 19, 2010

This was by far the most supported project that I have ever posted, and it was by far the most fun, the most education, and the best all around project that I have completed with my class. After collecting our DNA samples and waiting what seemed like an eternity, 5 weeks, our class was able to compare our collective results. Students were separated into 5 different haplogroups based on their maternal ancestors most recent migrations. Then I started a count down through time and the different haplogroups converged based on when they groups had first separated. In the end, at 80,000 years everyone was once again a part of the same group. Students were amazed that their ancestors had traveled such long distances. Other students were surprised at the halpogroups that they were a part of. My haplogroups was common, it is a Native America linage, and many students were surprised that we shared such a close ancestry since I am not a part of their same ethnic group. One student in class found out that their maternal ancestor was from West African, despite her never having known of any African relatives. Altogether this project brought the class together and spurred their imaginations. Thank you once again for giving us this opportunity.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Vizthum

  • Let Them Learn To Love To Read Books! (Comfortably!)

    Funded Dec 3, 2010

You all have simply transformed the spirit of my library and classroom with your generous donation to our project!

The students were thrilled to see the rug, beanbag, and pillows set up when they came back from winter break! They could not wait to get there and get comfortable! Of course, I could not wait for them to get reading! And that they have been doing!

Students work harder to complete their work earlier (or for some on time at all!) in order to be able to go and enjoy themselves reading in the library. This has just already had a tremendous impact on our room! You can feel the excitement of the students about reading! They are really learning what a great and relaxing experience it can be.

We are working on getting a couple more beanbags and floor pillows through another project which is currently on Donors Choose. This will allow this area to be even more enriched and engaging. As you can see from the "before" picture (the first one), this area was uninteresting and underutilized. Your kindness and support have brought color, interest, and joy to this area of our room, and I will always be grateful. ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Demro

  • Paint Your Way To Creativity!

    Funded Dec 14, 2010

Thank you so much for your generous donations of paints, books, and a drying rack for my classroom. The students have started using the all the supplies and love them! The books really help inform their artwork and educate them about other cultures and artists. My students have started to create many paintings of different subjects including: still life, design, landscapes, figures, and abstract paintings. The drying rack has proved invaluable, as it allows their artwork to dry without being damaged. They love having a gallery walk at the end of each class period in order to see all the great artwork created that day! Thank you again for you support of the arts!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. H
