It is with mixed emotions that I am participating in Mustaches for Kids. That's right, for the next four weeks, I will be subjecting myself to public humiliation and private doubt by growing what will no-doubt be a ridiculous looking Mustache. In order to justify this endeavor I need your support. Please sponsor my Mustache by picking a classroom project from the list below to support. And wish me and my Mustache luck. • Help Open Up MS 80 Students to Global issues!

    Funded Dec 8, 2009

I want to send out a tremendous thank you for the donation of the class sets of A Long Way Gone. It was such a generous gift and all of my students greatly appreciate it. I have two eighth grade classes currently finishing up the book, and they have gotten so into it. We are at the point now, where they moan and complain if we are doing a lesson or activity other than reading the book. It is such a great feeling to have students so engaged and interested in a book, and that was made possible because of you all.

Before we started A Long Way Gone, my students did not even know where Sierra Leone was, much less that there is a phenomenon of recruiting child soldiers for war. I had noticed that my students had a lot of preconceived notions about what it is like in Africa, and what goes on over there. This book has really helped them connect with cultures that are different from theirs. The author of the book does such a great job of showing how human he is and how he got into his situation of being a child soldier. The students can not get over the fact that this is a real person who now lives in New York City. They are always asking so many questions after ever chapter; it is great!

When the classes finish the book they are going to be putting together a project where they can either produce a broadcast of the events going on in Sierra Leone, or they can come up with a soundtrack to go with the book that illustrates the main themes in the book. They are so excited. They have learned so much during this unit, and A Long Way Gone really helped bring it to life. Other teachers in my school are very eager to use the books in their classroom after we are done. You have helped to ensure the learning of so many students. Again, thank you so much for your generosity! ”

  • Helping Our School's Ecosystem

    Funded Dec 7, 2009

The materials you've purchased for us were fabulous. The children had such a wonderful experience composting, observing the lady bugs and observing the life cycle of a butterfly.

We started with the composting first. The students learned first hand about vermi-composting(composting with worms) and how worms help recycle organic materials faster. The students brought in coffee grinds, eggshells, and news paper from home. We have used the worms for several lessons. Besides learning about composting the students have learned about vertebrates and invertebrates. It has been fascinating to the children to how worms can be helpful to the ecosystem.

When the butterfly larva arrived the students started a "Butterfly Observation Journal". They used the journal to log the changes. Within a week the larva changed to pupa then 10 days later they emerged as butterflies. This was thrilling for the adults as well as the children. I even let the children hold the butterflies. This was one of the greatest experiences I have had as an educator. Thank you for helping my students with this enrichment project.”

  • Healthy Teeth, Healthy Bodies

    Funded Nov 9, 2009

Thank you for your generosity in funding my proposal, Healthy Teeth, Healthy Bodies. I've never seen children so excited over a toothbrush and toothpaste! So many of them, whether they were kindergardeners, first graders or fourth graders said, "thanks, I needed a new toothbrush!" I wish I could package and send you the feeling I got when they said that! Their reactions are always such a visceral reminder of the important work we do together!

I'll continue teaching them healthy habits. Thanks to people such as yourselves, my job is a great deal easier!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Reis

  • The Joy of Cooking and Eating Together

    Funded Dec 13, 2009

This is a small token of appreciation for the wonderful cooking equipment you have supplied for my kindergarten class.  The children are so invested in learning how to cook and run home bragging about all of the tasty treats we have made to their families! Parents have come in the next day to ask me for recipes.

I cannot fully express how much my students look forward to our Tuesday morning cooking lesson.  The students sit eagerly and wait to be called on to crack an egg, mix, flip, measure, and pour.  They are practicing counting skills, measuring skills, and literacy skills as well.

It is because of you that my classroom has benefited from the extra special lessons that I am able to do with the cooking supplies. We have studied geometric shapes with grilled cheese sandwiches, made green eggs  for Dr. Seuss's birthday, learned how to make healthier snacks by incorporating fruits into treats, and  discussed the benefits of healthy eating to top it off!

I thank you again for the fabulous deed you have done.  My students are so happy and so am I!”

    With gratitude,

  • We Feel The Need...The Need To READ!

    Funded Nov 12, 2009

I would like to personally thank all of you for your generous donations to my class! Because of you, we are able to study a time in history that is so important. The gap is growing each day between that horrific era and today, but thanks to you, we are bridging that gap. It is my duty as an educator to make sure my students have the knowledge, foundation, and tolerance so history does not repeat itself.

Thank you again from the bottom of my heart. You have made this school year (and many more to come) exceptionally wonderful! ”

    With gratitude,

  • Books of Wonder!!! Part Deux

    Funded Nov 10, 2009

I cannot begin to tell you about the excitement and joy that my beautiful students felt when I opened the brand new books and unveiled them in our classroom library. They immediately grabbed books and partners and found cozy spots around the room to read and continued to do so until I had to stop them for lunch. Some of my children even wanted to take their books with them to the cafeteria so that they could read during recess time. Your generous gift is something that is enjoyed by my students every single day and it has such a great impact on their learning and future. I believe so strongly in instilling a love of reading and books at an early age and fostering that love and growth could never be possible without the support of donors like you. Since they received news that the proposal was funded, my students are constantly asking me about you and truly think of you as their friend. On behalf of my 26 bookworms and of the hundreds of students that have yet to benefit from your generous donation, thank you!!!!!”

    With gratitude,
