  • Another Virtual World Trip

    Funded Oct 15, 2009

It has been such an honor to receive these wonderful instruments and cultural items for my students to learn about other countries. We have been enjoying thoroughly the rainstick, mini-steel drums, poi poi, cuica and finger cymbals. In fact, the steel drums and rainstick were used in a play that my 3rd graders performed just today!

Being in such a rural area, we don't often get to think about things outside of our county. Many of my students haven't even been outside the state! It is a global marketplace these children will enter when they graduate, and you have helped give them a small glimpse of life and people outside of what they know. Hopefully, it will help them gain an understanding of diversity and tolerance that they might not have had otherwise.

Again, thank you for your generous support of the arts in education! Without the arts, we would eventually run out of things to read and write about.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Tickel

  • Moving Me: An Autobiographical Photo Essay

    Funded Oct 25, 2009

Thank you so much for supporting our instructional program by donating digital cameras to our classroom. The Moving Me: An Autobiographical Photo Essay project was a big hit with our students. By being able to use digital cameras students were able to learn a new language of storytelling. They were able to explore visual strategies by taking pictures that had personal meaning. They were then able to develop their understanding of sequencing and transitions by using a storyboard. And finally, they were able to improve upon their written language skills by adding text to their photo essays.

The powerful effect of the project went beyond the instructional skills learned. Because of the very personal nature of the project, students felt empowered and motivated to learn. These positive learning experiences improved the overall quality of our learning environment. And by being able to share their personal lives and off-campus experiences with others, the kids were literally able to visually experience how their own lives are full of meaning and importance. By experiencing success, students undoubtedly improved both their sense of self and self-esteem.

These experiences were further reinforced when the children shared their photo essays with others beyond the classroom. They not only broadened their own worlds but they also expanded the perspectives of others by the sharing their stories. Thank you all for providing us with these wonderful learning opportunities.”

  • Make a Difference--STOP--Childhood Obesity

    Funded Dec 22, 2009

Dreams do come true, even during a recession. Thanks to your generosity the students of Mrs. T's class will stamp out childhood obesity. Your donations are a wonderful example of the support shown toward fitness and health education. Once again thank you for opening your heart, your contribution is deeply appreciated.

This year one of my goals are, for students in Mrs. ’s second grade class at Fickett Elementary schools to wear pedometers as part of Fickett’s Fit Kids, a program that challenge the students to take at least 2,000 steps a day. The other goal is to increase their activity level and improve their health. Fickett’s Fit Kids is to create a walking program aimed at raising awareness of the obesity epidemic and cardiovascular disease.

Fickett’s students received their pedometers, and we started walking daily, students log their steps into their walking journal books. During the program, students are required to keep track of their steps by writing down the number of steps registered on their pedometers each day in their student log journals and make an effort to increase the total. Student’s goal is to walk at least 2,000 steps a day.

Every Friday students are served fresh fruit (Dole, Sunkist, Michigan Apples, and Fresh Farm) and Vegetables (Green Giant, Eat Smart,). Students who finish the program will receive a small gift token and a certificate of completion.

Thank you for the donations to make this project a success. I'm excited and so are the students, we are ready to make fitness and a health a part of our daily life.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Taylor

  • Liquid Learning

    Funded Nov 21, 2009

I cannot even begin to thank you all enough for your support! Your generous donations have helped start an "eco-state of mind" in my classroom. My students are more focused and have been noticing the differences between each other due to the constant water source that they have. We have been using the water bottles every day and as we continue our investigations and self-evaluations, we are realizing that we must keep our water sources clean and safe!

Our school is currently facing a budget shortfall, so without your help, my students would have missed out on an opportunity to begin thinking critically in terms of keeping our planet green and safe. Thanks to your support, our young scientists, doctors, and world leaders are on their way to preserving our planet!

Without donors like you, thousands of students in the United States would go without valuable experiences that make learning concrete and permanent.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Na-Russ

  • Visual Learners through Visual Art through Visual Videos!

    Funded Nov 24, 2009

Thank you so much for providing the students with this opportunity! The students have watched and enjoyed all the videos you helped purchase!

The students appreciate them very much as it helps give them a greater understanding of the artist and artwork we study.

So once again, thanks to you, the students are very interested in learning more about other artist and artwork. Students had taken notes and was even more interested in who we will be studying next!

    Thank you for this experience!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Angela S.

  • If You Read the News, You'll Know!

    Funded Oct 12, 2009

Your generous donations to my classroom are greatly appreciated. The cameras that you donated are a big hit with my students. They are learning how to use the cameras safely and correctly while documenting events in and around school. The addition of student photographs have also added a special touch to our classroom and school newsletters.

If you something about taking photographs, you know that it takes a lot of practice to produce a quality image, one that will print well and convey the feeling the photographer has intended. This is a great lesson for my students- patience and perseverance. They didn't believe it could take 10-15 shots to get one image that looked good enough to print. All this while trying to make them candid shots has changed my young photographers view of the art of photography and what it takes to capture their world in print. I have included in this package a few of the photos that students took around the school.

Your donation is helping my students see things in a different light (literally). They are photographing the good, the bad and the so-so and writing about it with a new energy. ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Ford

  • Awesome Learning Through Magazines

    Funded Oct 9, 2009

Thank you so much for our magazines! I cannot recommend Storyworks enough. The learning that will take place with these magazines throughout the entire school year will be amazing!

The students love the poetry in the magazines. They love playing the Mad-Lips every month! And little do they realize this is helping them with their writing skills by knowing a noun and verb!

I have to say the favorite part of the magazines for the fourth graders is the Reader's Theatre! They love to put on the plays. They love just reading the plays. Thank you for giving them the opportunity to have fun while learning.

I, and the other fourth grade teachers, want you to know how much we appreciate you allowing our students to own something. This magazine is theirs and they do not have to share with anyone (unless they want to with their siblings, and many do!). Thank you for allowing them to have their own copy to keep; it is something so little but it means so much.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Pitcock
