It is with mixed emotions that I am participating in Mustaches for Kids. That's right, for the next four weeks, I will be subjecting myself to public humiliation and private doubt by growing what will no-doubt be a ridiculous looking Mustache. In order to justify this endeavor I need your support. Please sponsor my Mustache by picking a classroom project from the list below to support. And wish me and my Mustache luck. • Turning Trash to Art and Saving the Environment

    Funded Feb 28, 2011

As you can see from the photos I posted my students have been thoroughly exploring the potential of creating recycled art with the heat guns. Students not only learned about the importance of recycling and the alternative ways we can recycle (i.e. a piece of art), but they also learned about being flexible and working with the spontaneity you get when working with the guns. Many projects we created varying from sculpture pieces to pendants and pins.

Thank you for supporting this project and giving my students the opportunity to explore a new art medium. I also thank you for your patience as I complete this thank you package.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Maas

  • Teaching Today's Techies with the iTouch

    Funded Apr 14, 2011

Your generosity in helping us receive iPods in our classroom is greatly appreciated and has greatly enhanced the instructional climate of the class. Students are excited to use the devices across all content areas and are generally just more excited about learning. They are really hoping we can get some more of the devices in the classroom in the future so that we can do more whole group activities with them.

From Science apps, to using the cameras to capture pictures of Math related vocabulary, the possibilities are endless with mobile learning technology and I thank all of you once again for understanding what education entails in a 21st century learning environment.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Strine

  • Photographs, First Graders, Families, and Fred Rogers!

    Funded Feb 22, 2011

This letter is a small token of my appreciation for your donation of camera cases, memory cards, and a photo printer to my first grade classroom. My students have used the cameras on numerous occasions already, and the cases and memory cards make it possible for them to use them both inside our classroom as well as in their homes and around the community.

They used them to take pictures of themselves and to talk about what makes them special. They are an especially important part of our field trips to our children's museum, where we have some of our social studies lessons. The printer allows us to print the pictures out when we get back to the classroom, enabling us to make more connections between what we do at school and what we are doing in our community. The students are currently using these materials to do a culminating first grade project that focuses on what they have learned in the past school year and how they have changed. One unexpected benefit of being able to print the pictures out for the students is how much more engaged they are in anything involving the pictures they have taken. They focus so much more when it comes time to write about these pictures! I love seeing the pride and joy that they take in sharing these mementos of their families, friends, and community with one another. I also love knowing how special it makes them feel... something that comes from the donations of people like you and from the lessons of Fred Rogers that they are learning each day in social studies.

Without donors like you, my students never would have had this opportunity. Thank you so much for making it possible.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Cain

  • Seniors Last Lecture

    Funded Feb 15, 2011

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support and assistance in acquiring Randy Pausch's The Last Lecture. While my students were reading this memoir, they began to feel a deep connection to some of Randy's advice. Many of my students have expressed to me how much this book has made them think about their future. I have noticed students who were not inspired to read anything all year begin to carry this book with them everywhere. They embraced this book in such a way that I was touched.Several of my students even asked for their own personal copy of the book because they wanted to reread it. Of course, I gave them one of the copies of the book as a graduation gift because they were so touched by Randy's words.

My students have now finished reading the memoir. One of the activities that I asked my students to do after reading this memoir was to write their own last lecture to give to the juniors. Many of my students embraced this idea and bestowed wonderful words of wisdom upon the junior class.

As a unifying theme for the senior class at my school district, the students chose The Last Lecture as their graduation theme. They plan on incorporating some of Randy's bits of wisdom into their graduation speeches.

So I just want to say thank you for inspiring my students. ”

  • Double Duty Divider for Storytelling and Comprehension

    Funded Feb 11, 2011

My students absolutely love our new divider. It allows my classroom to be separated from outside distractions while providing a creative place for my students to discover storytelling. My students love listening to stories and acting them out with colorful, interactive materials on our storytelling room divider.

With these visuals, my students are able to better understand sequencing, characters, and character actions. Stories come to life on our room divider, which provides the stage. The room divider also acts as a separation in the room that gives my students a quiet place to reflect when they need time to themselves. It has made a huge difference in my classroom!”

    Mrs. Borden

  • Calculating for Acheivement: Success in the Math Classroom

    Funded Mar 9, 2011

Thank you so much for your generous donation to our classroom. The calculators will be a great addition and help us complete our class set. The students will now be able to each individually use a calculator and occasionally borrow them for tests if they need them. My Statistics students are really getting the hang of using these tools to their advantage and are ready to start mentoring the younger students.

Please continue supporting classrooms across America. Many students are in need of supplies and DonorsChoose.org is helping fulfill these needs and help children reach their dreams.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Thompson

  • Help Us Get Organized!

    Funded Mar 1, 2011

Wow, that's pretty much my feelings. Thank you all so much for your donations. I just finished painting with my students. I can say that this is the perfect therapy after the hours of standardized test taking we did this morning. We just finished a story in our reading series called "Me and Uncle Romie." Romie is Romare Bearden in real life, a collage artist from Harlem. The students really identified with this story because it talks about life in the inner city, which is exactly like our town. So we just completed our paintings of "Our Town." So much fun!

Also, I am so excited that our reading books have somewhere to go now, on the beautiful new bookshelf. It frees up a lot of room on the classroom shelves, for our games and new art supplies!

The wire rack holds math papers, drying paintings and so much more. And the students can finally see the board with the new dry erase markers on the board.

In closing, the gifts you have provided us are amazing! My students were floored when they saw all of our new supplies being delivered. Then it was like Christmas opening the boxes. They all send a big "THANK YOU!" your way. And I send you mine too. Thank you all.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. DeFazio

  • Higher Level Books For Super Fast Learners

    Funded Feb 11, 2011

I cannot thank you enough for your donations to my classroom. These books mean the world to my students! They finally have enough books on their level that they can select on their own and make choices about their reading. My students have begun to ask to read after they complete their classwork. They absolutely love to pick out their own books and read in our library. My students, especially my first graders, have truly fallen in love with reading.

My students want to read these new books so badly that I have to set a timer for reading! They actually get upset when it is time to go back to their general education classrooms because they would rather partner read. Our school does not have a library so this classroom library is the only opportunity my students get to pick their own books. It has made such a difference in their lives and your generous donations have made it possible.

Thank you for everything you have done for my students and my classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Borden

  • Volleyball Improves Girls Fitness and Self Esteem

    Funded Feb 15, 2011

    Hi,

I would like to thank all of you so much for your caring and dedication to physical education.

Education is having a budget crisis all over the country and for you to donate to my project is outstanding. I really appreciate that you choose my project with your hard-earned money.

It means a lot to my team. Some of my girls can't afford to buy their own knee pads. Your donation will help my girls be able to learn and play without limitations.

Again I would like to say thank you on behalf of my team and myself. All of you really have made a difference in the lives of my students.

    Thank you

    Mr. S”

  • Let's Have Fun...In School???

    Funded Feb 22, 2011

Thank you so much for the donations you made towards my project making it possible to purchase the literacy games for my students and our classroom. They are having a blast with each and every opportunity to learn and play the games. It is great to see the excitement on their face when I tell them we are going to have literacy stations with our new games. They truly enjoy each and every minute spent playing and learning.

It is also amazing to see the students using the new vocabulary they are learning, developed while playing the vocabulary games. They especially love the wrap-around games because of the participation of the entire class and the learning that takes place as a group. It is great to see the academic growth while the students play our new literacy games. It is not always possible to include these into the classroom, due to the purchasing of materials, but you have all made that possible. From the bottom of my heart and on behalf of my students, we are so very thankful! ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hersch
