We the People: Helping ELLs Understand the Constitution
Funded Aug 17, 2013This project was inspired by a colleague who expressed interest in how to help newcomer ELLs gain a better grasp of principals of the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Such concepts are challenging, and are even more so when the students are refugees whose very countries do not practice such freedoms and ideas.
As we opened the boxes, the students' faces alighted with happiness. They smiled as they paged through the books. Though the students have developing English language skills, they need to do grade-level work. Having leveled books such as these, I can front-load the knowledge the students will be exposed to in 7th grade; I can also review the concepts with the students using more accessible text.
It is through the work of donors like yourselves that these students can have access to books such as these. I am ever so grateful for your support and your donations.
Thank you so much.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Wolf
