  • We the People: Helping ELLs Understand the Constitution

    This project was inspired by a colleague who expressed interest in how to help newcomer ELLs gain a better grasp of principals of the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Such concepts are challenging, and are even more so when the students are refugees whose very countries do not practice such freedoms and ideas.

    As we opened the boxes, the students' faces alighted with happiness. They smiled as they paged through the books. Though the students have developing English language skills, they need to do grade-level work. Having leveled books such as these, I can front-load the knowledge the students will be exposed to in 7th grade; I can also review the concepts with the students using more accessible text.

    It is through the work of donors like yourselves that these students can have access to books such as these. I am ever so grateful for your support and your donations.

Due to the diversity of Little Rock Central, some of our students do not have access to these resources. Because of you, these students are now able to use these computers to improve their debating ability. Our students are thrilled to have access to these resources. Because of your contribution, we are able to better prepare for debate rounds.We are now able to learn about more complex argumentation, and students develop a deeper understanding of these arguments.   • Making Peer Education Great!

    Your generosity has made SUCH a difference already - what a relief! What a difference it has made to be able to easily, quickly research essential, up-to-date health information, use that information to create interactive, fun, informative 60 minute student-led lesson plans with great graphics that really brings the material to life and gets the whole class involved, and lastly feel secure that because of the back-ups, we won't lose all their efforts for the future! Once the equipment was in place, the students kept pointing out to each other how fast everything was and finding great ideas to share with each other. So much of our learning came from the process of researching alone - vetting the information we were gathering, assessing visuals for our content goals, etc.

    In the last few weeks alone, we have been able to lead a fantastic "Safer Sexual Decision-Making" workshop, including a full-class jeopardy game and posters with understandable graphics for the visual learners within small groups, and a workshop called "Everyone's Included" about and standing up against bullying and isolation. Word of mouth, the ending surveys, and teacher feedback has showed that both have been very successful both for the student leaders and their audiences.

    My sincere apologies that the photos don't really capture the spirit of the fantastic work they have already completed; it is just my incredibly poor camera skills. Please understand our gratitude in making this possible... we couldn't have done it without you, and the students have truly been buoyed by your generous spirit. I laugh every time they say things like, "So total strangers just GAVE this to us so we could do this?!" We appreciate what we have already been able to accomplish in this short time, and we've only just begun to learn about and understand the technology we now have!”
