  • Taking Our Students to See Bully!

    Funded Apr 19, 2012

School discussions on bullying are important, but can't always present the full impact experienced by others who have been bullied. Being harassed as in the movie, "Bullied," helped students learn the emotional trauma it causes. Students were able to learn about the hurt and some of the effects bullying has on others.

Students were able to develop a deeper sense of empathy toward bullied classmates and understand the importance of supporting those being agitated.

Attendance at this showing allied support of peers with bullied students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Alter

  • Unified NOT "Bullified"

    Funded Apr 19, 2012

Our trip to see the documentary on students being bullied helped solidify empathy and compassion among my students. After reflection and discussions about the movie, my students were very moved and truly opened up about their own experiences as a victim of bullies or actually being bullies themselves. This was incredibly powerful. My students seem much more accepting of one another and are striving each day to continue open lines of communication and overall acceptance of one another. This grant allowed my students to watch the documentary as a united group which in turn brought them together.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Doyle

  • "Bully" Trip - Combating Cultural Conflict Through Film

    Funded Apr 16, 2012

Thank you for your generous contributions.

My sincere apologies for the incredibly delayed thank you.

Since I was funded for this grant, I made a move to high school and so am able to continue working with many of the middle school students I initially did this project with.

At my new school, we have been doing a restorative justice initiative to help students take student expectations into their own hands. I run a peer mediation group called the Fairness committee which prevents bullying by creating peer spaces where students can resolve conflicts before they escalate.

I have been working with other teachers and deans at my school to try to decrease suspensions and thus curtail the school to prison pipeline that sometimes results from archaic discipline systems.

Your grant funding incentivized students to really think critically about bullying and high peer expectations of student behavior. I too was fueled by this experience to continue working toward progressive discipline and increased student autonomy.

Thank you for supporting me and my students.

Since I no longer have photos from this experience, I have uploaded a flier for one of the restorative justice initiatives at my school.

Please continue to support the good work of teachers and students in schools.”

    With gratitude,

    Teacher Forbes-Gray

  • Bully Project

    Funded Apr 19, 2012

I cannot thank you enough for making The Bully Project available to my students. We were able to take three full grades of students to see the movie while enjoying a snack. The movie made quite an impact on the students. The narratives, posters, and classroom conversations that followed over the course of the year showed how much the students gained from experiencing the pain of the victims of bullying. When completing argumentative essays, many students chose to write against bullying.

The impact continues. I had students who were included in the project the following year. They STILL were talking about it. Students were looking for ways to work towards eliminating bullying. This past year, students created argumentative essays regarding the fact that Pennsylvania does not have laws against cyber bullying. They want to see this changed, especially after they did research and saw the statistics.

Bullying plays a large part in the lives of many students. I am happy to say that you have given them a voice to fight back and to stand up for others who are being bullied. You are a hero and have truly played a part in making the difference in the lives of many children. For this, I am grateful.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. DiMartino

  • School Trip to See Bully

    Funded Apr 25, 2012

Thank you for your amazing support towards this project. Our entire school got the opportunity to see the film and discuss the effects of bullying as well as make a commitment to be upstanders against any injustice. Our entire school was so moved by the film and we are so grateful for your support. The effects of this film have been so profound, walking around school you can hear deep discussions surrounding the topic and the importance of friendship. We hope to continue this campaign of acceptance and respect for each others' differences. Thank You!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Amado

  • Let's Fight Back Against Bullying!

    Funded May 1, 2012

Thank you so much for your generous support of our school and students. Living in the Bay Area shelters our kids from the worst of the bullying that happens in schools, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist, and it doesn't mean that my kids don't feel its effects. The designation of "lesser" still goes on, but because it isn't overt, because there is not always outright maliciousness involved, the kids don't always identify it as bullying. But it still scars. At the beginning of this year, my principal conducted an anonymous safety/climate survey, and the disappointing outcome was that a high percentage of our kids admitted to not feeling safe at school.

My kids were inspired by the movie Bully to actually start a movement of change. This year, the students in our Gay-Straight Alliance organized and led what they called a "Make a Change" Workshop, and the movie Bully was the centerpiece of the day. We even passed out "no bully" buttons to the attendees to commemorate the event. The response was amazingly positive. I was so proud of the leadership and activism demonstrated by my students. Even more exciting, this group of students (mostly seniors) have promised to come back to help organize three more events like this over the course of next year, and my hope is that soon the majority of the students at this school will be proud upstanders instead of helpless bystanders.

Change is slow, and sometimes painful, but, as the movie so clearly showed, if we work together we can make a difference. Thank you so much for helping us take our first steps!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Gerdts

  • Stop Trading Insults Like Baseball Cards!

    Funded Apr 19, 2012

thank you so much for helping me take my students to go see Bully. IT was a great film and explored topics that are really important. Bullying takes place in my school all the time and this gave my students a chance to step back and view it in a way where they could be more thoughtful about it. Students were referencing the movie for many days afterward.

My students also rarely get the opportunity to go on field trips so this was a big treat. It makes them feel cared for and more significant instead of lost in the system. I appreciate all your help in making that happen.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Appelbaum

  • Stand Up and Don't Stand By! Part 2

    Funded Nov 20, 2012

Thank you for funding the cost of the theater, so we could offer the BULLY documentary to our entire school community at no charge. It had a big impact on our students, staff and parents and was a great way to kick off our Stand Up Don't Stand By campaign.

We had a full theater and our campaign was a huge success. Some follow up activities our students organized were the 30 Day Challenge and Silence the Violence Day.

Many of the students applying to be in our Human Relations Council for next year, stated in their application that the BULLY documentary was life changing. Thank you for making it possible!”

    With gratitude,

    Teacher

  • From Bystanders to Change Agents.

    Funded Sep 25, 2012

Thank you so much for your funding to take my students to see "Bully". It was a great experience for the 200 students and teachers that attended the trip. We are honored to be one of the many schools that were given this chance.

Through the discussions of the movie, it was clear that the documentary really impacted our students. The stories of each child who was feature resonated with our students and got them thinking about our own school climate. As teachers, the documentary served as a catalyst for in depth discussions about our role in guaranteeing student safety. In fact we have discussed facilitating a professional development for our other colleagues using the film.

With our severely limited budget and counseling resources, your funding for this trip truly gave our students an opportunity they would not have had otherwise.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Rodgers

  • Bully Movie Trip

    Funded Oct 23, 2012

Thank you so much for giving my students the opportunity to see the powerful film Bully. I have had many conversations with students about the film. Many of them were touched deeply by the film. They expressed empathy for the characters and some related to them on a personal level. Several things came up over and over again in my discussion with students, but two themes dominated. Many said that they would think twice about the things they said to others, even in jest and the other overwhelming theme was that if they see someone being bullied in the future they will intervene. I cannot thank you enough for helping my students become more sensitive, aware individuals who can share their lessons with others.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Kurnitz
