Welcome to my Giving Page! Please support my efforts in Science Bloggers for Students challenge, a friendly month-long competition (10/10/10 through 11/9/10) between science blogs to see which can do the most to help low-income classrooms on DonorsChoose.org. Pick a classroom project from the list to support. And let’s beat the other bloggers! (By the way, DonorsChoose.org is a 501(c)3 charity. See below for approvals from Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau.)
It is difficult to overestimate the impact an LCD projector can have in a math classroom -- particularly a geometry classroom. When a student is able to see and manipulate precise geometric figures in many different colors and iterations, the class changes vastly for the better.
In addition to the ability to display geometric information, the projector also allows us to go through much, much more material than if we were using a chalkboard. It allows every single minute in class to become more valuable. In fact, I think you may find in my students' thank you notes that they have said the very same thing.
So thank you for changing our learning experience for the better -- we couldn't have learned so much without you! ”
This is just a letter expressing my sincerest gratitude for the donations. They are truly appreciated and have made a huge impact on my students' success. For example, we don't have to ask parents to purchase pencils or make monetary donations for a sharpener. In addition math is more exciting, the texts have allowed my students to appreciate mathematics through literature. They also love the other text, Big Words For Little People. What has really shaped my students' thinking are the Weekly Readers, every week they learn more about and explore exciting expository topics. Thank you so much.”
I can't tell you how excited my students were to finally get a new, wide projector screen! No longer do we have to make the picture small enough to fit on the old screen. That screen was falling apart and had graffiti on it. The new screen is beautiful.
I use the screen almost every day. Kids love to come up to it and explain things to their classmates. It is very clean and smooth to use. It is just the right size to fit between the air conditioners, yet afford us the biggest viewing screen. Students can see it perfectly from anywhere in the classroom. We do a lot of trigonometry lessons on the screen and it is great for displaying diagrams. I have already seen an improvement in student interest.
You should be very proud of your donation and the impact it has already made.”

Thank you all, very much, for your kind and generous donation. Thanks to your help, each of my Algebra 1 students now have a review book of their very own so that they can adequately prepare for their state examinations.
When I passed a review book to each of my students, they were all both confused and pleasantly surprised that people such as yourselves took the time and resources necessary to ensure that they will pass their Regents exams and help them graduate on time. It is not frequent that people would spend this type of effort and thought into ensuring these students to succeed, and I firmly believe that you have truly positively impacted the lives of these young people.
Thank you very much for your act of kindness!”

I would like to thank you for donating to my project. The children in my classroom will enjoy the materials that you supplied. The materials that you sent will improve the math skills and ELA skills of my students in my class. It is a blessing to see so many donors who care about the future of our children.
I can't fully express my joy, excitement, and thanks for your donation to my project. It is great to see that you share my vision for reaching children. In math, we so often use abstract explanations to explain abstract things.
The tools that you have funded will enable students to create and explain their own concepts with concrete tools, which will associate to the abstract. In addition, I will be able to demonstrate setting, mood, theme, and other genres in math. The Intelligent Train will be great. !
I hope to share with my colleagues a new technique in learning. Thank you so much. I can't wait to introduce these tools to the children.”
Thank you for your contribution to this project. We have already used several of the books that were purchased to help enhance our math curriculum. We have used Math Fables to help us embrace our own creative writing as we write our own math fables using a free computer programing software called Alice.
Also, we are using G is for Googol to understand a variety of mathematical ideas and concepts. The kids really seem to enjoy the use of this book and the creative activities that have been developed to go with the book.
Using several of the other books we received,we also started literature circles. These extensions of relating math and language help my students see how math can be applied in a variety of ways in our world, even in story writing.
Thank you again for your donation to my students and their understandings of mathematical concepts”

A Pencil is such a simple thing, just wood and graphite. You probably have a whole pile of them at home in a drawer or cup somewhere. For my students there are no supplies waiting for them to refill their bag should they misplace or use up their current pencil.
However, now because of your donation they know they can come to our room and get a writing utensil anytime they need one. This make for happier, better engaged, and more productive students in our school. Your donation helps these kids work their way towards a brighter future.”
Our brand new AP Statistics textbooks have arrived!!!!!
Having this resource for the students to practice what they have learned daily will be an enormous help to them on the AP exam. This course uses graphic displays heavily, and having examples to refer to while working on their homework will benefit them immensely.
Prior to the books arriving, the only complete class set of books I had was for an outdated book that focused on mechanics rather than concepts. Statistics is all about the meanings behind numbers, and your contributions will help make my students statistically literate, opening their eyes to these concepts.
Thank you for helping to work towards this goal.
Your generosity is greatly appreciated by myself and this hard-working group of students. ”
It's such a benefit having BrainPOP! in my classroom. Not only does it supplement my lessons with fun and interesting videos, but it also has educational and enjoyable games for the students to try.
In the photos, you'll see my kids (and me too!) using BrainPOP! on our smartboard. If their HW is good, they can come up during our lunchtime. Additionally, there are times during the day that they can go to the free standing desktops and work with a topic of their choosing.
I really appreciate that you noticed my proposal and thought it worthy enough to fund. Thank you so much. ”
A thousand thanks never seems to be enough when we are talking about the impact your donation has on the lives of children. Whether from affluent backgrounds or poverty, children are all eager to learn and have fun.
The resources you have provided with your donation has already made a huge difference in how my students view mathematics. It no longer is a frustrating subject but has become one of their favorite times of day. They are able to write in their new journals the things they have learned. They also are using the dry erase boards and are not afraid to 'work out' their problems and answers. The manipulative they enjoy the most is the fraction stax. It is a fun and engaging way for my students to understand and manipulate fractions. This is an abstract part of math that many children get frustrated with. The fraction stax helps them to overcome this frustration by clearly showing them the parts of a whole and letting them explore equivalent fractions.
Many thanks from all of us. We hope you continue to donate to these very worthy proposals.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Hart
