Get Kids Outside

I believe in the power of getting kids outdoors! Kids today are so connected to the electrical umbilica that they have lost the natural instinct to explore the natural world that, sometimes, is just outside their front door. I believe in the power of getting kids outdoors! Kids today are so connected to the electrical umbilica that they have lost the natural instinct to explore the natural world that, sometimes, is just outside their front door. Perceived stranger danger and the hustle of everyday life does not help the situation. As a result of this "inward movement", we are raising a generation of children that is obese, unable to focus, scared of the outdoors, and lacking the sense of wonder that nature evokes within each of us. Let's support efforts in schools that will draw children outside the classroom and help combat the effects of 'nature deficit disorder' that is rampant among today's kids! hide
  • Soil Stories

    Funded Dec 17, 2008

My students and I are sincerely grateful to you for your generosity in helping to fund our Soil Stories project. State funding for our school has become severely limited, and as a result our district has frozen teacher budgets for classroom materials. Thanks to your generosity my students and I will be able to continue our study of local ecosystems throughout the school year. The equipment will allow us to monitor and collect data for the purpose of successfully maintaining our current school prairie ecosystem, and for locating a suitable future site for a second prairie ecosystem. My students will also be creating classroom gardens for our studies of genetics and classification. This equipment will facilitate the students' ability to create favorable conditions for optimal growth of their plant specimens.

    Sincerely,

    Ms. ”

  • Habitat Investigators do Rapid Assessment

    Funded Dec 30, 2008

Thank you so much for your generous donation. With these materials, my students will be able to do rapid assessment activities on our field trip to China Camp State Park. We will be investigating the salt marsh, meadow and oak habitats at the park. We will also use the materials at our school site and possibly on our overnight trip to the Gold Country. Having these materials in my classroom will allow future students to use them as well. Again, your donation is greatly appreciated”

  • Sprouting Community: Creating An Urban School Yard Garden

    Funded Oct 14, 2008

Thank you so much for your generous donation to our project. This group of 25 students will now finally be able to start planting! The hand tools will be used once we start planting outside in the spring, and the soil and seeds will be used now for some indoor gardening.

The students plan to add some greenery to the school library, the office, some teacher offices, and of course the science room. Through watching the plants grow the students will learn all about botany as well as the delicate art of caring for living things.

Again, thanks so much for your donation. We are so excited to begin!

    Sincerely,

    Ms. ”

  • Building Gardens...Building Community

    Funded Dec 17, 2008

I was so excited to hear that my project was funded. The notice from Donors Choose made my day!

My students are in the heart of the project now, they are almost finished story boarding and writing the narration for their video pod casts. When we get back from Holiday break we will be ready to begin the filming portion of the project.

You will be excited to learn that the video broadcasts will be used as part of our cities Earth Day celebrations. Schools from all over the district have been invited to bring their students to interact with the projects created by students at our school as part of our "Operation Green School"...where we are showing other students how schools can be greener too and how we all have a responsibility to the environment.

Your donation has a far greater impact than just the students in my classroom. This is truly a great gift. Thank you so much! We will use your contribution to benefit the entire school and reach as many students as possible.

    Sincerely,

    Kathy

  • Can You Dig It?

    Funded Nov 22, 2008

What a great surprise to check my email and see that my proposal, "Can You Dig It?" was funded! The children in my class have been planting pansies in our garden and the addition of our Rolypig Composter will be so exciting to all of us! They are already learning about composting through the care of our worm farm. By using the composter we will be able to dispose of our soiled guinea pig bedding in addition to more fruit and vegetable scraps. Not only will my students have the experience of relating this cycle to gardening, but they will see that there are many ways to minimize our output of garbage and take better care of the earth.

Again, thank you so much! I appreciate your donation more than I can possibly say.

    Sincerely,

    Debbi”

  • Science Materials For Urban Kindergarten Class - Part 2

    Funded Oct 11, 2008

I would like to extend my deepest thanks to you for donating to my proposal. In a few weeks, my class will begin an investigation of light and color and with your help this will be a hands-on and safe experience for all. My young students will be able to look closely at objects on the light table and test their own hypotheses about light and its properties. The light table you have helped to fund will be an integral part of our kindergarten science curriculum for many years to come. Thank you for helping to provide a thought-provoking resource for my students!

    Sincerely,

    Brook”
