This challenge is a combined effort of Kim Hannula (All of My Faults Are Stress Related), Anne Jefferson (Highly Allochthonous), and Erik Klemetti (Eruptions). We've chosen a group of projects that involve rocks, earthquakes, water, weather, soil, and other topics related to the Earth Sciences. Please help us bring earth science projects to schools in need!
I am the teacher of a great bunch of science students at a small, rural high school. I want to try to put into words just how grateful I am to you for your generosity in funding the environmental library for my classroom.
Because our school is in a poor, rural area purchase of enrichment materials such as the these for a classroom are not feasible without organizations like yours. You really made a difference to these kids. It is critical that they learn about such an important topics.
Your generous donation has enabled these students to have these resources Thank you again for your generous gift. Donor's Choose and the generosity of wonderful people like yourself has been a real godsend to classroom teachers.
Sincerely, Mrs. G”
With gratitude,

This classroom project was brought to life by Duke Energy and 4 other donors.
This is just a small token of my gratitude for your contributions to my classroom. The books you donated have helped my students to gain knowledge they would have otherwise struggled to learn from materials that would have been far above their reading level. The books will continue to be of great use for future students.
Our school lacks a school library because of space and lack of books. Your contribution has aided in getting books into the hands of students that we would otherwise be unable to have.
Without donors like you, thousands of classrooms in the United States would go without materials.”
With gratitude,
Teacher

It means the world to having caring people that are willing to donate into the lives of young people. It is amazing how something that seems so small as binders can make a huge impact on the academic progress of students.
The binders provided will not only be used to help my current students but also the students I will have next school year. I can't thank you enough for your generosity and providing my students with the necessary supplies to learn.”
Thank you for making a real difference in the lives of some very deserving children. Your recent contribution to my project, "Groovin' Guitars..." enabled me to purchase musical equipment for my class, and truly electrified a group of children who would have never enjoyed such a transformative, new experience if it had not been for your generosity.
The project you funded was part of our school's initiation into the Little Kids Rock program, where I am trying to introduce my inner-city school children to the joys of creating and performing music. For many of my under-served kids, this is their first exposure to this joyful medium.
I wish you could have been with me in the classroom as these wonderful children opened your gifts of support for their singing, songwriting, and performing, with eyes wide and smiles even wider. Those kids were my 5th graders, all moving on to middle school, and I can tell you that your donation helped insure that they each ended their primary school experience with a unique and lasting experience, thanks to your support.
Thank you so much for what you have done. I want you to know that you have personally impacted a very special group of children who will carry your gift with them for years to come, and for the little ones who are now picking up this year where they left off. ”
Hi, I am hoping this letter finds you all in great health. My letter is a symbol of my appreciation and thankfulness for the assistance with my cause. I wanted to thank the sincere donors that contributed to the better educational opportunities for my students. I truly thank all of the donors that donated to my project. The materials that you funded were a tremendous aid to educating my students. They have were more engaged and excited to complete their scientific tasks. These little scientists have loved learning more about magnets, soil & dirt, heat energy, rocks and fossils, and many other scientific skills.
The science resources that your donations provided helped my students in preparation for the state assessments and standardized testing. They were able to revisit skills and concepts that were previously taught. By using these materials, I have helped my students improve their knowledge of numerous scientific skills that third grade students need while moving to fourth grade. As the resources arrived, the students' faces were lighting up and filled with curiosity. They wanted to know what was inside and how they would get to utilize the new material in class.
As the years progress, my upcoming students will have the opportunities that my current were afforded because of the donations to this project. My students and I are extremely blessed and appreciative to have donors and generous people like you all reaching out to aid educators. Your donations for these resources gave my classroom atmosphere a much needed boost. This boost is extremely exciting when science time approaches. Thanks so much for aiding us with our scientific needs.
If there were not donors like you all available, countless students will not have the essential supplies to make learning valuable. When learning is meaningful, students immerse themselves in the content and information being presented. I would like to extend my gratitude for your assistance in educating my students and making science more sensational for them!”
Dear Matt& Liz, Jason, Josh, Marion and Anonymous Donors
I am humbly writing this Thank You letter on behalf of my students and myself. When my students are successful, this means that I am successful. Seeing my students accomplish things that they didn't think they could do is very rewarding.
You provided the support that was needed to help them succeed and I will forever be indebted to you. I'm proud to report that my students represented quite well. I had eight students that won Gold Awards in the science project competition.
All of the materials requested will also be able to be used in future years. Thank You for helping me help my students.”
I cannot thank you enough for your generous donation towards the Science equipment that was purchased for my classroom. The children were very excited to use the new equipment. They enjoyed learning more about bugs with the use of the talking microscope. The children loved pretending they were archeologist's on a fossil dig. It was a great extension of our unit on fossils.
The students used the information on the back of the animal cards to write their own animal report. The information was written in very easy to read language. They had fun separating the cards into different animal groups and learned the difference between carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.
The most exciting piece of equipment for the children, was the volcano. If you look at the pictures I sent, I think they speak for themselves. The eruption of the volcano was quite thrilling to them.
Hands on material is such a wonderful way to extend a lesson. Thank you again for helping to make Science an exciting topic for my students. Your gifts will be well used in my classroom for years to come. ”
Thank you very much for your generous donation. My students had so many opportunities to engage in hands-on activities with respect to weather and climate.
We used the ultraviolet beads to investigate ultraviolet light. The electromagnetic spectrum can be a difficult concept since we only see visible light. The ultraviolet beads helped my students to understand ultraviolet light. The beads are white until they are exposed to ultraviolet light. Then, they light up in various colors. What a great visual! My students devised investigations to test the effects of different materials in blocking ultraviolet light. They also took the beads home and tested materials in their home environment. Some of the materials tested were: water, glass, sunscreen, fabric, paper, and aluminum.
We also built hydrological cycle models. We used gravel, saltwater, cotton balls, plastic cups, pans, and saran wrap to make models of evaporation and condensation. The students were thrilled to come in the next day and find that their models actually produced condensation.
Thank you so very much for the generosity you expressed to my Kindergarten students and myself this year by funding our water grant. I have been working for the past year or so to develop a quality Science Center for my students to explore that addresses a wide variety of topics and skills.
One theme we learn about is Sinking/Floating. The Sink or Float Discovery Kit you purchased greatly added to my students' experience. The objects were ones that were of interest to my boys and girls. We were able to experiment whole group and then the children enjoyed "experimenting" on their own. I used the Colors Science Tub with my Enrichment Group. I teach colors in-depth at the beginning of the school year and am anxious to incorporate this project at that time as well.
The two games: Fishing for Numbers and Fishing for Phonics were both big hits with my boys and girls. It was very easy to adapt these games to where they would work with various levels. We brought the games back out during our Ocean Unit and had lots of fun!
I used the above activities as I taught water conservation throughout the school year. We learned about our responsibility in preserving our waters and ways we use water and why it is important to take care of our water. Thank you again, so much, for the generous contributions and know we are so very grateful.
It was so wonderful to be the recipients of new science materials. It definitely sparked renewed interest into our science center. Science topics are usually exciting to the children, but with the introduction of the materials you provided for us, the children were ecstatic. These hands-on experiences were needed by all the children and have been appreciated. We are grateful and honored to have been chosen by you and sincerely thank you.
Each day at center time, the children were eagerly waiting to have a turn to go into the science center. It was so rewarding to observe them and listen to their comments about the materials. One of the biggest hits were the magnetic shapes. The children were able to learn about magnetism as well as building fun buildings. The Seuss books on science topics were read one a day to the whole class and later placed in the center for each student to have a closer look. It gave me the opportunity to present various science topics to the children. This aroused interest in new subject areas that evolved into a whole theme in the science center for a couple of weeks.
The microscope screen was a new experience for the children, They liked using it and observing the specimens. They observed for example; a butterfly's wing, leg, etc.
The great thing about all these materials is that they will be used again this coming school year (2010-2011) for a whole new group of Pre-Kindergartners! ”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Baykowski
