Welcome to my Giving Page! Please support my efforts in Science Bloggers for Students challenge, a friendly month-long competition (10/10/10 through 11/9/10) between science blogs to see which can do the most to help low-income classrooms on DonorsChoose.org. Pick a classroom project from the list to support. And let’s beat the other bloggers! (By the way, DonorsChoose.org is a 501(c)3 charity. • Microscopes: The Windows To Another World

    Funded Oct 7, 2010

I am very grateful to all of you for your donations. I thought the amount of funds would take much longer to reach. You obviously see the importance of quality equipment in the science classroom. These microscopes will allow the students to get a better education by doing hands on science. I have received a lot of positive feedback from my students. For some of them, this is their first experience using microscopes. They were amazed at the (until now) hidden world that has been around them all this time. One of my students often swims in his grandpa's pond at the farm. He thinks it is cool knowing what kind of life is swimming all around him. Some of the girls were not so excited to hear that information. Thank you to all for making this purchase possible for me and my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Heinrichs

  • The Hip Bone's Connected To The... Trombone

    Funded Oct 16, 2010

Of all the projects I have put out on the DonorsChoose website, this is my all-time favorite. Thank you so much for funding this fantastic resource. Our new skeleton is the star of the school, spending time in both our music and science classrooms. Whenever he is in the room, the students flock to him.

Today I was using him in one of my band classes to teach the students about posture and a group of students began discussing the parts, asking questions and were so engaged in learning that the class period seemed to fly by... all without any prompting from me. What a wonderful dynamic classroom our new friend helps to create!

So please accept my heartfelt thanks for your generosity. This resource will be a permanent fixture in our school and enthrall thousands of students for many years to come!

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Nelson

  • Translate Science To Success

    Funded Oct 8, 2010

Thank you so much for donating to my project, it truly means a lot to my students and I. The books, magazine subscriptions, and dictionaries that you helped to donate enabled my students to create AMAZING projects about the human body! Many of my students have a difficult time comprehending very challenging texts, but these resources helped me differentiate texts so that my students could truly get the most from their reading. In addition, the dictionaries come in useful and are used multiple times per day. My students could not imagine my class without them!

With the dictionaries and books you helped supply, each of my students were able to create a projects about the human body. Since they are all enrolled in "Medical School" we had a "Medical Conference" where they all presented their projects. They could not have created meaningful projects if it were not for your help with these resources.

In addition, the subscription to Weekly Reader has completely transformed how much my students know about current events in science and health. Every Monday they come in wondering what the article of the week is going to be. It's great to see them so interested in science!

I cannot express how grateful I am to have people that support and believe in my students. My students and I really appreciate your generosity.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Gratz

  • Scientific Discovery!

    Funded Oct 13, 2010

I wanted to thank all of you for donating these Science materials for my classroom. They have completely changed the way that I teach science. Instead of explaining things to the students and showing them pictures and video clips of experiments, I have been allowing them to do their own experiments and learn by doing.

The first unit that I introduced the materials was our magnet unit. The students went around the classroom and tested different items to see what was magnetic. Then they compared the objects to figure out a reason they would be magnetic. The students had a blast and really understood the concept. For weeks they wanted to test things when they saw that they had metal.

The Gears set is absolutely wonderful for my students, as well! They really made my girls interested in building things. This set is used daily! I am looking forward to Spring to introduce the butterfly pavilion and Ladybug Land. I am sure that the students will see life cycles in a completely different manner then every before!

Thank you again for your generosity! We appreciate it more than words can say”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Gaspard

  • Digital Camera to Supplement Learning

    Funded Oct 6, 2010

Thank you all for your wonderful donation towards our digital camera. The camera has brought our learning to life! It has impacted my students learning so much. The camera is being used in many different ways. One way that has really made a difference is we record student acted skits on vocabulary words that they are learning. We then display the video on the projector and reinforce the vocabulary. The students have improved their vocabulary drastically through these activities. We have also had students take pictures of different images that relate to what we are learning. After printing them we put them on our concept wall! With this digital camera learning is more fun, engaging, and memorable.

Thank you for making my class a better place to learn in!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Larochette

  • Sticking Science Together: Life Recycled

    Funded Oct 6, 2010

I wish each of you could visit our classrooms while the students are building cities, spreading holiday cheer and creating science critters. There is a distinct sound of constant chatter. Upon closer inspection you would determine the students are on task and having a great time meeting the necessary requirements for the project they are working on.

Since I teach both 7th and 8th grade students, the 8th graders are particularly excited to have the glue and glue sticks your generous donations purchased. Last year building their science projects was extremely difficult for them. This year, the labs we have done that require the use of glue have taken much less time and have produced a much higher quality product.

My students are somewhat baffled at how someone would generously donate to students they do not know. I believe this made them feel very special. I thank you for that. You have made my job easier and increased the quality of their education. I am humbled at the donations of former students, parents of students and those donation given by persons completely unknown to me.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Brown
