  • Help Support a Hands-on/Student Centered Science Class

    Funded Feb 7, 2011

Thank you again so much for your donations and your generosity. In this school year I have been able to provide a curriculum that is more visually engaging and up to date through technology. Students have been able to relate science topics to newer information with the use of the projector. Also, we have been able to accommodate students who have sight problems. The students have also been able to use chart paper to explain main ideas in small groups.

The pencil sharpener has been so helpful to my classroom as well as other teachers. Many students prefer to use pencils rather than pen and many times students could not afford personal pencil sharpeners. Luckily, because of this donation, many students of mine as well as other teachers have been able to use the sharpener.

Thank you again so much for your generous donations and for making a difference in our students education. ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Hong

  • Bringing School Alive Through Technology!

    Funded Feb 11, 2011

I wanted to write once again to thank you for your donation and let you know the large impact that the Mimio Board has had in our classroom. The students have used the board across subject areas, and have become very proficient in using it! They were so excited the first few days that we used it, that I began incorporating it in all subject areas each day! I found that the students were more engaged, and were able to participate on a variety of levels in each lesson.

Our school is currently struggling to provide more opportunities for students to engage in using technology, however, due to budgetary constraints, purchasing more technology for classrooms is out of the question. The Mimio Board allows all students to utilize technology on a daily basis.

Without donors like you, my classroom and thousands of classrooms like mine, would go without. My students and I are thankful for donors like you every time we use our board. ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. J.

  • Minnows to Marigolds: Where Autism and Aquaponics Unite

    Funded Feb 26, 2011

My students and I would like to thank you all for your generous contributions to our project. Your donations have helped us to create, from start to finish, a vertical garden that now stands in the lobby of our school. The students cultivated the plants from seeds to flowers, and then placed each plant into it's own bottle where it now sits in the vertical garden.

Every day, my class walks to the cafeteria and sees their work prominently displayed. The faculty and students of the school admire their work and now compliment my students when they see them in the hallways. This has raised their self-esteem and confidence to levels we could have only dreamed of. This will also be something that they will continue to work on until they move on to high school.

Once again, we would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for taking the time to give to students who will never be able to thank you in person, but appreciate your generosity more than you will ever know. You have truly displayed the meaning of "paying it forward".”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Botnick

  • Help Us Make Music

    Funded Mar 1, 2011

I would just like to take a moment and thank each and every one of you for your generous donation to our choir program. I am still left speechless by the generosity of so many people that came together and made this project a reality. My students are very excited that they have supporters from all over the country.

So far, we have used our new sound equipment to produce two school performances. I have received numerous compliments about how good the equipment sounds and I always take that opportunity to explain the donorschoose.org process. Because of your donations, our choir can continue to learn and perform new music for people in our community. In addition to using the equipment for concerts and other performances, I also use it class almost everyday.

We have plans to use this equipment in off-campus concerts and other community events. This would not have been possible without your help. On behalf of our choir and community....thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Chambers

  • Which Came First? The Chicken Or The Egg?

    Funded Feb 24, 2011

The students are still buzzing over the "egg"excitement of our project, which ended four days ago. I want to share a time line with you to give you and idea of how awesome you are in helping with this project:

When the equipment and supplies arrived four days before our project began, I thought they are beyond excited. It was not until the lessons became reality (the chicks hatched) that the students were nearly flying with pure joy. I placed the eggs in the incubator on March 8. I placed the incubator on my desk with a make shift video monitor. For 21 days the students watched in anticipation.

As luck would have it, day 22, the chicks began to hatch. Our first arrived at 9:10, moments after the day began. They got to watch life enter the world, and more excitingly, they heard it! It peeped so loud that they began to giggle. By day 24, 19 eggs hatched our of 24 and we had a peeping class - students and chicks included!

We spent 4 days practicing how to hold the chicks and how to care and treat them, then moved into more complicated practice. I included a picture of students teaching the chicken how to follow "mommy". This was a supervision and responsibility lesson as the chicks were to walk around, but not have free reign.

Then the 'farmer' came on Wednesday April 13, and the students were able to ask questions on the life their babies would have. Yes,  few cried and "awww"-ed when the chicks left, but that tells you the impact the unit had on them. The students have learned so much. Thank you.

They are now referencing their experience when situations warrant it, or not. Its wonderful to see and hear how much they learned”

  • Band: A Reedy Good Idea that Sticks!

    Funded Feb 4, 2011

Thank you so much for your kind generosity in donating to this project. Your donations have provided some essential materials for my band students, without which they would not be able to even practice their instruments. The Standard of Excellence method books have helped the trumpet and trombone students to find and match pitch when practicing along with the CD, and the saxophone, clarinet, and flute students are all thriving in a more clearly structured method. The new reeds have also increased the confidence of the clarinet and saxophone students playing, and they are more eager to practice and play. We performed our first concert for the elementary students, who were enthralled by the performance.

Thank you for showing the teachers, administration, and other students how important music is to our school. I cannot tell you how much these seemingly small donations mean to my students and the community around them.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Wolcott

  • The Power of Listening

    Funded Feb 14, 2011

Thank you so much for your support in making my listening center a reality. I entered a classroom that had nothing, not even student desks. I had to request desks, chairs, and bookshelves. Most of the furniture I received was old and falling apart. I didn't have anything either in the form of a CD or cassette player until I was funded by your wonderful generosity. The students are using the listening center during center time and individual students are using it to reinforce their reading skills. Students are listening to CDs and tapes while following along in the book, a skill that is helping develop their reading skills.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Ramos

  • Computer to the Rescue. Part 2

    Funded Feb 7, 2011

Thank you all for funding this project and providing my students with a HP computer they can use in class. Most of my students come from very low income families. Many do not have access to a computer with internet service at home. These students must rely on the resources that our school can offer. We have one computer lab, but it is not available to all students as the lab is used as a technology class most of the day. Your very generous gift places a computer in my classroom that my students will be able to use during their class with me. As I often require that they do a research assignment that requires access to the internet, having available computers in the classroom will ease the burden that the project would place on the most marginalized students. Thank you for bringing technology to my classroom. Thank you for supporting my students. And, thank you for supporting public education in New York City.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Oszust

This classroom project was brought to life by HP and 24 other donors.
  • Math Problem Solving and Classroom Organization

    Funded Feb 7, 2011

Thank you so much for your generous donation to my classroom project. With the new materials, my classroom has become better organized, more smoothly run, and brighter. The math workbooks have helped to make test prep for the state exam more interesting, more challenging, and more specific to each student's needs because I received books on so many different levels. The portfolios have allowed me to create an assessment portfolio for each student, so all of their data is easily accessible and kept in one central location. The students love getting their portfolios to be tested! The homework turn-in organizer has saved precious instructional time in the morning, so students can quickly hand papers in their proper subject box and then easily move on to the next task. It has also made it easier for me to track complete and incomplete homework, as well as quickly distribute completed homework to their proper class work folders.

The mailboxes—not only do I love them, but the students can't wait to check their mail at the end of the day! Each student has their own mailbox with their name on it, and we have an assigned homework helper who easily distributes all papers before students pack up at the end of the day. That corner of the room is brighter, cleaner, and the mailboxes have saved me precious desk and counter space because there is far less paper clutter around my room. I also have my own mailbox, where students can leave me notes from parents, permission slips for trips, and anything they may need to give me. The students love leaving little notes in my mailbox for me to check, and they love knowing everything they need at the end of the day is already sorted and waiting to be picked up. It also helps students who are absent to track the work they need to make up, and any important papers they missed being handed while they were out.

Finally, the printer has been a godsend. Not only does it print, it also copies and scans. My old printer was missing its back and jammed every single time I printed, which meant that I needed to stand behind it and catch each piece of paper individually as it exited the printer. There were days where I would spend my entire prep standing behind my printer, catching paper, so I could have the worksheets I needed. Now, all I need to do is press the print button, walk away, and come back a few minutes later to beautiful pieces of NON-JAMMED PAPER!!! Not only that, but I can make copies that are either single or double sided, saving me paper and time. My students can print their work without worrying about the printer breaking, and I have everything from the computer at my fingertips whenever I need it. It truly has changed my day, and the efficiency of my classroom.

Again, thank you so, so, so much. It means so much to me that you would chose to give your money in this difficult economic time to help my classroom and my students. My students also thank you—every time a new box came into the classroom, they squealed with excitement and couldn't wait to see what was inside. For people they have never met to help them in such a meaningful way has not only enriched their classroom, but it has also enriched their character and understanding of the kindness of human beings. THANK YOU!!!! ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. G.

  • Help Kindergarteners Make Mathematical Magic

    Funded Feb 5, 2011

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your generous contribution to my classroom. We have received the new math supplies and center games and my students are so excited. We have used these materials several times already! Every time it is math center time my students are so motivated to learn about math.

These games have really provided my students the opportunity to share, talk, and problem solve together. These games foster invaluable skills for second language learners. These math games are helping my students grow in mathematics and this would not have been possible without your support!

Your support has really helped my students! They love their new math games and are excited about learning! I cannot thank you enough! ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Orabona Zinno
