  • Brains, Hearts, Kidneys, Eyes, Oh my!!!

    Funded Jan 29, 2012

Thank you so much for generously donating to our project. Anatomy and Physiology is a very difficult subject to learn, especially with very few resources. Some of my students had never had the opportunity to dissect before; others had only participated once in their lives. These opportunities are so important in building motivation and preparing them for college.

Receiving these organs to dissect helped my students understand anatomy in a whole new way. They were blown away that the eye was so difficult to cut through, and that there were so many structures inside. They finally understood the structures of the heart and how each contributed to the heart functioning as a whole, and they were mesmerized by the brain. These were all organs they had little interest in before seeing them with their own eyes. They were excited about learning the structure of these organs and had fun showing off their knowledge to those who came in to see what was going on.

You have truly enriched my students lives in a very powerful way. Thank you for your kindness.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Teece

  • Life Science: Dissecting And Exploring With Students

    Funded Nov 9, 2011

Thank you for these life science materials!  My students have been so excited with the different materials that we have used so far.

When one of the praying mantis eggs hatched and there were a few hundred baby praying mantis crawling around in the container, one of my students could not leave to do his work.  He was so excited!

We dissected the Sea Stars last week and many of the students were a little grossed out when we started.  A few minutes after starting the dissection, they were all engaged in cutting open one of the arms.  After we finished, they were very excited about what they learned about the internal and external anatomy of the sea star.

We will be dissecting the earthworms and crayfish during the month of May.  My students are really looking forward to both of these dissections.

Thank you again for helping make these exciting projects available to my students”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Caradonna

  • Animals All Around

    Funded Oct 17, 2011

Thank you so much for your generous donations to my project. You provided amazing resources for my students that truly took their learning to the next level.

Throughout the unit, my students were incredibly engaged and interested in everything we were learning about animals thanks to your thoughtfulness and generosity. The resources you provided allowed them to really dig deep and have an amazing hands on experience.

Many of my students are still asking when we can learn about animals again. Together we inspired a new generation scientists.

Thank you once again for your donations!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Allen

  • Future Scientists Need Specimens

    Funded Oct 17, 2011

The dissection specimens were a wonderful gift. My students were amazed with the specimens. Students located body parts in the rats that the students learned from the human body model. Students removed organs after identification and discussed the organs' functions. Students oohed and ahhed over their discoveries. Students invited other non-science teachers to see their dissections. Two parents came to class to observe.

Your generosity changed my students' views on science. I saw students not engaged in science become exemplary model students. My students will take this experience with them. These students will become our future scientists. Your gift affected over one hundred students at our school.

Without you, the dissection would not have been a reality. Thank you for this gift.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Sanchez

  • Let's Do Dissections!

    Funded Oct 18, 2011

Your donation of dissection materials to our anatomy class has provided an exceptional hands on experience for students who have merely had the barest essentials in the past. My students were ecstatic to have new dissection supplies as they had previously worked with very dated toolkits. They could not wait to cover the various chapters to have the opportunity to dissect the corresponding organs.

Our district is currently operating under strict budgetary constraints which have prevented us from purchasing dissection specimens the past few years. Your generous contribution has positively impacted the lives of 140 students who are considering an occupation in health science. Thank you again for your contribution to the futures of our children.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Greene

  • From a Classroom Aquaponics Lab to an Empty Classroom

    Funded Oct 25, 2011

I want to thank all of you for your donations that have allowed my classroom to benefit from the Digital Dissecting scope that we received. With this scope's ability to be plugged into a computer and the image to be projected onto the screen, the line of students all waiting for their turn to peek into the scope has become a thing of the past. This scope has become an integral part of the  classroom for it is permanently set up and plugged in. It has broadened the depth of so many of our labs ranging from protozoa, to germination, organism observations, dissections and plant reproduction. There are few tools that have the ability to interest every student in the room and a dissecting is certainly one of them.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Finlay

  • The Stolen Cells of Henrietta Lacks!

    Funded Oct 21, 2011

I am so touched and grateful for the funding of our project. Henrietta Lacks' story has helped launch an educational journey that my students will not soon forget.

By funding these books, you have given a great opportunity to my students. These books have encouraged my students to become stronger readers and more effective critical thinkers; they have encouraged them to become advocates for their own health and the health of their loved ones and communities. Without you, this real-life application could not be possible, and valuable science (and life) lessons would be lost.

I am thrilled to be able to share this inspiring experience with my students and colleagues. Thank you so much for your generosity and support!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Mucha

  • Help Bring the Excitement of Nonfiction to Our Classroom!

    Funded Dec 10, 2011

After many generous donations and weeks of setup work and practice in the classroom, our students have a leveled, curriculum-aligned nonfiction library to help us grow our brains and reach our goals! Thank you so much for your commitment to elementary literacy!

I can only begin to explain how helpful our library already is. The first project we completed with our nonfiction library involved our new biography section. Because of our library, students had access to many different subjects to research through books closely matched to their reading levels. Our next ELA unit is about nonfiction scientific writing. Because of your generosity, students will be able to shop for books from leveled bins that correspond to each unit of study in the 4th grade science curriculum.

No other class in our 1,100 student school has such a useful and expansive classroom library. Other teachers have been inspired to post grant requests to Donors Choose, and students from different classes and grades have been stopping by the room to shop for their own leveled books. Thank you for helping a very deserving classroom full of wonderful kids! Your donations really made a difference!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Mack

  • Seeing The World: One Clip at a Time

    Funded Oct 25, 2011

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for helping me get a projector for my classroom. I have been using the projector on a daily basis with my laptop and document camera. My students have learned so much because we are able to watch videos through our Discovery Educaton video streaming that we have at our school.

The students have enjoyed reading stories aloud, sharing their writing and learning new math skills since we have received the projector. My first graders love to see their work projected on the big screen ! I have also modeled writing lessons and we have done math work together using the projector. In science we have learned about weather, animal habitats and will be learning soon about pushes and pulls. I am now able to use many different forms of media to enhance the students background knowledge through using the projector. We have watched videos about the different types of weather and learned about the water cycle. The students really enjoyed seeing many videos about the different animals in the world and their habitats,

The children in my class this year and for many years to come will be able to learn in a whole new way thanks to all of you! My students are now understanding that they are able to see the world through the use of technology. I wish you could see the faces of my students when they see something on a video or finally understand a concept when we use the projector. It is such a wonderful thing when learning happens and this was the best gift we could have ever received! ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Guidoboni

This classroom project was brought to life by People's United Community Foundation and 12 other donors.
  • It's Systematic

    Funded Dec 5, 2011

I cannot begin to convey my gratitude for your generous donations that have allowed us to bring this dissection unit into the classroom. It has been phenomenal to see the students so enthusiastic about science, completely focused and determined. Listening to their discussions amongst their groups demonstrates that they are not only developing a deeper understanding of anatomy and life science, but analyzing and making comparisons with the animals they are dissecting and human beings. It has also had an additional benefit of getting our families more involved with their children's education because several parents have come in to join us for dissection.

These students who live their lives surrounded by poverty need hope and inspiration. This unit is allowing them to develop aspirations and goals for a possible future in life science. They are eager, they are exploring, they are discovering. Thank you for helping them see that anything is possible for them!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Larson
