  • Perfect Pig Dissection Lab

    Funded Oct 19, 2012

Thank you so much for donating to my class project. The students love working in the science lab and were very excited to see their project fully funded. When it comes to low-income schools, receiving a gift and seeing that people care about their success is so special. Their faces lit up when I told them how much money was raised and donated towards their education and lab activities. When it comes to science, getting in the lab is important and exciting. They are able to broaden their horizons and use different parts of their imagination that can't always be utilized in the classroom. Again, thanks so much!”

  • "Cutting Edge" Mammalian & Echinoderm Dissections!

    Funded Oct 17, 2012

Thank you! Through the medium of dissections, I sought to correlate extensively on embracing and fostering literacy skills with ELLs(English Language Learners), as this population has blossomed substantially within our school. Providing visual connections along with dialogue and scientific vocabulary promotes the engaging attainment of language within this population of learners. Dissecting the various stimulating organisms allowed my students to feel success and sheer joy at being able to interact with their own learning. The opportunities to actively engage the students were simply amazing and the conversations were awe-inspiring. Keeping all our conversations in mind, we sought to improve upon and strengthen our writing skills by employing sentence frames and newly introduced vocabulary through our use of Leilen Shelton's "Banish Boring Words." Dissections are a perfect springboard to activate a innate sense of curiosity in all students and a true motivator for active learning to step into the forefront of a student's well-rounded mind.”

  • Inquiry Through The Philosophy Of Protozoa And Parasites

    Funded Oct 17, 2012

I cannot thank you enough for your generosity in funding my students' "Protozoa and Parasite" project. It was an incredibly real and meaningful experience for my students. They were able to act like true scientists as they examined and identified different living protozoa and stained parasite slides under the microscope. This type of hands on learning is crucial to do real science and it would not have been possible without your contributions to provide the specimen required.

As we move onto other units of study, we will continue to study the complexity of protozoan organisms as we discuss evolution and global health. This new learning will be all the more memorable because my students were able to see the organisms before their very eyes! The materials you helped provide generated excitement and curiosity in my classroom. It wouldn't have been possible without your support.”

  • Everybody Poops: The Science of Scat & Animal Identification

    Funded Oct 19, 2012

Thank you all so much for your extremely generous donations to the "Everybody Poops: The Science of Scat and Animal Identification" lesson that I created for my students. Although we are in the process of starting the lesson now, the kids are already really excited to get started with the owl pellet dissections and to practice their tracking skills in the classroom. I have told them so much about the research that I did with tracking animals during a trip that I took to Africa last year that they are excited to try out some of tracking research activities that I did while working with the researchers there. Because most of these students will never have the opportunity to travel and practice these skills out in the field, it is really important to be able to bring those great learning experiences to them in the classroom.

Working with junior high students in a high needs area definitely has its challenges. One of the biggest ones is getting students excited about what they are learning about and enthusiastic about that learning. You all have helped to instill this excitement about learning within my students and words cannot express how thankful that I am to all of you for that.

Thanks again for your donations and your continued support of my students, my classroom, and my lesson ideas!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Hagen

  • Teenage Brain User's Manual

    Funded Dec 19, 2012

I want to express my sincere gratitude for your donations to my Special education classroom. The models and poster illustrate in pictures what the brain looks like, with its various components. Different learners benefit greatly from three dimensional models they can handle.

The Owner's Guide to the Teenage Brain books are enjoyed by my students and well as all myself and my classroom para-professionals. We just finished chapter two which described in a simplified manner how short and long term memory works.

Since many of my students have ADHD they resist doing math homework. I am sure I saw many of them realize that I was not lying to them about how "practice at home makes you remember better the next day!" ; -)”

  • It's A Small World

    Funded Oct 17, 2012

Thank you to all of you once again for the wonderful resources that we will be able to use all this year! The students have been absolutely thrilled to have these resources to learn and experiment! They have been able to use several of the informative texts from a previous project for research and now, they cant' wait to build their own solar system!

This group of students seems particularly interested in science! They have been asking so many questions about everything we have studied. They're hungry to learn more! You have created a room of future scientists! The materials you donated to my class provided my students with a fun, engaging, hands on activities. Thank you all so much for providing these science resources.”

  • Brainiacs in Search of Brains

    Funded Nov 1, 2012

My students and I would like to thank you once again for donating sheep brains for our neuroscience class. We dissected them this week and students were incredibly excited and engaged in the process. I will let them speak for themselves:

"Yesterday was the first time I dissected anything. For my first experience, I feel like I did great with keeping my composure. I thought I would be grossed out before the procedure began, but I ended up being excited about it!" -€“Kyla

"I really enjoy stuff like this because it's just really cool to see something you often wouldn't see and to be able to be so hands on with something like a sheep's brain." -€“Luca

"This activity connected to our classwork perfectly. It helped the class have a better definition of where and what each part of the brain does. We had to locate where the cerebrum, cerebellum, occipital/parietal/temporal/frontal lobes, midbrain, pons and medulla were." -Miriam

"It was fun to literally pinpoint the different lobes in the different cortices, and to separate the hemisphere and see the inside. It really made what we learned real." €“ -Amber

"This experience was really helpful for my knowledge of neuroscience. Since I am a visual learner, the parts of the brain make more sense than ever." -Deisy

"It is one thing to see pictures of a brain, and it's a totally different thing to hold a real brain, and feel its folds and different parts and to know why and what these parts do." -Brittany

As you can see, this was a rare and truly special educational experience for my students. We are so grateful for your role in making excellent learning opportunities like this possible.”

  • Scientists with Special Needs Want to Explore!

    Funded Oct 17, 2012

Thank you for helping my students, staff, and school community; we are so thankful for your support! We could not have achieved our goal of providing high quality and multisensory science instruction to students with multiple disabilities without your help! Once again, we thank you for your very meaningful gift!

On behalf of my students, staff, and school community I would like to take this chance to express our gratitude for your most generous donation to our classroom. I am overwhelmed by your enthusiasm to provide high quality and multisensory science instruction to students with multiple disabilities; through your donation, my students will have a way to access the general education science curriculum. Without your help learning science would not be as informative or exciting for my students! Now, with your help, my students are able to use their senses to access science material. For example, when having a discussion about animals, my students can access and refer to one of the tactile based science kits. They can feel feathers when talking about birds, shells and sand when talking about under water life, and leaves and bark when talking about trees. Other materials that have greatly excited my students include the: "Can Do!" Science Kits (sink or float, magnification, light) as well as, the different materials that allows my students to explore light and color; my students have enjoyed turning down the classroom lights and using a light box with these materials to make new discoveries!

I am very excited to see were these new materials will take us! Thank you again.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Stromberg

  • We Have an Issue Without Our Tissues!!

    Funded Oct 23, 2012

Thank you does not begin to say how much my students appreciate your generous donation. After using the tissue slides for the first time yesterday, I was a proud teacher. My students were able to not only see what different types of human tissue actually look like, but they were able to do it themselves. They adjusted the focus, light and slides on the microscopes by themselves, and seeing them working so independently was an amazing moment as their teacher.

Many of my students are now getting their college acceptance letters. With these letters comes hopes and dreams of dorm rooms, roommates, and majors. Many of these graduating seniors have goals of going into science related professions, and seeing them using these microscopes only helped me realize how successful they will become.

These slides have also given them hope. I try and tell them repeatedly how much there is to do outside of my classroom, and these slides help them see that. Now science is not just some intangible subject, but an actual, possible career. They were excited to use these slides, and I was excited to watch them.

Thank you, once again, for helping my students achieve. Your generosity has placed a renewed importance of science on my students which they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. C.

  • Help Pre-K Learn About The Life Cycle Of A Butterfly

    Funded Oct 24, 2012

Thank you for helping my class get caterpillars and books about the life cycle of a butterfly. The children are now going to be able to watch a caterpillar turn into a butterfly in the classroom. They will document the four stages and after a few weeks let the butterflies free outside. I can't wait to see the joy and excitement on their faces. I will post pictures shortly.

Thank you for taking the time to read and support my proposal. You have truly made a difference in these young children's lives.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Magnotta
