We Can Learn From Lennie!

Funded Dec 14, 2009

I cannot begin to express my gratitude to you for providing my class the gift of the novella "Of Mice and Men." Aside from the fact that the eighth grade hall was abuzz with the happenings of the book, my students truly cared for the characters in the text, and sincerely arrived to class eager to read. For the reason that they genuinely wanted to open the book and read: I thank you.

While reading "Of Mice and Men," my students were exposed to and explored crucial themes within literature and current social norms. Through Lennie and George, these young adults learned the importance and significance of loyalty, trust, and the search for the quintessential American dream. Reading this book allowed my students to dissect the realization and the elusiveness of American dreams, while reasonably honing in on their own.

Aside from exploring key themes and implicitly stated morals, my students also strengthened their context vocabulary while reinforcing their literacy skills. Additionally, with the usage of corresponding text support, students were encouraged to embark upon the book at their own pace and their own reading level. This differentiated text support allowed some students to grasp essential concepts, while others were encouraged to dig deeper and grapple with controversial issues.

I thank you for your donation. My students thank you for exposing them to a great piece of literature and a story which they will never forget. I understand that we are in the midst of economic hardship and, therefore, depending on non-for-profit agencies are crucial and imperative to ensure educational success. Your donation has helped to strengthen the future leaders of America, and on a small note, has sparked a love of reading.

I wish you all the best and a prosperous, joyful 2010.

Warm regards,”

With gratitude,

Ms. Leiter
