  • Math Through Physical Activity Games

    Funded Sep 10, 2013

    These resources al

lowed students to collaborate to create game activities that gave our kinesthetic and tactile learners opportunities to enjoy math beyond staying in seats. Students considered the physical resource items that I purchased then they designed math problems that when answered correctly, afforded students the chance to engage in physical activity that was stimulating and sheer fun!

My students were initially excited to see these engaging games. Students collaborated to create game activities that gave our kinesthetic and tactile learners opportunities to enjoy math beyond staying in seats. Students considered the physical resource items that I purchased then they designed math problems that when answered correctly, afforded students the chance to engage in physical activity that was stimulating and sheer fun!

Next I would like to students integrate technology by creating performance videos to share math strategies through performing arts (e.g. dance, rap, sing). As middle school students my kids are showman and performers. They will connect that to what they are learning to help others learn.”

  • Wonderful Writers

    Funded Sep 11, 2013

The gifts we received from you have truly made a difference for my students. Writing in my class is no longer the same. Writing is an essential skill that will benefit children for the rest of their lives. It helps in all academic areas and builds a strong foundation of communication. My students are so excited to go through the writing process and publish their writing. These gifts have helped encourage expression and creativity. Young children have fascinating stories to tell. We have written and published Non-Fiction books, Narratives, and How-To-Books. It has helped encourage my students that once disliked writing to enjoy it. I have students looking forward to Writers Workshop to work on their piece of writing. The paper and printer you supplied has allowed me to foster a love for writing for my students at a young age. Thank you for touching and changing the lives of a young child.”

  • Youths And Yoga

    Funded Oct 20, 2013

It has been a very long and cold winter in Chicago. Because students are not allowed outside in inclement weather, the use of yoga in the classroom has been a source of enjoyment for my students. They are so eager to try new poses that when I am out of the building due to professional development, the students want to know if the substitute teacher knows how to do yoga. The fact that the students have been so receptive to developing their minds and bodies makes me one delighted 3rd grade teacher.

We engage in the practice of yoga after lunch for indoor recess confines them to the cafeteria. Picking them up after lunch and "recess" usually involves too much negative energy and excessive talking. Since we've been practicing yoga three days a week for the past three months, I have noted a remarkable change in their energy. They are making better decisions during lunch/recess to be able to participate (being sent to the office, makes them miss out on the practice), taking many deep breaths when they become frustrated, and thinking more positively about learning. As a matter of fact, one of my students, during breakfast in the classroom, raised her hand to tell about how frustrated she was with her math homework. She said that the homework assignment that previous evening make her feel irritated, and after realizing she could breathe her way through it, she completed the assignment. I gave her a high five and congratulated her. Other students, in their small groups, started to buzz about how yoga was helping them.

Just recently, I saw a news segment promoting yoga practice in high schools, and I thought, finally people are catching on to this. The practice of yoga has truly improved my students' sense of balance both physically and mentally. It has improved their ability to deal with the stress of standardized testing as well as their stamina for focusing on learning and completing schoolwork. I still have to remind a few to focus on their breathing in trying situations, but it is worth the effort for I know the benefits.

Thanks, again, for your generosity in supporting this accomplishment. As a class, we thank you for helping to improve our minds and bodies.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Patterson

  • Our Town: Chicago's Progression Over Time

    Funded Sep 11, 2013

Thank you so much for your donation of resources to our class. My students have really enjoyed using the literature to learn about our city's history and how things have progressed over the years. My students have become so involved in discussions and debates about how we could persuade others to make better decisions about improving our city today. I appreciate the use of these resources as they have been a great help in my teaching of various topics about our great city. Many great facts and photos of artifacts that were provided in the literature helped to provide meaningful and positive learning about our city. My students have gained great intellect and pride in learning and creating their own stories about this great city.”

  • Incite to Dream

    Funded Aug 22, 2013

I would like to take this time to express my sincere gratitude for your generous donation to my classroom and students. "Incite To Dream," came to fruition because of you.

My children had a seed planted within their hearts and we will continue to tend to it for as long as possible. The novel, "The Alchemist," they expressed how excited they were to learn that everyone has a personal legend. It is up to each individual to realize their passion. "Touching Spirit Bear," taught them that everyone needs to be loved and it does not necessarily have to be familial connections. In "The Last Invisible Boy," my students said they learned that as we mature we lose some of ourselves and gain more through knowledge and experience.

We read each novel as a class. Afterwards, we had some of the most exciting discussions you could expect from 10 year olds. Essays were written after each novel but not in the traditional book report form.

Growth in literature was evident as most of my students made gains on the standardized test we use entitled NWEA. The range of gain was between 10 and 25 points; which is excellent for midyear.

At this particular time I don't know how to download pictures but they will be sent no later than we I learn how to. We have essays that will be forwarded to you Tuesday, January 21, 2014.

Words can not express the way I feel. Again, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

  • The Ancient Greeks, Were Some Cool Geeks!

    Funded Sep 11, 2013

The students loved reading Greek myths and discussing and discovering that ancient man struggled with some of the same problems we do today. When we performed the 4 myths students worked together as groups taking ownership in their performances. Students were surprisingly professional, dramatic and discovered how easy and how much fun it is to perform in front of an audience! They want to perform more plays now for the whole school not just their parents. We also, studied the origin of the Olympics in Olympia, Greece. Next, students compared the past olympics to present day 2014 Winter Olympics. Students are glad "we have girls participating" and "more fun events like snowboarding." Sorry to have lost the final performance photos, but I included photos of rehearsals and their "Greeks Were No Geeks" Response Journals.”

  • Physically Fit First Graders

    Funded Aug 20, 2013

I would like to give my sincere thanks to you for your thoughtful donation. The equipment we received from the "Physically Fit First Graders" project has truly changed the lives and learning of my students. Your donation has helped support increased learning, focus and simply a love for school. My students look forward to having that time to enjoy the equipment, play with classmates and exercise their minds and bodies. I have noticed a change in my students from the time we started using the equipment. They come back to class more relaxed, focused, happy, and ready to learn. I find that they are able to really use their higher order thinking skills during the lessons. It has helped create a great sense of cooperation among the students. They have so much more energy to think and tackle any task. One student mentioned she was growing muscles in not only her legs and arms but also, her brain too from using the equipment each day. How touching is that? Words cannot express how you have changed my students and my teaching. I am truly touched by your generosity and willingness to help a 1st grade teacher and her students. You have supported me in building a foundation of learning and the importance of healthy eating and exercise at a young age. My students will forever have these memories. Thank you so much.”

  • HYDROPONICS: "Can Plants Grow Without Soil?"

    Funded Sep 10, 2013

Thank you for giving my students the opportunity to be engaged with nature and science. My student created their own layouts for their sensory domes. They planted seeds that produced plants, that would utilize all 5 of their senses (smell, taste, touch, hearing, sight). This served as a way to introduce the concept of our 5 senses. My students learned that with plants...it begins with a seed. We planted many different types of seeds. My students were amazed when their plants grew! They discovered on their own many things, because of your generosity. My students loved to check to see whose plant grew the most. We plan to donate our plants to the school's garden in the spring. It was messy and great fun to see them put more dirt on the floor than in their containers. The last experiment my students did was to answer the questions , "Can plants grow without soil", (hydroponics). My students discovered that plants can grow without soil. Thanks again!”

  • History of the World

    Funded Sep 10, 2013

I have received and used the items requested in my grant. The hands-on activity was very well received by students who were able to identify the landforms with labels. The books are being used as reference materials for research projects is social studies.

I was remise in photographing the finished product yet I am happy to say it was viewed by my class and others. The groups that completed the landform project were able to explain the finished product as well as the steps taken to complete. My students are reading and discussing events that are keystones to the history of our nation.

Thank you so much for materials that will be put to use regularly throughout the school year. My students are using the materials independently to gain a better understanding of our community, state and nation. And I am able to reinforce concepts using the wide variety of resource received.”

  • Recess Blues No More! Fitness Fun for Kids with Autism

    Funded Sep 10, 2013

Thank you so so much for this much needed recess equipment!!! The change in my 13 students' behavior during recess is remarkable!

Before getting the materials, my students would often stand off to the side during recess, or sit on the ground, staring. Now, my students are PLAYING! And not only are they playing with other, but they are getting exercise -- while having fun!

What is even more fantastic is that they are playing with kids from other classrooms, so this is helping my students socialize with general education students!

They are so grateful for your help, and so am I!

    Thanks a million!!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Frazin
